113-1331: Palpa District is not far from Pokhara and easily reached by bus. Palpa was the seat of the Hindu Sen kingdom that ruled over this region from the 16th century for almost 300 years so the headquarter of Palpa is called "Tansen" (Nepali: तानसेन). At the time of the 2021 Census Nepal , Palpa District had a population of 245,027. As their first language, 61.9% spoke Nepali , 34.3% Magar , 2.0% Newari , 0.6% Kumhali , 0.3% Bote , 0.2% Urdu , 0.1% Bhojpuri , 0.1% Hindi , 0.1% Tharu and 0.1% other languages. Ethnicity/caste: 52.6% were Magar , 17.5% Hill Brahmin , 7.8% Chhetri , 6.7% Kami , 3.4% Newar , 3.2% Sarki , 2.6% Kumal , 1.9% Damai /Dholi, 1.4% Thakuri , 0.6% Gharti/ Bhujel , 0.4% Musalman , 0.3% Bote, 0.3% other Dalit , 0.2% Gurung , 0.1% Badi , 0.1% Gaine , 0.1% Kathabaniyan, 0.1% Sanyasi/Dasnami, 0.1% Tharu and 0.2% others. 226-504: A gompa (Buddhist monastery), chorten and its particular architecture, and Tibetans have become a visible minority in the city. Until the end of the 1960s, the town was only accessible by foot and it was considered even more a mystical place than Kathmandu. The first road was completed in 1968 ( Siddhartha Highway ) after which tourism set in and the city grew rapidly. The area along the Phewa lake, called Lakeside , has developed into one of

339-415: A humid subtropical climate ; however, the elevation keeps temperatures moderate. Temperatures in summer average between 25 and 35 °C; in winter around −2 to 15 °C. Pokhara and nearby areas receive a high amount of precipitation. Lumle , 40 kilometres (25 miles) from Pokhara city center, receives the highest amount of rainfall (> 5600 mm/year or 222 inches/year) in the country. Snowfall

452-422: A beta particle (an electron , e ) and an electron antineutrino ( ν e ), one of the neutrons in the C nucleus changes to a proton and the C nucleus reverts to the stable (non-radioactive) isotope N . During its life, a plant or animal is in equilibrium with its surroundings by exchanging carbon either with the atmosphere or through its diet. It will, therefore, have

565-522: A decade. It was revised again in the early 1960s to 5,730 ± 40 years, which meant that many calculated dates in papers published prior to this were incorrect (the error in the half-life is about 3%). For consistency with these early papers, it was agreed at the 1962 Radiocarbon Conference in Cambridge (UK) to use the "Libby half-life" of 5568 years. Radiocarbon ages are still calculated using this half-life, and are known as "Conventional Radiocarbon Age". Since

678-444: A few international airlines. A new Pokhara International Airport is also present in the southeast of the city which has begun facilitating intercity and international travels. The Pokhara Regional International Airport (PRIA) opened January 1, 2023. Domestic airlines operate there. However, as of late October 2024, no international airlines serve the airport, despite incentives to do so. Flight duration from Kathmandu to Pokhara

791-423: A few years, but the surface waters also receive water from the deep ocean, which has more than 90% of the carbon in the reservoir. Water in the deep ocean takes about 1,000 years to circulate back through surface waters, and so the surface waters contain a combination of older water, with depleted C , and water recently at the surface, with C in equilibrium with the atmosphere. Creatures living at

904-408: A given sample stopped exchanging carbon – the older the sample, the less C will be left. The equation governing the decay of a radioactive isotope is: N = N 0 e − λ t {\displaystyle N=N_{0}\,e^{-\lambda t}\,} where N 0 is the number of atoms of the isotope in the original sample (at time t = 0, when

1017-400: A higher δ C than one that eats food with lower δ C values. The animal's own biochemical processes can also impact the results: for example, both bone minerals and bone collagen typically have a higher concentration of C than is found in the animal's diet, though for different biochemical reasons. The enrichment of bone C also implies that excreted material

1130-413: A mass of less than 1% of those on land and are not shown in the diagram. Accumulated dead organic matter, of both plants and animals, exceeds the mass of the biosphere by a factor of nearly 3, and since this matter is no longer exchanging carbon with its environment, it has a C / C ratio lower than that of the biosphere. The variation in the C / C ratio in different parts of

1243-854: A paper in Science in 1947, in which the authors commented that their results implied it would be possible to date materials containing carbon of organic origin. Libby and James Arnold proceeded to test the radiocarbon dating theory by analyzing samples with known ages. For example, two samples taken from the tombs of two Egyptian kings, Zoser and Sneferu , independently dated to 2625 BC plus or minus 75 years, were dated by radiocarbon measurement to an average of 2800 BC plus or minus 250 years. These results were published in Science in December 1949. Within 11 years of their announcement, more than 20 radiocarbon dating laboratories had been set up worldwide. In 1960, Libby

1356-492: A sample is, the less C there is to be detected, and because the half-life of C (the period of time after which half of a given sample will have decayed) is about 5,730 years, the oldest dates that can be reliably measured by this process date to approximately 50,000 years ago (in this interval about 99.8% of the C will have decayed), although special preparation methods occasionally make an accurate analysis of older samples possible. In 1960, Libby received

