92-687: The Temeke Municipal Council is organized into 23 wards and two divisions on an administrative level. The wards are: One of the five municipalities in the City of Dar es Salaam, Temeke Municipal Council was founded on November 10, 1999, in accordance with Sections 8 and 9 of the Local Government (Urban Authorities) Act, 1982 No. 8. Temeke Municipal has a total area of 240 square kilometers, including 5 kilometers of coastline . Due to its location in Tanzania's tropical coastline region, Temeke Municipal Council

184-527: A navy and some form of coast guard . Coasts, especially those with beaches and warm water, attract tourists often leading to the development of seaside resort communities. In many island nations such as those of the Mediterranean , South Pacific Ocean and Caribbean , tourism is central to the economy . Coasts offer recreational activities such as swimming, fishing, surfing, boating, and sunbathing . Growth management and coastal management can be

276-478: A challenge for coastal local authorities who often struggle to provide the infrastructure required by new residents, and poor management practices of construction often leave these communities and infrastructure vulnerable to processes like coastal erosion and sea level rise . In many of these communities, management practices such as beach nourishment or when the coastal infrastructure is no longer financially sustainable, managed retreat to remove communities from

368-622: A combination of many. One of the major challenges the firm faced was revenue collection. With thousands of customers defaulting on their electricity payments, Tanesco planned to establish a convenient prepaid metering system for low demand users. Tanesco undertook a prepayment metering project between 1993 and 1997 though world bank funding. The new program was referred to as "Lipa Umeme Kadiri Utumiavyo"(LUKU) meaning "Pay for electricity as you need it" in English. The system allows users to recharge their units from multiple vendors in their communities plus

460-655: A much higher capacity for carbon sequestration than many terrestrial ecosystems , and as such can play a critical role in the near-future to help mitigate climate change effects by uptake of atmospheric anthropogenic carbon dioxide . However, the economic importance of coasts makes many of these communities vulnerable to climate change , which causes increases in extreme weather and sea level rise, as well as related issues like coastal erosion , saltwater intrusion , and coastal flooding . Other coastal issues, such as marine pollution , marine debris , coastal development, and marine ecosystem destruction, further complicate

552-625: A proper name to the coast of the Ligurian Sea , in the form riviera ligure , then shortened to riviera . Historically, the Ligurian Riviera extended from Capo Corvo (Punta Bianca) south of Genoa , north and west into what is now French territory past Monaco and sometimes as far as Marseilles . Today, this coast is divided into the Italian Riviera and the French Riviera , although

644-435: A provider of sediment for coastlines of tropical islands. Like the ocean which shapes them, coasts are a dynamic environment with constant change. The Earth 's natural processes, particularly sea level rises , waves and various weather phenomena, have resulted in the erosion , accretion and reshaping of coasts as well as flooding and creation of continental shelves and drowned river valleys ( rias ). More and more of

736-500: A result of low water levels in the hydroelectric dams. The electricity is available in all 23 of the Municipal's wards. The government, a small number of private businesses, and certain religious institutions all use solar energy. Except for a small number of them, the Municipal has a sizable number of local banks functioning in Tanzania. The financial institutions in Tanzania have a total of 702 branches in their overall branch network, per

828-456: A shoreline configuration. Swash is the shoreward flow after the break, backwash is the water flow back down the beach. The relative strength of flow in the swash and backwash determines what size grains are deposited or eroded. This is dependent on how the wave breaks and the slope of the shore. Depending on the form of the breaking wave, its energy can carry granular material up the beach and deposit it, or erode it by carrying more material down

920-425: A slightly different way in discussions of legal and economic boundaries (see territorial waters and international waters ) or when considering the geography of coastal landforms or the ecological systems operating through the continental shelf ( marine coastal ecosystems ). The research on coastal waters often divides into these separate areas too. The dynamic fluid nature of the ocean means that all components of

1012-600: A total population of 1,205,949 as of the 2012 National Population and Housing Census, of which 587,857 were men and 618,092 were women. There were also a total of 307,760 homes, with an average size of four people per household. The annual average population growth rate was 4.6%. Temeke was expected to have 368,416 households and 1,443,629 residents as of 2016. Men make up 703,718 of them, and women make up 739,912. The Municipal contains 140 pre-primary schools and 134 primary schools, of which 2 schools and 14 units provide special education for students with various disabilities. 51 of

