Vikna is a former municipality in Trøndelag county , Norway . The island municipality existed from 1869 until its dissolution in 2020. It is now part of Nærøysund Municipality in the Namdalen region . The administrative centre of the municipality was the village of Rørvik . Other villages in Vikna included Austafjord , Garstad , and Valøya .
22-450: At the time of its dissolution in 2020, the 319-square-kilometre (123 sq mi) municipality was the 269th largest by area out of the 422 municipalities in Norway. Vikna was the 216th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 4,578. The municipality's population density was 14.4 inhabitants per square kilometre (37/sq mi) and its population had increased by 11.4% over
44-502: A circle. The fish design has a tincture of argent which means it is commonly colored white, but if it is made out of metal, then silver is used. This design was chosen to symbolize the importance of salmon fishing and farming in the municipality. The arms were designed by Torleif Flosand. The municipal flag has the same design as the coat of arms. The Church of Norway had one parish ( sokn ) within Vikna Municipality. It
66-534: A common work area with nearly 10,000 inhabitants. Population density Population density (in agriculture : standing stock or plant density ) is a measurement of population per unit land area. It is mostly applied to humans , but sometimes to other living organisms too. It is a key geographical term. Population density is population divided by total land area , sometimes including seas and oceans, as appropriate. Low densities may cause an extinction vortex and further reduce fertility. This
88-569: A fast pace. Cities with high population densities are, by some, considered to be overpopulated, though this will depend on factors like quality of housing and infrastructure and access to resources. Very densely populated cities are mostly in Asia (particularly Southeast Asia ); Africa's Lagos , Kinshasa , and Cairo ; South America's Bogotá , Lima , and São Paulo ; and Mexico City and Saint Petersburg also fall into this category. City population and especially area are, however, heavily dependent on
110-538: A high urbanization level, with an economically specialized city population drawing also on rural resources outside the area, illustrating the difference between high population density and overpopulation . Deserts have very limited potential for growing crops as there is not enough rain to support them. Thus, their population density is generally low. However, some cities in the Middle East, such as Dubai , have been increasing in population and infrastructure growth at
132-404: A little less than the land area of Puerto Rico , 8,868 square kilometres (3,424 sq mi). Although the arithmetic density is the most common way of measuring population density, several other methods have been developed to provide alternative measures of population density over a specific area. Gjeslingene Lighthouse Gjeslingene Lighthouse ( Norwegian : Gjeslingene fyr )
154-706: Is a coastal lighthouse in Nærøysund Municipality in Trøndelag , Norway . It was established in 1877, was reinforced in 1961 and automated in 1987. Gjæslingan lighthouse stands on the islet of Haraldsøykråka in the island group Sør-Gjæslingan øya on the north side of the Foldafjord . The white building consists of a 24.3-metre (80 ft) high red iron tower on a stone base. The white light flashes once every ten seconds, and it can be seen for about 14 nautical miles (26 km; 16 mi). The lighthouse also emits
176-478: Is called the Allee effect after the scientist who identified it. Examples of the causes of reduced fertility in low population densities are: Population density is the number of people per unit of area, usually transcribed as "per square kilometer" or square mile, and which may include or exclude, for example, areas of water or glaciers. Commonly this is calculated for a county , city , country , another territory or
198-420: Is named "Vikna". It was named after the three large islands which made up the municipality: Inner-Vikna , Mellom-Vikna , and Ytter-Vikna ( Old Norse : Víkn ). The name is derived from the word vík which means " cove " or "wick" (likely since the islands have numerous coves and inlets). Historically, the name of the municipality was spelled Vikten . On 3 November 1917, a royal resolution changed
220-518: Is taken into account, then human population density is 53/km (140/sq mi). This includes all continental and island land area, including Antarctica . However, if Antarctica is excluded, then population density rises to over 58 per square kilometre (150/sq mi). The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) has developed a suite of (open and free) data and tools named the Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL) to improve
242-494: The entire world . The world's population is around 8,000,000,000 and the Earth 's total area (including land and water) is 510,000,000 km (200,000,000 sq mi). Therefore, the worldwide human population density is approximately 8,000,000,000 ÷ 510,000,000 = 16/km (41/sq mi). However, if only the Earth's land area of 150,000,000 km (58,000,000 sq mi)

Hurtigruten boats stop frequently at Rørvik and Norwegian County Road 770 via the Nærøysund Bridge connects Vikna to the mainland and European route E6 . There is also the small Rørvik Airport, Ryum , just south of Rørvik. Vikna and neighbouring Nærøy Municipality formed
286-504: The coastal steamer ( Hurtigruten ) Sanct Svithun run aground on Nordøyan as a result of navigational error. The ship sunk, and there was a tragic loss of 41 lives. A memorial bauta was raised on Nordøyan in 2002. While it existed, Vikna Municipality was responsible for primary education (through 10th grade), outpatient health services , senior citizen services, welfare and other social services , zoning , economic development , and municipal roads and utilities. The municipality
308-547: The definition of "urban area" used: densities are almost invariably higher for the center only than when suburban settlements and intervening rural areas are included, as in the agglomeration or metropolitan area (the latter sometimes including neighboring cities). In comparison, based on a world population of 8 billion, the world's inhabitants, if conceptualized as a loose crowd occupying just under 1 m (10 sq ft) per person (cf. Jacobs Method ), would occupy an area of 8,000 square kilometres (3,100 sq mi)
330-417: The historical composition of the council by political party . The mayor ( Norwegian : ordfører ) of Vikna was the political leader of the municipality and the chairperson of the municipal council. Here is a list of people who held this position: Fishing , fish farming , public services , and agriculture are the main sources of income. Initially, the population of Vikten Municipality was 1,749. On 1 January 1881, a small area of Fosnes Municipality (population: 61) was transferred to Vikten Municipality. The spelling of the name was later changed to Vikna Municipality. On 1 January 2018, the municipality switched from
374-410: The old Nord-Trøndelag county to the new Trøndelag county. On 1 January 2020, Vikna Municipality was merged with most of the neighboring Nærøy Municipality to form the new Nærøysund Municipality . The Lund area of Nærøy Municipality was not part of the merger, however, instead it became part of the newly enlarged Namsos Municipality on the same date. The municipality (originally the parish )
396-545: The science for policy support to the European Commission Directorate Generals and Services and as support to the United Nations system. Several of the most densely populated territories in the world are city-states , microstates and urban dependencies . In fact, 95% of the world's population is concentrated on just 10% of the world's land. These territories have a relatively small area and
418-413: The spelling of the name of the municipality to Vikna . The coat of arms was granted on 13 May 1988 and it was in use until 1 January 2020 when the municipality was dissolved. The official blazon is " Azure , three salmon argent in annulo " ( Norwegian : I blått tre sølv lakser som danner en sirkel ). This means the arms have a blue field (background) and the charge is three salmon forming

The highest point in the municipality was the 172.9-metre (567 ft) tall mountain Vattafjellet on the island of Ytter-Vikna . The main village for the municipality was Rørvik , located on the eastern shore of Inner-Vikna, facing the mainland across the Nærøysundet strait. The many islands in the area means that there are many lighthouses including Gjeslingene Lighthouse , Grinna Lighthouse , Nærøysund Lighthouse , and Nordøyan Lighthouse . On 21 October 1962,
462-532: Was governed by a municipal council of directly elected representatives. The mayor was indirectly elected by a vote of the municipal council. The municipality was under the jurisdiction of the Namdal District Court and the Frostating Court of Appeal .
