The Fiat Stilo (Type 192) is a small family car available as a three- and a five-door hatchback , as well as an estate ( Fiat Stilo Multi Wagon ), produced by Italian automaker Fiat . The Stilo hatchbacks were presented in March 2001 at the Bologna Motor Show , and launched on European market in October 2001 to replace the Fiat Bravo/Brava , with the Stilo Multi Wagon following in January 2003.

43-764: The Fiat Bravo was the successor of the Stilo in most markets, however, the five-door Stilo continued to be manufactured in Brazil until October 2010, when it too was replaced by the Bravo. The Stilo came in third place in the European Car of the Year awards for 2002, behind the Peugeot 307 and Renault Laguna . The Stilo's styling received mixed reviews, with many journalists and enthusiasts criticising it as being too bland and too German looking, as

For markets in the EMEA , the Bravo was produced in Fiat's Piedimonte S. Germano plant. Blue&Me is a new feature which was first introduced with the Fiat Grande Punto , and was fitted as standard on the Bravo Dynamic and Sport. 129-472: A minimum compulsory standard whilst Euro NCAP is concerned with best possible current practice. Progress with vehicle safety legislation can be slow, particularly as all EU Member States’ views have to be taken into account. Also, once in place, legislation provides no further incentive to improve, whereas Euro NCAP provides a continuing incentive by regularly enhancing its assessment procedures to stimulate further improvements in vehicle safety." 172-518: A mobile phone. It is also capable of displaying SMS text on the dash screen, and it has built in voice activation. Another part of the system is the inclusion of a USB connector so that an MP3 player or USB flashcard can be plugged in, giving the car's entertainment system access to MP3 files stored on the unit. In Australia, the Fiat Bravo was sold as the Fiat Ritmo, since Mazda Australia owns rights to

215-646: A rear wheel problem that may have caused thirty accidents and eight deaths. Fiat denied any wrongdoing, saying that the rear wheel problem was not the cause of the accidents, but rather caused by them. 769,000 Stilo were produced, including 102,662 in Brazil. The Stilo has been a big failure for Fiat, as the company expected to reach production to 400,000 annual units. Overall, due to insufficient sales, Fiat lost an estimated €2,730 per vehicle produced. 258-462: A result of Euro NCAP, European automakers' cars have become much safer over the years. Test results are commonly presented by motor press, and in turn, greatly influence consumer demand for a vehicle. One notable example of this is the Rover 100 (an update of a 1980 design, first marketed as an Austin ), which after receiving a one-star Adult Occupant Rating in the tests in 1997, suffered from poor sales and

Euro NCAP is a voluntary vehicle safety rating system created by the Swedish Road Administration , the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile and International Consumer Research & Testing , backed by fourteen members, and motoring and consumer organisations in several EU countries. They provide European consumers with information regarding the safety of passenger vehicles. In 1998, operations moved from London to Brussels. The programme

645-439: The "Bravo" name (as used on a commercial vehicle). It was introduced there in February 2008, however, it was discontinued the following year, due to slow sales, only 463 units were sold in total. The Bravo was also built in Brazil from 2010 to 2016, and was sold there and throughout South America (with the exception of Argentina, Chile and Colombia, who receive the Bravo from Italy). In January 2007, What Car? reported that Fiat

In the Americas, the Stilo was partially replaced by the new Bravo at the end of 2010, when it will be built in Brazil; from 2007 on the Italian import is available in Chile and Venezuela . Fiat Automóveis introduced a facelifted Stilo in the end of January 2008, in which the Dualogic automated manual gearbox was released, being available to every version with

The car also got minor cosmetic changes to front grille, bonnet, side bumpers and to the taillights, in order to end its production cycle, which is expected to happen in 2010. For the MY2009, Fiat withdrew the Abarth version from the market in Brazil;

774-487: The 2003 Nissan Micra and Renault Mégane . As the model range aged, the range of available options was reduced. However, when pushed the Stilo resists understeer, although arguably its soft spring and damper rate dull the experience. The engine range, particularly the 1.2-litre petrol, was also generally criticised for being underpowered. However, the 1.6 version is the last iteration of the old Fiat 128 SOHC engine which provided strong performance. The car's fuel economy

