The Weather Research and Forecasting ( WRF ) Model ( / ˈ w ɔːr f / ) is a numerical weather prediction (NWP) system designed to serve both atmospheric research and operational forecasting needs. NWP refers to the simulation and prediction of the atmosphere with a computer model, and WRF is a set of software for this. WRF features two dynamical (computational) cores (or solvers ), a data assimilation system, and a software architecture allowing for parallel computation and system extensibility. The model serves a wide range of meteorological applications across scales ranging from meters to thousands of kilometers.

26-418: A flexible and robust platform, while offering advances in physics, numerics, and data assimilation contributed by the many research community developers. WRF is currently in operational use at NCEP and other forecasting centers internationally. WRF has grown to have a large worldwide community of users (over 30,000 registered users in over 150 countries), and workshops and tutorials are held each year at NCAR. WRF
39-520: A high-resolution version of the Princeton Ocean Model for the Atlantic Basin. The ocean initialization system uses observed altimeter observations to provide a more realistic Loop Current and Gulf Stream conditions. Mary Glackin, acting director of NOAA's National Weather Service , says that "It is vital that we understand all the factors of hurricane forecasting throughout the life of

Over the next several years, this model promises to improve forecasts for tropical cyclone intensity, wave and storm surge , and hurricane-related inland flooding." She also says that the HWRF "will be one of the most dynamic tools available" for forecasters. Development of the HWRF model began in 2002. In 2007, the HWRF model became operational. While
65-405: Is a nested grid system with an outermost domain and a nested grid with resolutions of 27 and 9 km respectively and 42 vertical levels. The HWRF vortex initialization uses the 6 hour forecast as the first guess, then uses regional GSI 3DAR data assimilation to produce the initial hurricane vortex that matches the intensity and structure parameters provided operationally by NHC. The HWRF is coupled to
78-510: Is a specialized version of the weather research and forecasting model and is used to forecast the track and intensity of tropical cyclones . The model was developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory , the University of Rhode Island , and Florida State University . It became operational in 2007. The HWRF computer model

The WRF-NMM solver variant was based on the Eta model, and later nonhydrostatic mesoscale model, developed at NCEP. The WRF-NMM (NMM) is supported to the community by the Developmental Testbed Center (DTC). The WRF serves as the basis for the RAP and HRRR models : high-resolution operational forecast models run regularly at NCEP. The WRF also serves as
117-519: Is the operational backbone for hurricane track and intensity forecasts by the National Hurricane Center (NHC). The model will use data from satellite observations, buoys , and reconnaissance aircraft, making it able to access more meteorological data than any other hurricane model before it. The model will eventually run at an even higher resolution which will allow smaller scale features to become more discernible. — The model
130-461: Is used extensively for research and real-time forecasting throughout the world. It has been shown to perform well in simulating Atmospheric convection , but to be prone to producing squall lines too easily. WRF offers two dynamical solvers for its computation of the atmospheric governing equations, and the variants of the model are known as WRF-ARW (Advanced Research WRF) and WRF-NMM (nonhydrostatic mesoscale model). The Advanced Research WRF (ARW)

The bulk of the work on the model has been performed or supported by NCAR, NOAA, and AFWA. WRF allows researchers to produce simulations reflecting either real data (observations, analyses) or idealized atmospheric conditions. WRF provides operational forecasting