1104-953: A variety of economic infrastructures, including highways, the Tanzania Railway Cooperation (TRC), Tanzania Zambia Railway (TAZARA), and maritime transportation. Temeke Municipal is connected to Dar es Salaam's city center as well as the central areas of Morogoro, Dodoma, Singida, Tabora, Mwanza, and Kigoma by the TRC infrastructure's railway line. The nation is linked to the entire East Africa Community by Mwanza and Kigoma. Currently, Temeke Municipal has 2,353 enterprises invested. 80 of these are heavy manufacturing sectors with more than 100 employees. 62 are medium-sized businesses, whereas 2,131 are small-sized businesses. The Municipal now employs 67 commercial millers . Private persons own each one of them in large, medium, and small scale units. Since so many commodities from southern Tanzania are transported to

1196-457: A wide range of biodiversity . On land, they harbor important ecosystems such as freshwater or estuarine wetlands , which are important for bird populations and other terrestrial animals . In wave-protected areas, they harbor salt marshes , mangroves or seagrasses , all of which can provide nursery habitat for fin fish , shellfish , and other aquatic animals . Rocky shores are usually found along exposed coasts and provide habitat for

1288-529: A wide range of sessile animals (e.g. mussels , starfish , barnacles ) and various kinds of seaweeds . In physical oceanography , a shore is the wider fringe that is geologically modified by the action of the body of water past and present, while the beach is at the edge of the shore, representing the intertidal zone where there is one. Along tropical coasts with clear, nutrient-poor water, coral reefs can often be found between depths of 1–50 m (3.3–164.0 ft). According to an atlas prepared by

1380-646: A workforce of 7,300 persons. Its main offices are located in Ubungo west of Dar es Salaam central business district and it operates regional offices throughout Tanzania . Electricity was first introduced in Tanzania ( Tanganyika ) in 1908 by the German colonial authorities in Dar-es-salaam . After the British mandate was established a Government electricity department was formed and took over energy generation and transmission in

1472-524: A zero grazing approach. Systems that are intense and semi-intensive are used for commercial poultry raising. In the Municipality, 742 tons of broiler meat and 928,173 trays of eggs are typically produced. There are now 30 businesses that buy, sell, process, manufacture furniture, or deal in hides or skins. The majority of animals is transferred to Pugu at Ilala for slaughter before being sold alive. A very tiny number of animals have been killed and eaten within

1564-547: Is 964.6 tons per day, or 65% of the waste produced daily from locations within Temeke Municipal Council. The total amount of waste produced that is not collected and delivered to the disposal site is therefore 529.4 tons per day, or 35% of the total amount of waste produced each day (including recyclable wastes). Only five (5) of Temeke Municipal Council's 23 wards—Chang'ombe, Mtoni, Kurasini, Tandika, and Temeke—have private contractors that collect and transport rubbish to

1656-463: Is a Tanzanian parastatal organisation established in 1964. It is wholly owned by the government of Tanzania . The Ministry of Energy and Minerals regulates the operations of TANESCO . Its business include: electricity generation , electricity transmission , electricity distribution and sale of electricity to the Tanzanian mainland and bulk power supply to the island of Zanzibar . The company has

1748-541: Is a coastline that has experienced a fall in sea level, because of either a global sea-level change, or local uplift. Emergent coastlines are identifiable by the coastal landforms , which are above the high tide mark, such as raised beaches . In contrast, a submergent coastline is one where the sea level has risen, due to a global sea-level change, local subsidence , or isostatic rebound . Submergent coastlines are identifiable by their submerged, or "drowned" landforms, such as rias (drowned valleys) and fjords According to

1840-528: Is connected to marine pollution which can occur from a number of sources: Marine debris (garbage and industrial debris); the transportation of petroleum in tankers , increasing the probability of large oil spills ; small oil spills created by large and small vessels, which flush bilge water into the ocean. Marine pollution occurs when substances used or spread by humans, such as industrial , agricultural and residential waste , particles , noise , excess carbon dioxide or invasive organisms enter

1932-415: Is extremely important to geologists. These provide vital clues for reconstructing the geography of ancient continents ( paleogeography ). The locations of these beds show the extent of ancient seas at particular points in geological time, and provide clues to the magnitudes of tides in the distant past. Sediments deposited in the shoreface are preserved as lenses of sandstone in which the upper part of

2024-421: Is impacted by two key climatic factors: temperature and rainfall. Bimodal conventional rains accompany the bimodal type of rainfall pattern. Between December and February, the Municipality experiences nearly constant monsoon rainfall. While there were prolonged periods of severe rain from March to June. Every year, there is between 800 and 1200 mm of rainfall. Like rainfall, temperature is likewise impacted by