817-534: The Bravo got a new "eco" 90 PS (66 kW; 89 hp) variant of the Multijet diesel. In June 2010, two petrol engines were updated, the 1.4 T-Jet is fitted with the new Multiair technology, and the base 1.4 T-Jet was also updated to Euro 5 specification. The Fiat Bravo passed the Euro NCAP car safety tests, with following ratings: Euro NCAP The European New Car Assessment Programme ( Euro NCAP )

Chile did not get the JTD, but was the only country in the region to receive the Italian-made three-door and Multi Wagon versions. Diesel cars were not legally available to Brazilian private car buyers. A Schumacher special edition of

989-519: The Punto's 1.4-liter unit, increasing the car's power to 95 PS (70 kW; 94 hp), again combined with the six-speed gearbox. Also, the taillights were altered, and the Abarth version gained a traditional manual gearbox, instead of the Selespeed . The original engine and gearbox combinations were: The Fiat Stilo passed the Euro NCAP car safety tests, with following ratings: A Group N version of

1032-593: The Schumacher GP, with general modifications by British car specialists, Prodrive . The Stilo was originally offered in some markets with a radar assisted cruise control option; it included sensors in the front bumper and rear of the car to adjust the speed of the car according to other vehicles' speed. This was soon dropped as it became apparent that interference was creating undesired results. A keyless entry, named 'Easy Go', push-button start, similar in function to Citroën 's, Mercedes-Benz 's and BMW Mini 's systems,

1075-667: The Stilo was added in 2004 and lasted until 2006; contrary to the European version, which was based on the three-door version and equipped with the 2.4 twenty valve engine, the Brazilian was only available with five doors and the Family I GM 1.8 16v engine with 122 PS (90 kW; 120 hp). In 2006, the Stilo gained a GM sourced flexible engine capable of using petrol and ethanol (1.8 8v with 110 PS (81 kW; 108 hp) on petrol and 114 PS (84 kW; 112 hp) with ethanol) and

1118-461: The Stilo was launched in South America in 2003, being assembled in Brazil . The engines were the Family I GM engines 1.8 L with eight valves and 103 PS (76 kW; 102 hp) or 16 valves and 122 PS (90 kW; 120 hp), and a 2.4-liter, twenty valve five-cylinder version with 170 PS (125 kW; 168 hp) for the Abarth model as well. For export, the chosen engines were

1161-622: The car was developed by Abarth to compete in the single-make trophy called Trofeo Stilo Abarth , held in Italy from 2002 to 2005. The car was revealed in November 2001, at the Bologna Motor Show. It was derived from the Stilo 1.8 16v version, with the engine power increased from 133 bhp (99 kW; 135 PS) to 157 bhp (117 kW; 159 PS), and from the season of 2003 to 180 bhp (134 kW; 182 PS). A similar competition

1204-428: The crumple zones and the compatibility of the test car. The test car is driven into a rigid barrier with full overlap at a speed of 50 km/h (31 mph). A small 5th Percentile dummy is seated in the driving position and in the rear seat. The aim is to test the car's restraint system, such as airbags and seat belts . A deformable barrier is mounted on a trolley and is driven at 60 km/h (37 mph) into

1247-471: The higher is for the vehicle when equipped with certain options, often in the form of a safety pack. NCAP ratings are valid for a region. Some cars have less standard equipment as imported by other countries. Euro NCAP Advanced is a reward system launched in 2010 for advanced safety technologies, complementing Euro NCAP's existing star rating scheme. Euro NCAP rewards and recognises car manufacturers that make available new safety technologies which demonstrate

1290-410: The rear air vent. The Stilo was ultimately a sales disappointment. An extensive advertising campaign using Formula 1 star Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello did little to aid the car's sales. In October 2013, The Economist placed the Stilo into the report on Europe's Biggest Loss Making Cars . In 2004, the Stilo received a light facelift. The 1242 cc engine was dropped in favour of

1333-401: The side of the stationary test vehicle at a right angle. This is meant to represent another vehicle colliding with the side of a car. The car is propelled sideways at 32 km/h (20 mph) against a rigid, narrow pole at a small angle away from perpendicular to simulate a vehicle travelling sideways into roadside objects such as a tree or pole. The body in white (frame) of the vehicle

1376-418: The styling of the preceding Bravo and Brava had been criticised for being too "Italian". As with many of its European competitors, the five-door was less sporty than the coupé-like three-door bodystyle, with a higher roofline and a more upright appearance overall. Critics also attacked the car's excessive weight and its semi-independent rear torsion beam suspension / twist-beam rear suspension , however, this