1469-505: A very strong military tradition with a significant number of its men being employed by the Nepali army. The Western Division HQ of the Nepalese Army is stationed at Bijayapur, Pokhara and its Area of Responsibility (AOR) consists of the entire Western Development Region of Nepal. The AOR of this division is 29,398 km and a total of 16 districts are under the division. The population of

1582-430: Is a metropolitan city located in central Nepal , which serves as the capital of Gandaki Province and is declared as the tourism capital of Nepal . It is the second most populous city of the nation after Kathmandu , with 599,504 inhabitants living in 120,594 households as of 2021 . It is the country's largest metropolitan city in terms of area. The city also serves as the headquarters of Kaski District . Pokhara

1695-429: Is also referred to individually as a carbon exchange reservoir. The different elements of the carbon exchange reservoir vary in how much carbon they store, and in how long it takes for the C generated by cosmic rays to fully mix with them. This affects the ratio of C to C in the different reservoirs, and hence the radiocarbon ages of samples that originated in each reservoir. The atmosphere, which

1808-475: Is approximately 30 minutes. Pokhara valley is rich in water sources. The major bodies of water in and around Pokhara are: The sporting activities are mainly centered in the multipurpose stadium Pokhara Rangasala (or Annapurna Stadium) in Rambazar . The popular sports are football, cricket , volleyball, basketball, martial arts, etc. The Sahara Club is one of the most active organizations promoting football in

1921-414: Is assumed to have originally had the same C / C ratio as the ratio in the atmosphere, and since the size of the sample is known, the total number of atoms in the sample can be calculated, yielding N 0 , the number of C atoms in the original sample. Measurement of N , the number of C atoms currently in the sample, allows the calculation of t , the age of the sample, using

2034-440: Is contaminated so that 1% of the sample is modern carbon, it will appear to be 600 years younger; for a sample that is 34,000 years old, the same amount of contamination would cause an error of 4,000 years. Contamination with old carbon, with no remaining C , causes an error in the other direction independent of age – a sample contaminated with 1% old carbon will appear to be about 80 years older than it truly is, regardless of

2147-439: Is currently being encroached upon by invasive water hyacinth (जलकुम्भी झार). In 2017, Pokhara Lekhnath Metropolitan City became Nepal's largest metropolitan city by area, occupying 464.24 km (179.24 sq mi)—which means the city is nine times larger than Kathmandu, 18 times larger than Lalitpur and 2.5 times larger than Bharatpur . Pokhara is known to be a popular tourist destination for visitors from all over

2260-428: Is depleted in C because of the marine effect, C is removed from the southern atmosphere more quickly than in the north. The effect is strengthened by strong upwelling around Antarctica. If the carbon in freshwater is partly acquired from aged carbon, such as rocks, then the result will be a reduction in the C / C ratio in the water. For example, rivers that pass over limestone , which

2373-400: Is depleted in C relative to the diet. Since C makes up about 1% of the carbon in a sample, the C / C ratio can be accurately measured by mass spectrometry . Typical values of δ C have been found by experiment for many plants, as well as for different parts of animals such as bone collagen , but when dating a given sample it is better to determine

2486-426: Is done by calibration curves (discussed below), which convert a measurement of C in a sample into an estimated calendar age. The calculations involve several steps and include an intermediate value called the "radiocarbon age", which is the age in "radiocarbon years" of the sample: an age quoted in radiocarbon years means that no calibration curve has been used − the calculations for radiocarbon years assume that

2599-587: Is in the northwestern corner of the Pokhara Valley , which is a widening of the Seti Gandaki valley that lies in the region ( Pahad ) of the Himalayas . In this region, the mountains rise very quickly, and within 30 kilometres (19 miles), the elevation rises from 1,000 to 7,500 metres (3,300 to 24,600 feet). As a result of this sharp rise in altitude the area of Pokhara has one of the highest precipitation rates in

2712-459: Is less CO 2 available for the photosynthetic reactions. Under these conditions, fractionation is reduced, and at temperatures above 14 °C (57 °F) the δ C values are correspondingly higher, while at lower temperatures, CO 2 becomes more soluble and hence more available to marine organisms. The δ C value for animals depends on their diet. An animal that eats food with high δ C values will have

2825-399: Is located 200 kilometres (120 miles) west of the capital, Kathmandu . The city is on the shore of Phewa Lake , and sits at an average elevation of approximately 822 m above sea level. The Annapurna Range, with three out of the ten highest peaks in the world— Dhaulagiri , Annapurna I and Manaslu —is within 15–35 mi (24–56 km) aerial range from the valley. In 2024, Pokhara

2938-418: Is made by the tourism and hospitalities industry. Tourism is the primary source of income for local people and the city. There are two 5-star hotels and approximately 305 other hotels that includes one 4-star, five 3-star, fifteen 2-star and non-star hotels in the city. The city promotes two major hilltops as viewpoints to see the city and surrounding panorama: World Peace Pagoda , built-in 1996 A.D. across

3051-415: Is mostly composed of calcium carbonate , will acquire carbonate ions. Similarly, groundwater can contain carbon derived from the rocks through which it has passed. These rocks are usually so old that they no longer contain any measurable C , so this carbon lowers the C / C ratio of the water it enters, which can lead to apparent ages of thousands of years for both the affected water and