2116-622: Is located in Temeke District in the Kurasini, Kijichi, and Mbagala Mtoni Ward. The Mwalimu J.K.Nyerere Trade Fair Grounds hosts the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), popularly known as Saba Saba Day , every year on the seventh of July. The Temeke Municipality is where the yearly big promotional event hosted by the Board of External Trade is situated along Kilwa Road. To lead Tanzania's export efforts,

2208-410: Is mainly extension of grid connected and mini-grid connected distribution network to the rural areas. Small power producers are allowed to sell their power directly to the consumer and sell the excess to Tanesco. However, the tariffs of sale have been decided by Tanesco to maintain public interest. Below is a table showing the possible tariff cases an SPP can engage in; an SPP can engage in one case or

2300-408: Is more important. Macrotidal coasts lack barrier islands and lagoons , and are characterized by funnel-shaped estuaries containing sand ridges aligned with tidal currents. Wave action is much more important for determining bedforms of sediments deposited along mesotidal and microtidal coasts than in macrotidal coasts. Waves erode coastline as they break on shore releasing their energy; the larger

2392-404: Is mostly caused by the slopes of river valleys, where there is no vegetation to hold the soil in place, and is exacerbated by human activity like the extraction of building materials. Neogene clay-bound sands to hard sandstones make up Temeke Municipal's outcropping rocks and underlying (semi-)consolidated formations. In the central and southern regions of Municipal, terrace sands and sandstones of

2484-423: Is moved along the coastline by the waves. This forms an abrasion or cliffed coast . Sediment deposited by rivers is the dominant influence on the amount of sediment located in the case of coastlines that have estuaries. Today, riverine deposition at the coast is often blocked by dams and other human regulatory devices, which remove the sediment from the stream by causing it to be deposited inland. Coral reefs are

2576-619: Is organised under the following business units: Generation, Transmission, Distribution and Customer Services, Investment, Finance, Information, Communication and Technology, Human Resources and the Legal Counsel. The Tanzania Electric Supply company ltd. is wholly owned by the Government of Tanzania. It is a public corporation governed by the Public Corporations Act, revised edition 2002. There has been much debate to either privatise

2668-407: Is sufficient supply. In Temeke Municipal, more than 2,360m3 of timber are handled each year. The Municipal actually needs about 6,000m3 of wood every year. Over 1,000 casual workers are employed in the sector, and some businesspeople are involved in the sale of lumber in the municipal market. The largest officially designated protected area is a mangrove forest in the municipal spans 380 hectars and

2760-412: Is the counterintuitive observation that the coastline of a landmass does not have a well-defined length. This results from the fractal curve –like properties of coastlines; i.e., the fact that a coastline typically has a fractal dimension . Although the "paradox of length" was previously noted by Hugo Steinhaus , the first systematic study of this phenomenon was by Lewis Fry Richardson , and it

2852-406: Is the overview of Tanesco's operations As of March 2015 : Generation Capacity in the interconnected grid system: Transmission network: Distribution network: Tanesco has to import a small amount of its energy from Uganda and Zambia to supply the needs of the bordering regions that are not connected to the national grid. Currently Tanzania only exports electricity to Kenya near

2944-456: The Aegean Sea . The following articles describe some coastal landforms: "Coastal waters" (or "coastal seas") is a rather general term used differently in different contexts, ranging geographically from the waters within a few kilometers of the coast, through to the entire continental shelf which may stretch for more than a hundred kilometers from land. Thus the term coastal waters is used in

3036-689: The Horo Horo region, and the Isinya–Singida High Voltage Power Line is under construction. With the recent expansion of the Gas Sector in Tanzania the company has major plans to increase exports to neighbouring countries. In 2009 the Government through Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) approved Small Power Project framework. Since the Government didn't have Renewable energy policy in place nor did they have any major plans for energy generation through renewable fuels,

3128-452: The US EPA considers this region to extend much further offshore. "Coastal waters" has specific meanings in the context of commercial coastal shipping , and somewhat different meanings in the context of naval littoral warfare . Oceanographers and marine biologists have yet other takes. Coastal waters have a wide range of marine habitats from enclosed estuaries to the open waters of

3220-610: The United Nations , about 44% of the human population lives within 150 km (93 mi) of the sea as of 2013 . Due to its importance in society and its high population concentrations, the coast is important for major parts of the global food and economic system, and they provide many ecosystem services to humankind. For example, important human activities happen in port cities. Coastal fisheries (commercial, recreational, and subsistence) and aquaculture are major economic activities and create jobs, livelihoods, and protein for