1419-689: The vehicles in a variety of crash tests, including front, side and pole impacts, and impacts with pedestrians. Testing is not mandatory, with vehicle models either being independently chosen by Euro NCAP or sponsored by the manufacturers. In Europe, new cars are certified as legal for sale under the Whole Vehicle Type Approval regimen that differs from Euro NCAP. According to Euro NCAP, "The frontal and side impact crash tests used by Euro NCAP are based on those used in European legislation. However, much higher performance requirements are used by Euro NCAP." Euro NCAP also states that "legislation sets

1462-497: The version wasn't available in other markets anymore. For the MY2010, Fiat do Brasil launched a "basic features" version called Attractive , still with the 1.8 8v Flex engine. This version marks the confirmation that the new Bravo is coming, with the low-cost Stilo Attractive as the only version. In March 2010, Brazil's Justice Ministry fined Fiat three million Reais (US$ 1.7 million) for failing to recall its Stilo without ABS brakes to fix

1505-514: Was also an available option. For MY2006 in September 2005, the Stilo was updated with a new front grille, different seat fabric, a relocation of the electric mirror controls from the window control console to just behind the gear stick. The entry models also had the centre armrest removed (which when in the downward position prevented comfortable use of the handbrake as in the Audi A3 ) and the deletion of

1548-656: Was also seen as poor for its class, a result of the car's weight. Another point of criticism was the Selespeed gearbox fitted to the Abarth version: this was seen as too slow in its reactions and particularly inappropriate for this high powered version. Nevertheless, the car won praise for its high levels of grip (aided by the unusually wide tires) and its brakes. In the United Kingdom, different trim levels available were: Active, Active Aircon, Blue, Dynamic, Sporting, Abarth, GT, Prestigio, Xbox limited edition, Michael Schumacher, and

1591-413: Was available with the so called "Eco" pack which features changes to the car's aerodynamics and ECU, taller gear ratios and lower rolling resistance tyres. This gives better fuel consumption and lower CO 2 emissions (119 g/km) when compared to the standard car. This engine is also Euro 5 rated. A new 2.0 Multijet diesel was added to lineup at the end of 2008, that slowly replaced the 1.9 16v. In 2009,

1634-659: Was held in the United Kingdom from 2004 to 2005, called the Fiat Stilo Rally Cup. In September 2004, a junior team backed up by Fiat UK competed in the Wales Rally GB of the World Rally Championship with group A cars, and the following year two other cars took part in the rally. Stilo cars have also been present in the Andros Trophy during the last years. Only available in the five-door hatchback version,

1677-534: Was introduced car buyers had little information if one car was safer than the other; the UK at the time required only a 48 km/h (30 mph) frontal crash test. The first ratings of a group of best selling vehicles were released in 1997, since then Euro NCAP has tested more than 1,800 new cars, published over 600 ratings and has helped save upwards of 78,000 lives in Europe, and encouraged manufacturers to build safer cars. As

1720-466: Was powered by three different petrol and three diesel engines. 'T-Jet' is the name of the new range of turbocharged petrol engines. Some models of the 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) T-Jet version have a Sport button to give an "overboost" function. At the end of 2007, the new 1.6 L Multijet diesel engine was launched, and a more powerful 120 PS (88 kW; 118 hp) version in spring 2008. The 105 PS (77 kW; 104 hp) version

1763-546: Was the same system used by the market-leading Volkswagen Golf of the time. Some saw the torsion beam as a step backwards from the acclaimed fully- independent rear suspension used in the Bravo/Brava and Fiat Coupé . The Stilo was the second car worldwide to use the TRW Column-Drive Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPS) technology after the second generation Fiat Punto , later introduced on

1806-416: Was withdrawn from production soon afterwards. BMW 's 2007 Mini had its bonnet and headlamp fixture changed to meet the latest pedestrian safety requirements. In 2017, to celebrate Euro NCAP's 20th anniversary, they tested a 1997 Rover 100 and 2017 Honda Jazz under the same frontal offset conditions to demonstrate how far safety has come in Europe. A full test can take up to six weeks: The test car

1849-504: Was working on a station wagon version, speculated to be marketed as the Bravo MultiWagon . Despite being a production ready version of the Bravo, it was never marketed. Other sources also claimed that this was actually a facelifted of the second generation Fiat Croma , launched in October 2007. The Brazilian built Bravo went on sale in 2010 in Brazil. Its available with two engines and three trim levels (five trim levels since 2012),