3164-501: Is not observed in the valley, but surrounding hills experience occasional snowfall in the winter. Summers are humid and mild; most precipitation occurs during the monsoon season (June–September). Winter and spring skies are generally clear and sunny. The highest temperature ever recorded in Pokhara was 38.5 °C (101.3 °F) on 4 May 2013, while the lowest temperature ever recorded was 0.5 °C (32.9 °F) on 13 January 2012. At

3277-456: Is sometimes called) percolates into the rest of the reservoir. Photosynthesis is the primary process by which carbon moves from the atmosphere into living things. In photosynthetic pathways C is absorbed slightly more easily than C , which in turn is more easily absorbed than C . The differential uptake of the three carbon isotopes leads to C / C and C / C ratios in plants that differ from

3390-416: Is substantially longer than the time it takes for its C to decay below detectable levels, fossil fuels contain almost no C . As a result, beginning in the late 19th century, there was a noticeable drop in the proportion of C in the atmosphere as the carbon dioxide generated from burning fossil fuels began to accumulate. Conversely, nuclear testing increased the amount of C in

3503-481: Is the Panché Baaja (पञ्चे बाजा), a traditional musical band performed generally during marriage ceremonies by the damaai musicians. The musical culture in Pokhara is quite dynamic and in recent years, Western rock and roll, pop, rap and hip-hop are becoming increasingly popular with frequently held musical concerts; however, the traditional lok and modern (semi-classical) Nepali music are predominantly favored by

3616-453: Is the main pathway by which C is created: n + 7 N → 6 C + p where n represents a neutron and p represents a proton . Once produced, the C quickly combines with the oxygen ( O ) in the atmosphere to form first carbon monoxide ( CO ), and ultimately carbon dioxide ( CO 2 ). C + O 2 → CO + O CO + OH → CO 2 + H Carbon dioxide produced in this way diffuses in

3729-565: Is usually needed to determine the size of the offset, for example by comparing the radiocarbon age of deposited freshwater shells with associated organic material. Volcanic eruptions eject large amounts of carbon into the air. The carbon is of geological origin and has no detectable C , so the C / C ratio in the vicinity of the volcano is depressed relative to surrounding areas. Dormant volcanoes can also emit aged carbon. Plants that photosynthesize this carbon also have lower C / C ratios: for example, plants in

3842-399: Is where C is generated, contains about 1.9% of the total carbon in the reservoirs, and the C it contains mixes in less than seven years. The ratio of C to C in the atmosphere is taken as the baseline for the other reservoirs: if another reservoir has a lower ratio of C to C , it indicates that the carbon is older and hence that either some of

3955-525: The C atoms in the sample and not just the few that happen to decay during the measurements; it can therefore be used with much smaller samples (as small as individual plant seeds), and gives results much more quickly. The development of radiocarbon dating has had a profound impact on archaeology . In addition to permitting more accurate dating within archaeological sites than previous methods, it allows comparison of dates of events across great distances. Histories of archaeology often refer to its impact as

4068-402: The C has decayed, or the reservoir is receiving carbon that is not at the atmospheric baseline. The ocean surface is an example: it contains 2.4% of the carbon in the exchange reservoir, but there is only about 95% as much C as would be expected if the ratio were the same as in the atmosphere. The time it takes for carbon from the atmosphere to mix with the surface ocean is only

4181-489: The C / C ratio in the atmosphere. This increase in C concentration almost exactly cancels out the decrease caused by the upwelling of water (containing old, and hence C -depleted, carbon) from the deep ocean, so that direct measurements of C radiation are similar to measurements for the rest of the biosphere. Correcting for isotopic fractionation, as is done for all radiocarbon dates to allow comparison between results from different parts of

4294-404: The δ C value for that sample directly than to rely on the published values. The carbon exchange between atmospheric CO 2 and carbonate at the ocean surface is also subject to fractionation, with C in the atmosphere more likely than C to dissolve in the ocean. The result is an overall increase in the C / C ratio in the ocean of 1.5%, relative to

4407-507: The Gorkha Kingdom and first monarch of the Kingdom of Nepal , added Pokhara to his kingdom. It had by then become an important trading place on the routes from Kathmandu to Jumla and from India to Tibet. The first settlement of the valley is theorized to have taken place when the first King of Kaski , Kulamandan Shah Khad (also called Bichitra Khan and Jagati Khan), made Batulechaur in

4520-514: The Indo-China war in 1962, the old trading route to India from Tibet through Pokhara became defunct. Today only a few caravans from Mustang arrive in Bagar. In recent decades, Pokhara has become a major tourist destination: it is considered the tourism capital of Nepal, mainly for adventure tourism and the base for the famous Annapurna Circuit trek. Thus, a major contribution to the local economy

4633-706: The Khas community. Magar communities are also present mostly in the southern outlying hills. A Newar community is almost non-existent in the villages of outlying hills outside the Pokhara city limits. From 1959 to 1962, approximately 300,000 exiles entered Nepal from neighboring Tibet following its annexation by China. Most of the Tibetan exiles then sought asylum in Dharamshala and other Tibetan exile communities in India. According to UNHCR , since 1989, approximately 2500 Tibetans cross