3312-670: The Western Interior Seaway , a shallow sea that flooded central North America during the late Cretaceous Period (about 100 to 66 million years ago). These are beautifully exposed along the Book Cliffs of Utah and Colorado . The following articles describe the various geologic processes that affect a coastal zone: Larger animals that live in coastal areas include puffins , sea turtles and rockhopper penguins , among many others. Sea snails and various kinds of barnacles live on rocky coasts and scavenge on food deposited by

3404-475: The land next to the sea or the line that forms the boundary between the land and the ocean or a lake . Coasts are influenced by the topography of the surrounding landscape, as well as by water induced erosion , such as waves . The geological composition of rock and soil dictates the type of shore that is created. Earth contains roughly 620,000 km (390,000 mi) of coastline. Coasts are important zones in natural ecosystems , often home to

3496-469: The ocean and cause harmful effects there. The majority of this waste (80%) comes from land-based activity, although marine transportation significantly contributes as well. It is a combination of chemicals and trash, most of which comes from land sources and is washed or blown into the ocean. This pollution results in damage to the environment, to the health of all organisms, and to economic structures worldwide. Since most inputs come from land, either via

3588-596: The ocean . Floating oceanic debris tends to accumulate at the center of gyres and on coastlines, frequently washing aground, when it is known as beach litter or tidewrack. Deliberate disposal of wastes at sea is called ocean dumping . Naturally occurring debris, such as driftwood and drift seeds , are also present. With the increasing use of plastic , human influence has become an issue as many types of (petrochemical) plastics do not biodegrade quickly, as would natural or organic materials. The largest single type of plastic pollution (~10%) and majority of large plastic in

3680-444: The rivers , sewage or the atmosphere, it means that continental shelves are more vulnerable to pollution. Air pollution is also a contributing factor by carrying off iron, carbonic acid, nitrogen , silicon, sulfur, pesticides or dust particles into the ocean. The pollution often comes from nonpoint sources such as agricultural runoff , wind-blown debris , and dust. These nonpoint sources are largely due to runoff that enters

3772-560: The 134 schools are owned by the private sector, and the remaining 81 are government-run pre-primary schools. There are a total of 134 schools in total. There are 15 COBET (MEMKWA) Centers, 3 vocational centers, 2 government centers, and 1 private center, nevertheless. There are 170,027 pupils enrolled in public and private pre-primary and primary schools overall. The Municipal has 63 secondary schools in total. wherein there are 37 private secondary schools and 26 public ones. As shown in figure 8 below, there are presently 52,161 pupils enrolled in

3864-515: The 200 hectares of irrigation farming practiced by small holders in Temeke Municipality. One of the activities carried out by Temeke Municipal Council is livestock keeping. There are 6,095 households that maintain animals in total. However, the space available for cattle husbandry is shrinking as a result of human settlement increase. On a modest scale, dairy cows, goats, and chickens are raised intensively. The Municipal keeps dairy cattle using

3956-624: The Board of External Trade, a government entity, was founded by Act No. 5 of 1978. One year after Tanzania declared its independence on December 9, 1961, the Trade Fair Grounds, also known as the Mwl. J. K. Nyerere Trade Fair Grounds, were opened for business. The National Agricultural and Trade Fair (NATF) was held at the Grounds, which at the time fell under the Ministry of Trade and Cooperative Unions. Over

4048-520: The Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, Zambia, Malawi, and Kenya—could also be useful for the transportation of bulk goods. Petroleum, hydropower, and 1% of Municipal households utilize kerosene as a lighting source for homes and small businesses are the Municipal's main sources of commercial energy. Given that the Municipal relies on the National Grid for its energy source, power outages are somewhat frequent as

4140-736: The French use the term "Riviera" to refer to the Italian Riviera and call the French portion the "Côte d'Azur". As a result of the fame of the Ligurian rivieras, the term came into English to refer to any shoreline, especially one that is sunny, topographically diverse and popular with tourists. Such places using the term include the Australian Riviera in Queensland and the Turkish Riviera along

4232-555: The Municipal (in both private and public schools), with 25,347 boys and 26,814 girls. There are currently 136 medical facilities in existence, of which 3 are hospitals, 16 are health centers, and 102 are dispensaries. The largest one being the Temeke Regional Referral Hospital located in Temeke ward. Coastline A coast  – also called the coastline , shoreline , or seashore  – is

4324-461: The Municipality in various locations. The Mtoni water treatment plant and drill holes jointly produce roughly 6.5 million gallons each day in the metropolitan regions. Boreholes in rural regions and streams in certain places yield a total of roughly 0.7 million gallons daily. The Temeke Municipal Council is predicted to produce 1494 tons of garbage each day on average. The capacity of municipal vehicles working with private companies to collect rubbish