4746-516: The Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work. Research has been ongoing since the 1960s to determine what the proportion of C in the atmosphere has been over the past 50,000 years. The resulting data, in the form of a calibration curve , is now used to convert a given measurement of radiocarbon in a sample into an estimate of the sample's calendar age. Other corrections must be made to account for

4859-659: The "radiocarbon revolution". Radiocarbon dating has allowed key transitions in prehistory to be dated, such as the end of the last ice age , and the beginning of the Neolithic and Bronze Age in different regions. In 1939, Martin Kamen and Samuel Ruben of the Radiation Laboratory at Berkeley began experiments to determine if any of the elements common in organic matter had isotopes with half-lives long enough to be of value in biomedical research. They synthesized C using

4972-544: The 1950s and artists such as Jhalakman Gandharva, Dharma Raj Thapa are considered pioneers in bringing the lok git into mass media. During early and late 1990s, bands from Pokhara like Nepathya started their very successful fusion of western rock and pop with traditional folk music. Since then several other musical groups in Nepal have adopted the lok -pop/rock style producing dozens of albums every year. Another important part of cultural music of western Nepal, and hence Pokhara,

5085-404: The 1990s, Pokhara has experienced rapid urbanization. As a result, service-sector industries have increasingly contributed to the local economy overtaking the traditional agriculture. An effect of urbanization is seen in high real estate prices, among the highest in the country. The major contributors to the economy of Pokhara are manufacturing and service sector including tourism; agriculture and

5198-781: The AOR of Western Division is 4,571,013. Both the British Army and the Indian Army have regional recruitment and pensioners facilitation camps in Pokhara. The British Gurkha Camp is located at Deep Heights in the northeast of the Pokhara city and the Indian Gorkha Pension Camp is on the south-western side of the city, Rambazar. Electricity in Pokhara is regulated and distributed by the NEA Nepal Electricity Authority . Water supply and sanitation facilities are provided by

5311-717: The Nepal Water Supply Corporation (NWSC). Pokhara has more than eight hundred private and public high educational institutions. There are several institutions of higher learning up to the doctorate level in social sciences, business, and science and technology. Pokhara has extensive privately operated public transportation system running throughout the city, adjoining townships and nearby villages. Pokhara Mahanagar Bus Bebasaya Samiti (green, brown and blue buses), Mama Bhanja Transport (blue buses), Bindabashini Samiti(blue buses), Phewa Bus Bebasaya Samiti(mini micros) and Lekhnath Bus Bebasaya Samiti (green and white buses) are

5424-569: The Pokhara valley favors the formation of caves and several caves can be found within city limits and neighboring cities as well. In the south of the city, a tributary of the Seti Gandaki River flowing out of the Phewa Lake disappears at Patale Chhango (पाताले छाँगो, Nepali for Hell's Falls, also called Davis Falls, after someone who supposedly fell in) into an underground gorge, to reappear 500 metres (1,600 feet) further south. The city has

5537-665: The Sabche Cirque in the Annapurna range. Pokhara lies on an important old trading route between China and India . In the 17th century, it was part of the Kingdom of Kaski which was one of the Chaubisi rajya (24 Kingdoms of Nepal, चौबिसे राज्य) ruled by a branch of the Shah dynasty . Many of the hills around Pokhara have medieval ruins from that time. In 1786, Prithvi Narayan Shah , the last ruler of

5650-399: The actual calendar date, both because it uses the wrong value for the half-life of C , and because no correction (calibration) has been applied for the historical variation of C in the atmosphere over time. Carbon is distributed throughout the atmosphere, the biosphere, and the oceans; these are referred to collectively as the carbon exchange reservoir, and each component

5763-418: The appropriate correction for the location of their samples. The effect also applies to marine organisms such as shells, and marine mammals such as whales and seals, which have radiocarbon ages that appear to be hundreds of years old. The northern and southern hemispheres have atmospheric circulation systems that are sufficiently independent of each other that there is a noticeable time lag in mixing between

5876-438: The atmosphere might be expected to decrease over thousands of years, but C is constantly being produced in the lower stratosphere and upper troposphere , primarily by galactic cosmic rays , and to a lesser degree by solar cosmic rays. These cosmic rays generate neutrons as they travel through the atmosphere which can strike nitrogen-14 ( N ) atoms and turn them into C . The following nuclear reaction

5989-547: The atmosphere, is dissolved in the ocean, and is taken up by plants via photosynthesis . Animals eat the plants, and ultimately the radiocarbon is distributed throughout the biosphere . The ratio of C to C is approximately 1.25 parts of C to 10 parts of C . In addition, about 1% of the carbon atoms are of the stable isotope C . The equation for the radioactive decay of C is: 6 C → 7 N + e + ν e By emitting

6102-399: The atmosphere, which reached a maximum in about 1965 of almost double the amount present in the atmosphere prior to nuclear testing. Measurement of radiocarbon was originally done with beta-counting devices, which counted the amount of beta radiation emitted by decaying C atoms in a sample. More recently, accelerator mass spectrometry has become the method of choice; it counts all

6215-421: The atmospheric C / C ratio has not changed over time. Calculating radiocarbon ages also requires the value of the half-life for C . In Libby's 1949 paper he used a value of 5720 ± 47 years, based on research by Engelkemeir et al. This was remarkably close to the modern value, but shortly afterwards the accepted value was revised to 5568 ± 30 years, and this value was in use for more than