4416-402: The Municipality. Fishing, commerce, and small-scale farming are very popular in the Temeke region. It is also regarded as a manufacturing hub because it is home to the majority of Dar es Salaam's industry . Here you can also find the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair Grounds and Tanzania's biggest port, Dar es Salaam Port, which serves six other nearby nations. The Municipal is connected to

4508-562: The Quaternary System are more prevalent. The Municipality's primary water sources come from both surface sources such as the Mtoni plant and lower Ruvu (through DAWASCO pipes) and ground water sources. The current population (2018) is predicted to be 1,574,167, according to the 2002 National Population and Housing Census. The anticipated daily total water demand is 125,933m3, or 80 liters per person. Only 85.634 cubic meters per day, or 68.1% of

4600-534: The United Nations has declared 2021–2030 the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration , but restoration of coastal ecosystems has received insufficient attention. Since coasts are constantly changing, a coastline's exact perimeter cannot be determined; this measurement challenge is called the coastline paradox . The term coastal zone is used to refer to a region where interactions of sea and land processes occur. Both

4692-571: The average sea level rose by 15–25 cm (6–10 in), with an increase of 2.3 mm (0.091 in) per year since the 1970s. This was faster than the sea level had ever risen over at least the past 3,000 years. The rate accelerated to 4.62 mm (0.182 in)/yr for the decade 2013–2022. Climate change due to human activities is the main cause. Between 1993 and 2018, melting ice sheets and glaciers accounted for 44% of sea level rise , with another 42% resulting from thermal expansion of water . International attention to address

4784-417: The average wind wave and swell conditions are relatively mild. Low energy coasts typically change slowly, and tend to be depositional environments. High energy coasts are exposed to the direct impact of waves and storms, and are generally erosional environments. High energy storm events can make large changes to a coastline, and can move significant amounts of sediment over a short period, sometimes changing

4876-484: The city for sale, the rise in flour milling businesses will encourage farmers and businesspeople to raise the price of their goods. Only 8 fruit canning and juice concentrate manufacturing industries are located in the Municipal. Serengeti Breweries Limited (SBL) is the sole brewery that the Municipal currently has, despite the fact that the transportation industry has plenty of investment potential and sound physical infrastructure. With its own brands accounting for 15% of

4968-461: The coast of Wales and other countries. Coastal fish , also called inshore fish or neritic fish, inhabit the sea between the shoreline and the edge of the continental shelf . Since the continental shelf is usually less than 200 metres (660 ft) deep, it follows that pelagic coastal fish are generally epipelagic fish , inhabiting the sunlit epipelagic zone . Coastal fish can be contrasted with oceanic fish or offshore fish , which inhabit

5060-812: The coast. Estuarine and marine coastal ecosystems are both marine ecosystems . Together, these ecosystems perform the four categories of ecosystem services in a variety of ways: The provisioning services include forest products, marine products, fresh water , raw materials, biochemical and genetic resources. Regulating services include carbon sequestration (contributing to climate change mitigation ) as well as waste treatment and disease regulation and buffer zones. Supporting services of coastal ecosystems include nutrient cycling , biologically mediated habitats and primary production . Cultural services of coastal ecosystems include inspirational aspects, recreation and tourism , science and education. According to one principle of classification, an emergent coastline

5152-587: The colony. In 1931 electricity was handed to two private companies, Tanganyika Electric Supply Company Ltd. (Tanesco) and Dar es Salaam and District Electric Supply Company Ltd (Danesco). Commercial operations for Tanesco began in 1933 with the first diesel generator in the Tanga Region . The first dam was completed in 1936 on the Pangani River . By 1959 the total capacity was 17.5MW and the company had 400 km of supply lines. On 12 February 1948 Tanesco secured

5244-725: The company or list the company on the Dar-es-salaam Stock Exchange . The government however encourages the public sector to enter the market and compete with Tanesco, however, the government is adamant to maintain its public status to help keep the cost of electricity always low for the majority of the population. The key trends for TANESCO's consolidated Group over recent years are shown below (as at year ending 30 June): Grid & Off-Grid Installed Capacity – 2012 by Fuel Type TANESCO's core business are: to generate, transmit, distribute and supply electricity in Tanzanian mainland and sell bulk power to Zanzibar . The following

5336-567: The continental shelf. Similarly, the term littoral zone has no single definition. It is the part of a sea , lake , or river that is close to the shore . In coastal environments, the littoral zone extends from the high water mark , which is rarely inundated, to shoreline areas that are permanently submerged . Coastal waters can be threatened by coastal eutrophication and harmful algal blooms . The identification of bodies of rock formed from sediments deposited in shoreline and nearshore environments (shoreline and nearshore facies )

5428-551: The contract to sell surplus power from the hydro dam to Mombasa , Kenya. At independence (1961) the government acquired some shares from both of the utilities. However, with Tanzania's economic policy shifting towards Ujamaa , by 1975 the government acquired all the shares and merged the two utilities to form a state own utility called the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Ltd. From 1975 the firm responsible for generating, transmitting and distributing power on

5520-555: The deep seas beyond the continental shelves. Many coastal areas are famous for their kelp beds. Kelp is a fast-growing seaweed that can grow up to half a meter a day in ideal conditions. Mangroves , seagrasses , macroalgal beds, and salt marsh are important coastal vegetation types in tropical and temperate environments respectively. Restinga is another type of coastal vegetation. Coasts also face many human-induced environmental impacts and coastal development hazards . The most important ones are: The pollution of coastlines

5612-413: The district have invested in the processing of timber , The municipal has the largest timber processing facilities in the country. They are divided into four categories: coffin making (2), sawmilling (68), and wood carving (1). There are, nevertheless, 238 businesses that produce doors, windows, and frames. The timbers (raw materials) are acquired from locations other than Temeke and Dar es Salaam, but there

5704-491: The government encouraged Renewable energy projects (mini hydro, biomass, solar and wind) with capacity range between 0.1 MW to 10 MW to be developed. Since introduction of SPPs only mini hydro and biomass power projects are in operation; the high cost of setup, fluctuating foreign exchange prices and low tariffs have discouraged investment. The SPP framework also ties in with The Rural Energy Agency (REA) and they are responsible for financing of rural electrification projects. This

5796-777: The human uses of the coast and threaten coastal ecosystems. The interactive effects of climate change, habitat destruction , overfishing , and water pollution (especially eutrophication ) have led to the demise of coastal ecosystem around the globe. This has resulted in population collapse of fisheries stocks, loss of biodiversity , increased invasion of alien species , and loss of healthy habitats. International attention to these issues has been captured in Sustainable Development Goal 14 "Life Below Water", which sets goals for international policy focused on preserving marine coastal ecosystems and supporting more sustainable economic practices for coastal communities. Likewise,

5888-500: The landfill in Pugu Kinyamwezi on a regular basis. Temeke Municipal Council maintains a network of roads totaling 628 km, of which 98.41 km are asphalt roads, 140.48 km are gravel roads, and 389.11 km are earth roads. Within the overall network of 628 km, 59 km (all paved) are under the control of TANROAD, while 575.7 km (paved-59 km, gravel-136.5 km, and earthroad-379.7 km) are under

5980-552: The mainland. Furthermore, Tanesco is also responsible in selling bulk electricity to Zanzibar based ZECO Electric Company. The government liberalised private sector investment in electricity generation in 1992. In 2002 as part of the Companies Act, 2002 of Tanzania, Tanesco was incorporated as a limited liability company; however all its shares were still held by the government. Due to the high dependence on Hydroelectric dams and poor hydrology between 2005 and 2008, Tanesco lead to

6072-410: The majority of coastal human populations. Other coastal spaces like beaches and seaside resorts generate large revenues through tourism . Marine coastal ecosystems can also provide protection against sea level rise and tsunamis . In many countries, mangroves are the primary source of wood for fuel (e.g. charcoal ) and building material. Coastal ecosystems like mangroves and seagrasses have

6164-669: The margins of the continental shelves , make up about 7 percent of the Earth's oceans, but at least 85% of commercially harvested fish depend on coastal environments during at least part of their life cycle. As of October 2010, about 2.86% of exclusive economic zones were part of marine protected areas . The definition of coasts varies. Marine scientists think of the "wet" (aquatic or intertidal ) vegetated habitats as being coastal ecosystems (including seagrass, salt marsh etc.) whilst some terrestrial scientists might only think of coastal ecosystems as purely terrestrial plants that live close to

6256-483: The market by volume and when combined with the portfolio of EABL, Serengeti Breweries Limited-SBL, Tanzania's second-largest beer company, accounts for roughly 28% of the country's branded beer market. The business was founded in 1988 under the name Associated Breweries Limited, then in 2002 it changed its name to Serengeti Breweries Limited. The SBL's main office is located in Temeke Municipal. Over 490 businesses in