6328-425: The biosphere, gives an apparent age of about 400 years for ocean surface water. Libby's original exchange reservoir hypothesis assumed that the C / C ratio in the exchange reservoir is constant all over the world, but it has since been discovered that there are several causes of variation in the ratio across the reservoir. The CO 2 in the atmosphere transfers to the ocean by dissolving in

6441-581: The border into Nepal each year, many of whom arrive in Pokhara typically as a transit to Tibetan exile communities in India. About 50,000–60,000 Tibetan exiles reside in Nepal, and approximately 20,000 of the exiled Tibetans live in one of the 12 consolidated camps, eight in Kathmandu and four in and around Pokhara. The four Tibetan settlements in Pokhara are Jampaling, Paljorling, Tashi Ling, and Tashi Palkhel. These camps have evolved into well-built settlements, each with

6554-518: The butterflies, found in the Western and Annapurna Conservation Area region of Nepal; and Gurkha Museum featuring the history of the Gurkha soldiers. There are around 375 tourist standard hotels, and many more are in the pipeline. Annapurna Cable Car takes tourists from Lakeside to Sarangkot and back. Another one being built will connect Phewa Lake with World Peace Stupa. The Pokhara region has

6667-450: The calibration curve (IntCal) also reports past atmospheric C concentration using this conventional age, any conventional ages calibrated against the IntCal curve will produce a correct calibrated age. When a date is quoted, the reader should be aware that if it is an uncalibrated date (a term used for dates given in radiocarbon years) it may differ substantially from the best estimate of

6780-435: The carbon exchange reservoir means that a straightforward calculation of the age of a sample based on the amount of C it contains will often give an incorrect result. There are several other possible sources of error that need to be considered. The errors are of four general types: In the early years of using the technique, it was understood that it depended on the atmospheric C / C ratio having remained

6893-500: The carbon exchange reservoir, but because of the long delay in mixing with the deep ocean, the actual effect is a 3% reduction. A much larger effect comes from above-ground nuclear testing, which released large numbers of neutrons into the atmosphere, resulting in the creation of C . From about 1950 until 1963, when atmospheric nuclear testing was banned , it is estimated that several tonnes of C were created. If all this extra C had immediately been spread across

These instruments are prominent features of the traditional folk music ( lok gít or lok geet) in Pokhara, which is actually the western (Gandaki, Dhaulagiri and Lumbini) branch of Nepali lok geet . Some examples of music of this region are Resham Firiri (रेशम फिरिरी) and Khyalee Tune (ख्याली धुन). The lok geet started airing in Radio Nepal during

7345-491: The city where there are more open lands and unhindered view of the surrounding mountains. Most of the tourists visiting Pokhara trek to the Annapurna Base Camp and Mustang . To the east of the Pokhara valley, there are seven smaller lakes such as Begnas Lake , Rupa Lake, Khaste lake, Maidi lake, Neureni lake, Dipang lake. Begnas Lake is known for its fishery projects. After the occupation of Tibet by China in 1950 and

7458-516: The city. The floor of the valley is plain, resembles Terai due to its gravel-like surface, and has slanted orientation from northwest to southeast. The city is surrounded by the hills overlooking the entire valley. Phewa Lake was slightly enlarged by damming which poses a risk of silting up due to the inflow during the monsoon . The outflowing water is partially used for hydropower generation at Fewa Hydropower Station . The dam collapsed in 1974 which resulted in draining of its water and exposing

Even within the city, there is a noticeable difference in rainfall between the south and the north: The northern part at the foothills of the mountains experiences a proportionally higher amount of precipitation. The Seti Gandaki is the main river flowing through the city. The Seti Gandaki (White Gandaki) and its tributaries have created several gorges and canyons in and around Pokhara that give intriguingly long sections of terrace features to

7684-435: The date of the sample. Samples for dating need to be converted into a form suitable for measuring the C content; this can mean conversion to gaseous, liquid, or solid form, depending on the measurement technique to be used. Before this can be done, the sample must be treated to remove any contamination and any unwanted constituents. This includes removing visible contaminants, such as rootlets that may have penetrated

7797-490: The early 20th century hence gives an apparent date older than the true date. For the same reason, C concentrations in the neighbourhood of large cities are lower than the atmospheric average. This fossil fuel effect (also known as the Suess effect, after Hans Suess, who first reported it in 1955) would only amount to a reduction of 0.2% in C activity if the additional carbon from fossil fuels were distributed throughout

7910-401: The entire carbon exchange reservoir, it would have led to an increase in the C / C ratio of only a few per cent, but the immediate effect was to almost double the amount of C in the atmosphere, with the peak level occurring in 1964 for the northern hemisphere, and in 1966 for the southern hemisphere. The level has since dropped, as this bomb pulse or "bomb carbon" (as it

8023-424: The equation above. The half-life of a radioactive isotope (usually denoted by t 1/2 ) is a more familiar concept than the mean-life, so although the equations above are expressed in terms of the mean-life, it is more usual to quote the value of C 's half-life than its mean-life. The currently accepted value for the half-life of C is 5,700 ± 30 years. This means that after 5,700 years, only half of

8136-468: The errors caused by the variation over time in the C / C ratio. These curves are described in more detail below . Coal and oil began to be burned in large quantities during the 19th century. Both are sufficiently old that they contain little or no detectable C and, as a result, the CO 2 released substantially diluted the atmospheric C / C ratio. Dating an object from

8249-422: The foreign and domestic remittances. Tourism, service sector and manufacturing contributes approximately 58% to the economy, remittances about 20% and agriculture nearly 16%. Pokhara has a number of hydroelectric power plants. There are numerous temples, gumbas (Buddhist monasteries) and churches in and around Pokhara valley. Many temples serve as combined places of worship for Hindus and Buddhists. Some of

8362-908: The former is much easier to measure, and the latter can be easily derived: the depletion of C relative to C is proportional to the difference in the atomic masses of the two isotopes, so the depletion for C is twice the depletion of C . The fractionation of C , known as δ C , is calculated as follows: δ C 13 = ( ( C 13 C 12 ) sample ( C 13 C 12 ) standard − 1 ) × 1000 {\displaystyle \delta {\ce {^{13}C}}=\left({\frac {\left({\frac {{\ce {^{13}C}}}{{\ce {^{12}C}}}}\right)_{\text{sample}}}{\left({\frac {{\ce {^{13}C}}}{{\ce {^{12}C}}}}\right)_{\text{standard}}}}-1\right)\times 1000} ‰ where

8475-410: The general population. More musical concerts are held in Pokhara than in any other city in the country. Radiocarbon dating Radiocarbon dating (also referred to as carbon dating or carbon-14 dating ) is a method for determining the age of an object containing organic material by using the properties of radiocarbon , a radioactive isotope of carbon . The method was developed in

8588-454: The initial C will remain; a quarter will remain after 11,400 years; an eighth after 17,100 years; and so on. The above calculations make several assumptions, such as that the level of C in the atmosphere has remained constant over time. In fact, the level of C in the atmosphere has varied significantly and as a result, the values provided by the equation above have to be corrected by using data from other sources. This

8701-404: The inner tree rings do not get their C replenished and instead only lose C through radioactive decay. Hence each ring preserves a record of the atmospheric C / C ratio of the year it grew in. Carbon-dating the wood from the tree rings themselves provides the check needed on the atmospheric C / C ratio: with a sample of known date, and a measurement of

8814-659: The laboratory's cyclotron accelerator and soon discovered that the atom's half-life was far longer than had been previously thought. This was followed by a prediction by Serge A. Korff , then employed at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia , that the interaction of thermal neutrons with N in the upper atmosphere would create C . It had previously been thought that C would be more likely to be created by deuterons interacting with C . At some time during World War II, Willard Libby , who

8927-563: The land leading to illegal land encroachment; since then the dam has been rebuilt. The power plant is about 100 metres (330 feet) below at the bottom of the Phusre Khola gorge. Water from Phewa is diverted for irrigation into the southern Pokhara valley. The eastern Pokhara Valley receives irrigation water through a canal running from a reservoir by the Seti in the north of the city. Some parts of Phewa lake are used as commercial cage fisheries. The lake

9040-511: The late 1940s at the University of Chicago by Willard Libby , based on the constant creation of radiocarbon ( C ) in the Earth's atmosphere by the interaction of cosmic rays with atmospheric nitrogen . The resulting C combines with atmospheric oxygen to form radioactive carbon dioxide , which is incorporated into plants by photosynthesis ; animals then acquire C by eating

9153-418: The major tourism hubs of Nepal. Due to the high population density and the frequency of natural disasters, western Nepal is considered one of the most disaster-prone regions in the world. Pokhara is considered particularly vulnerable to earthquakes and floods because the Seti Gandaki River flows through the city. For example, the strongest earthquakes in the region include those of 2015 in Nepal . Pokhara

9266-502: The neighbourhood of the Furnas caldera in the Azores were found to have apparent ages that ranged from 250 years to 3320 years. Any addition of carbon to a sample of a different age will cause the measured date to be inaccurate. Contamination with modern carbon causes a sample to appear to be younger than it really is: the effect is greater for older samples. If a sample that is 17,000 years old

9379-473: The northern side of the valley his winter capital during the mid 14th century. The people settled here included Parajuli Brahmins, who were asked to look after the Bindhyabasini temple and were given some land in that locality as Birta. Dhobi Gauda was the first market center developed in Pokhara valley before the last King of Kaski brought sixteen families of Newars from Kathmandu (Bhaktapur) to develop

9492-420: The ocean surface have the same C ratios as the water they live in, and as a result of the reduced C / C ratio, the radiocarbon age of marine life is typically about 400 years. Organisms on land are in closer equilibrium with the atmosphere and have the same C / C ratio as the atmosphere. These organisms contain about 1.3% of the carbon in the reservoir; sea organisms have

9605-635: The organism from which the sample was taken died), and N is the number of atoms left after time t . λ is a constant that depends on the particular isotope; for a given isotope it is equal to the reciprocal of the mean-life – i.e. the average or expected time a given atom will survive before undergoing radioactive decay. The mean-life, denoted by τ , of C is 8,267 years, so the equation above can be rewritten as: t = ln ⁡ ( N 0 / N ) ⋅ 8267 years {\displaystyle t=\ln(N_{0}/N)\cdot {\text{8267 years}}} The sample