6348-587: The microplastics go through the water filtration system and into the ocean, but because of their small size they are likely to escape capture by the preliminary treatment screens on wastewater plants. These beads are harmful to the organisms in the ocean, especially filter feeders, because they can easily ingest the plastic and become sick. The microplastics are such a concern because it is difficult to clean them up due to their size, so humans can try to avoid using these harmful plastics by purchasing products that use environmentally safe exfoliates. Between 1901 and 2018,

6440-507: The more resistant rocks erode more slowly, remaining as headlands or outcroppings . Parts of a coastline can be categorised as high energy coast or low energy coast. The distinguishing characteristics of a high energy coast are that the average wave energy is relatively high so that erosion of small grained material tends to exceed deposition, and consequently landforms like cliffs, headlands and wave-cut terraces develop. Low energy coasts are generally sheltered from waves, or in regions where

6532-625: The most recent BOT banking report. In Temeke Municipal, paddy , cassava , sweet potatoes , maize , pigeon peas , cowpeas , vegetables , and fruits are the primary food crops grown. At Rufu in the Chamazi ward, the irrigation plan for the Major Agricultural Program was created. More than 325 hectares of potential irrigation land are ideal for large-scale crop cultivation. A group of 60 small-holder farmers have developed 75 of these hectares for minor irrigation. Extension officers oversee

6624-441: The ocean through rivers, but wind-blown debris and dust can also play a role, as these pollutants can settle into waterways and oceans. Pathways of pollution include direct discharge, land runoff, ship pollution , bilge pollution , atmospheric pollution and, potentially, deep sea mining . Marine debris , also known as marine litter, is human-created solid material that has deliberately or accidentally been released in seas or

6716-486: The ocean. The entire year is marked by high temperatures, which range from 35 °C in January to March to 25 °C from June to August. Temeke Municipal's soil is frequently clayey and partially sandy, making it relatively unproductive for agricultural usage. Alluvial soils—primarily Eutric Fluvisols and Eutric Gleysols—predominate in the river valleys, which are recent floodplains and are prone to floods. Urban soil erosion

6808-485: The oceans is discarded and lost nets from the fishing industry. Waterborne plastic poses a serious threat to fish , seabirds , marine reptiles , and marine mammals , as well as to boats and coasts. A growing concern regarding plastic pollution in the marine ecosystem is the use of microplastics. Microplastics are beads of plastic less than 5 millimeters wide, and they are commonly found in hand soaps, face cleansers, and other exfoliators. When these products are used,

6900-527: The procurement of their first Emergency Power Project (EPP). The first EPP was the expansion of the Ubungo Power Station with Songas. From 2011 to 2013 TANESCO experienced a shortage of power generation due to poor hydrology and again procurement of costly EPPs was then undertaken. By the end of 2016, TANESCO sought an increase by 8.53 percent of the energy tariff, due to its difficult financial situation. In 2017, The president John Magufuli , dismissed

6992-460: The raise firing the director manager of TANESCO Felchesmi Mramba. Tanesco's management operations is conducted at their headquarters Umeme Park and is located in Ubungo , Dar es salaam . The Management of the company is under the managing director. Currently the managing director is Eng. Boniface Gissima Nyamo-Hanga appointed by the president Samia Suluhu Hassan in September 2023. The company

7084-416: The sandstone is coarser than the lower part (a coarsening upwards sequence ). Geologists refer to these are parasequences . Each records an episode of retreat of the ocean from the shoreline over a period of 10,000 to 1,000,000 years. These often show laminations reflecting various kinds of tidal cycles. Some of the best-studied shoreline deposits in the world are found along the former western shore of

7176-579: The sea. Some coastal animals are used to humans in developed areas, such as dolphins and seagulls who eat food thrown for them by tourists. Since the coastal areas are all part of the littoral zone , there is a profusion of marine life found just off-coast, including sessile animals such as corals , sponges, starfish, mussels, seaweeds, fishes, and sea anemones . There are many kinds of seabirds on various coasts. These include pelicans and cormorants , who join up with terns and oystercatchers to forage for fish and shellfish. There are sea lions on

7268-401: The seashore (see also estuaries and coastal ecosystems ). While there is general agreement in the scientific community regarding the definition of coast, in the political sphere, the delineation of the extents of a coast differ according to jurisdiction . Government authorities in various countries may define coast differently for economic and social policy reasons. The coastline paradox

7360-427: The second principle of classification, a concordant coastline is a coastline where bands of different rock types run parallel to the shore. These rock types are usually of varying resistance , so the coastline forms distinctive landforms, such as coves. Discordant coastlines feature distinctive landforms because the rocks are eroded by the ocean waves . The less resistant rocks erode faster, creating inlets or bay ;