9718-440: The plants and freshwater organisms that live in it. This is known as the hard water effect because it is often associated with calcium ions, which are characteristic of hard water; other sources of carbon such as humus can produce similar results, and can also reduce the apparent age if they are of more recent origin than the sample. The effect varies greatly and there is no general offset that can be applied; additional research

9831-430: The plants. When the animal or plant dies, it stops exchanging carbon with its environment, and thereafter the amount of C it contains begins to decrease as the C undergoes radioactive decay . Measuring the proportion of C in a sample from a dead plant or animal, such as a piece of wood or a fragment of bone, provides information that can be used to calculate when the animal or plant died. The older

9944-424: The popular temples, gumbas and churches are: The municipality of Pokhara spans 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) from north to south and 6 kilometres (3.7 miles) from east to west but, unlike the capital Kathmandu, it is quite loosely built up and still has much green space. Nepal The gorge through which the river flows is crossed at five places: K.I. Singh Pool, Mahendrapul and Prithvi Highway Pool from north to south of

10057-413: The pre-existing Egyptian chronology nor the new radiocarbon dating method could be assumed to be accurate, but a third possibility was that the C / C ratio had changed over time. The question was resolved by the study of tree rings : comparison of overlapping series of tree rings allowed the construction of a continuous sequence of tree-ring data that spanned 8,000 years. (Since that time

10170-467: The present-day market (i.e., old market) in the 1770s. Prior to that people were settled in the peripheral hills. Pokhara was envisioned as a commercial center by the King of Kaski in the mid 18th century A.D. when Newars of Bhaktapur migrated to Pokhara, upon being invited by the king, and settled near main business locations such as Bindhyabasini temple , Nalakomukh and Bhairab Tole . Most of Pokhara, at

10283-618: The private companies that provide public bus transportation facility in and around Pokhara Valley . The public transport mainly consists of local and city buses, micros, micro-buses and metered-taxis. Pokhara is well connected to the rest of the country through permanent road and air links. The main mode of transportation are Cars, Motorbikes, Public Buses, Taxis and the Purano Bus Park is the main hub for buses plying countrywide. The all-season Pokhara Airport with regular flights to Kathmandu and Mustang are operated by various domestic and

10396-400: The proportion of C in different types of organisms (fractionation), and the varying levels of C throughout the biosphere (reservoir effects). Additional complications come from the burning of fossil fuels such as coal and oil, and from the above-ground nuclear tests performed in the 1950s and 1960s. Because the time it takes to convert biological materials to fossil fuels

10509-405: The ratios in the atmosphere. This effect is known as isotopic fractionation. To determine the degree of fractionation that takes place in a given plant, the amounts of both C and C isotopes are measured, and the resulting C / C ratio is then compared to a standard ratio known as PDB. The C / C ratio is used instead of C / C because

10622-415: The same over the preceding few thousand years. To verify the accuracy of the method, several artefacts that were datable by other techniques were tested; the results of the testing were in reasonable agreement with the true ages of the objects. Over time, however, discrepancies began to appear between the known chronology for the oldest Egyptian dynasties and the radiocarbon dates of Egyptian artefacts. Neither

10735-456: The same proportion of C as the atmosphere, or in the case of marine animals or plants, with the ocean. Once it dies, it ceases to acquire C , but the C within its biological material at that time will continue to decay, and so the ratio of C to C in its remains will gradually decrease. Because C decays at a known rate, the proportion of radiocarbon can be used to determine how long it has been since

10848-412: The sample since its burial. Alkali and acid washes can be used to remove humic acid and carbonate contamination, but care has to be taken to avoid removing the part of the sample that contains the carbon to be tested. Particularly for older samples, it may be useful to enrich the amount of C in the sample before testing. This can be done with a thermal diffusion column. The process takes about

10961-511: The southern shore of Phewa Lake and Sarangkot , which is northwest of the city. In February 2004, International Mountain Museum (IMM) was opened for public in Ratopahiro to boost the city's tourism. Other museums are Pokhara Regional Museum; an ethnographic museum; Annapurna Natural History Museum which houses preserved specimens of flora and fauna, and contains a particularly extensive collection of

11074-401: The surface water as carbonate and bicarbonate ions; at the same time the carbonate ions in the water are returning to the air as CO 2 . This exchange process brings C from the atmosphere into the surface waters of the ocean, but the C thus introduced takes a long time to percolate through the entire volume of the ocean. The deepest parts of the ocean mix very slowly with

11187-590: The surface waters, and as a result water from some deep ocean areas has an apparent radiocarbon age of several thousand years. Upwelling mixes this "old" water with the surface water, giving the surface water an apparent age of about several hundred years (after correcting for fractionation). This effect is not uniform – the average effect is about 400 years, but there are local deviations of several hundred years for areas that are geographically close to each other. These deviations can be accounted for in calibration, and users of software such as CALIB can provide as an input

11300-422: The surface waters, and the mixing is uneven. The main mechanism that brings deep water to the surface is upwelling, which is more common in regions closer to the equator. Upwelling is also influenced by factors such as the topography of the local ocean bottom and coastlines, the climate, and wind patterns. Overall, the mixing of deep and surface waters takes far longer than the mixing of atmospheric CO 2 with

11413-1470: The time of the 2021 Nepal census , Pokhara Metropolitan City had a population of 599,504. In terms of religion, 82.4% were Hindu , 13.2% Buddhist , 2.4% Christian , 0.9% Muslim , 0.6% Bon , 0.2% Prakriti , 0.1% Kirati and 0.2% others. In terms of literacy, 84.3% could read and write, 1.4% could only read and 14.3% could neither read nor write. Caste and Ethnic groups in Pokhara language in Pokhara Since

11526-534: The time, was largely inhabited by Khas ( Brahmin , Chhetri and Dalits ), Gurungs , Magars and Thakuri . At present, the Khas , Gurung (Tamu) and Magar form the dominant community of Pokhara. There is also a sizeable Newari population in the city. Batulechaur in the far north of Pokhara is home to the Gandharvas or Gaaineys (the tribe of the musicians). The nearby hills around Pokhara are covered by Gurung villages with few places belonging to

11639-478: The tree-ring data series has been extended to 13,900 years.) In the 1960s, Hans Suess was able to use the tree-ring sequence to show that the dates derived from radiocarbon were consistent with the dates assigned by Egyptologists. This was possible because although annual plants, such as corn, have a C / C ratio that reflects the atmospheric ratio at the time they were growing, trees only add material to their outermost tree ring in any given year, while

11752-404: The two. The atmospheric C / C ratio is lower in the southern hemisphere, with an apparent additional age of about 40 years for radiocarbon results from the south as compared to the north. This is because the greater surface area of ocean in the southern hemisphere means that there is more carbon exchanged between the ocean and the atmosphere than in the north. Since the surface ocean

11865-434: The value of N (the number of atoms of C remaining in the sample), the carbon-dating equation allows the calculation of N 0 – the number of atoms of C in the sample at the time the tree ring was formed – and hence the C / C ratio in the atmosphere at that time. Equipped with the results of carbon-dating the tree rings, it became possible to construct calibration curves designed to correct

11978-484: The village of Lumle at 1,740 metres (5,710 feet) touches the base of the Annapurna mountain range . Pokhara, the city of lakes, is the second-largest city of Nepal after Kathmandu . Three 8,000-metre (26,000-foot) peaks ( Dhaulagiri , Annapurna , Manaslu ) can be seen from the city. The Machhapuchchhre ( Fishtail ) with an elevation of 6,993 metres (22,943 feet) is the closest to the city. The porous underground of

12091-550: The way, near Sarangkot hill, high mountain sports activity, paragliding is a good attraction for tourists as well as domestic tourists for adventure activities Nearby Sarangkot hill has developed as a good attraction for adventure activities such as paragliding and skydiving . The Pokhara city marathon, high altitude marathon are some activities attracting mass participation. Adventure sports such as base jumping, paragliding, canyoning, rock climbing, bungee jumping, etc. are targeted towards tourists. Pokhara Rhinos represents

12204-510: The world. The Nepali word " Pokhari " ( Nepali : पोखरी , pronounced [ˈpokʰʌɾi] ) means "pond". pokhara is a variant of Pokhari as the city has numerous ponds. By radiocarbon dating and investigating the alluvial deposits of Pokhara Valley, researchers have found that there were at least three large medieval earthquakes in 1000, 1255, and 1344 AD . Up to 9 cubic kilometres of conglomerates, massive mud and silt show indications of one or several megafloods that emanated from

12317-478: The world. Every year, many people visit the location in order to travel to the Annapurna range and famous religious place muktinath. The tourist district is along the north shore of the Phewa lake ( Baidam , Lakeside, and Damside). It is mainly made up of small shops, non-star tourist hotels, restaurants, and bars . Most upscale and starred hotels are on the southern shore of the Phewa Lake and southeastern fringes of

12430-494: The ‰ sign indicates parts per thousand . Because the PDB standard contains an unusually high proportion of C , most measured δ C values are negative. For marine organisms, the details of the photosynthesis reactions are less well understood, and the δ C values for marine photosynthetic organisms are dependent on temperature. At higher temperatures, CO 2 has poor solubility in water, which means there

12543-411: Was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this work. In nature, carbon exists as three isotopes . Carbon-12 ( C ) and carbon-13 ( C ) are stable and nonradioactive; carbon-14 ( C ), also known as "radiocarbon", is radioactive. The half-life of C (the time it takes for half of a given amount of C to decay ) is about 5,730 years, so its concentration in

12656-682: Was declared as the tourism capital of Nepal, being a base for trekkers undertaking the Annapurna Circuit through the Annapurna Conservation Area region of the Annapurna ranges in the Himalayas . The city is also home to many of the elite Gurkha soldiers, soldiers native to South Asia of Nepalese nationality recruited for the British Army , Nepalese Army , Indian Army , Gurkha Contingent Singapore , Gurkha Reserve Unit Brunei , UN peacekeeping forces and in war zones around

12769-780: Was then at Berkeley, learned of Korff's research and conceived the idea that it might be possible to use radiocarbon for dating. In 1945, Libby moved to the University of Chicago , where he began his work on radiocarbon dating. He published a paper in 1946 in which he proposed that the carbon in living matter might include C as well as non-radioactive carbon. Libby and several collaborators proceeded to experiment with methane collected from sewage works in Baltimore, and after isotopically enriching their samples they were able to demonstrate that they contained C . By contrast, methane created from petroleum showed no radiocarbon activity because of its age. The results were summarized in