7452-404: The slope than up it. Steep waves that are close together and break with the surf plunging down onto the shore slope expend much of their energy lifting the sediment. The weak swash does not carry it far up the slope, and the strong backwash carries it further down the slope, where it either settles in deeper water or is carried along the shore by a longshore current induced by an angled approach of

7544-546: The supervision of TARURA-TEMEKE. Temeke Municipal is located along the Central Railway Line and TAZARA Railway Line, which operate from Dar es Salaam Port and serve the nation as well as the seven (7) bordering nations of Kenya, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, Rwanda, and Burundi. As final destinations for the railways, Kigoma , Mbeya, and Mwanza—both of which border the neighboring nations of the Democratic Republic of

7636-747: The terms coast and coastal are often used to describe a geographic location or region located on a coastline (e.g., New Zealand's West Coast , or the East , West , and Gulf Coast of the United States .) Coasts with a narrow continental shelf that are close to the open ocean are called pelagic coast , while other coasts are more sheltered coast in a gulf or bay . A shore , on the other hand, may refer to parts of land adjoining any large body of water, including oceans (sea shore) and lakes (lake shore). The Earth has approximately 620,000 kilometres (390,000 mi) of coastline. Coastal habitats, which extend to

7728-514: The threats of coasts has been captured in Sustainable Development Goal 14 "Life Below Water" which sets goals for international policy focused on preserving marine coastal ecosystems and supporting more sustainable economic practices for coastal communities. Likewise, the United Nations has declared 2021–2030 the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration , but restoration of coastal ecosystems has received insufficient attention. TANESCO The Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO)

7820-477: The total needed amount, are produced at the moment as part of the water supply. There are 232 deep boreholes owned by Temeke Municipal Council. 116 of the 232 boreholes—69 for primary schools, 23 for health centers, and 24 for secondary schools—are owned by the government. Out of 368,416 total residences, 9,516 are connected to the DAWASCO network in 13 of the 24 wards. Bore holes and shallow wells are dispersed across

7912-487: The wave the more energy it releases and the more sediment it moves. Coastlines with longer shores have more room for the waves to disperse their energy, while coasts with cliffs and short shore faces give little room for the wave energy to be dispersed. In these areas, the wave energy breaking against the cliffs is higher, and air and water are compressed into cracks in the rock, forcing the rock apart, breaking it down. Sediment deposited by waves comes from eroded cliff faces and

8004-476: The wave-front to the shore. These waves which erode the beach are called destructive waves. Low waves that are further apart and break by spilling , expend more of their energy in the swash which carries particles up the beach, leaving less energy for the backwash to transport them downslope, with a net constrictive influence on the beach. Riviera is an Italian word for "shoreline", ultimately derived from Latin ripa ("riverbank"). It came to be applied as

8096-407: The waves surge up the river estuaries from the ocean. Geologists classify coasts on the basis of tidal range into macrotidal coasts with a tidal range greater than 4 m (13 ft); mesotidal coasts with a tidal range of 2 to 4 m (6.6 to 13 ft); and microtidal coasts with a tidal range of less than 2 m (7 ft). The distinction between macrotidal and mesotidal coasts

8188-462: The whole ocean system are ultimately connected, although certain regional classifications are useful and relevant. The waters of the continental shelves represent such a region. The term "coastal waters" has been used in a wide variety of different ways in different contexts. In European Union environmental management it extends from the coast to just a few nautical miles while in the United States

8280-482: The world's people live in coastal regions. According to a United Nations atlas, 44% of all people live within 150 km (93 mi) of the sea. Many major cities are on or near good harbors and have port facilities. Some landlocked places have achieved port status by building canals . Nations defend their coasts against military invaders, smugglers and illegal migrants. Fixed coastal defenses have long been erected in many nations, and coastal countries typically have

8372-407: The years, the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair has solidified its position as the showcase for goods from East, Central, and Southern Africa as well as Tanzania. The Zaramo and Ndengereko minority were the district's original residents, but increasing urbanization has made Temeke one of Tanzania's most ethnically diverse districts. There is a large Makonde community in Temeke. The city had

8464-441: Was expanded upon by Benoit Mandelbrot . Tides often determine the range over which sediment is deposited or eroded. Areas with high tidal ranges allow waves to reach farther up the shore, and areas with lower tidal ranges produce deposition at a smaller elevation interval. The tidal range is influenced by the size and shape of the coastline. Tides do not typically cause erosion by themselves; however, tidal bores can erode as
