Roughly 80% of the Region's active population is employed in this industry, which makes up about 75% of

204-403: Is an open-air none recycled water hydroponics relationship. The below described circumstances are not in perspective, have limited duration, and have a tendency to accumulate trace materials in soil that either there or elsewhere cause deoxygenation. The use of vast amounts of fertilizer may have unintended consequences for the environment by devastating rivers, waterways, and river endings through

238-680: Is home to Maswa Game Reserve and has a total area of 4,210 square kilometers and is located in the Bariadi District near the Serengeti National Park's borders. Makao Wildlife Management Area has a total area of 1,330 square kilometers and is located in the Meatu District. Numerous animals inhabit these reserves, such as hippos , lion , zebras , buffalo , Wild Dogs , bushbuck , impala , giraffes , and baboons . Sukuma (nyantuzu), Nyiramba , Nyaturu , and Hadzabe (Tindiga), are

306-459: Is not arable according to the FAO definition above includes: Other non-arable land includes land that is not suitable for any agricultural use. Land that is not arable, in the sense of lacking capability or suitability for cultivation for crop production, has one or more limitations – a lack of sufficient freshwater for irrigation, stoniness, steepness, adverse climate, excessive wetness with

340-569: Is not included in this category. Data for 'Arable land' are not meant to indicate the amount of land that is potentially cultivable. A more concise definition appearing in the Eurostat glossary similarly refers to actual rather than potential uses: "land worked (ploughed or tilled) regularly, generally under a system of crop rotation ". In Britain, arable land has traditionally been contrasted with pasturable land such as heaths , which could be used for sheep-rearing but not as farmland . Arable land

374-434: Is the seawater greenhouse , which desalinates water through evaporation and condensation using solar energy as the only energy input. This technology is optimized to grow crops on desert land close to the sea. The use of artifices does not make the land arable. Rock still remains rock, and shallow – less than 6 feet (1.8 metres) – turnable soil is still not considered toilable. The use of artifice

In terms of money, the region's GDP in 2010 was estimated to be TZS 1,959,401 million, or around 6.07 percent of the national GDP. The Region also ranks among

442-416: Is unsuitable for cultivation, yet such land has value for grazing of livestock. In British Columbia, Canada, 41 percent of the provincial Agricultural Land Reserve area is unsuitable for the production of cultivated crops, but is suitable for uncultivated production of forage usable by grazing livestock. Similar examples can be found in many rangeland areas elsewhere. Land incapable of being cultivated for

476-547: Is vulnerable to land degradation and some types of un-arable land can be enriched to create useful land. Climate change and biodiversity loss , are driving pressure on arable land. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, in 2013, the world's arable land amounted to 1.407 billion hectares, out of a total of 4.924 billion hectares of land used for agriculture. Agricultural land that

510-682: The Komahola River, and one from the left the Maloho River. There is considerable farming in the lower reaches of the Simiyu Basin, which causes runoff of fertilizers and pesticides. The delta of the Simiyu is a marsh that starts just downstream from the town of Magu . Upstream from Magu just below the Ndagalu Forest Reserve is the village of Samilunga. In 1875, Henry Morton Stanley was

As one of the six main inlets to Lake Victoria, it forms part of

612-437: The accumulation of non-degradable toxins and nitrogen-bearing molecules that remove oxygen and cause non-aerobic processes to form. Examples of infertile non-arable land being turned into fertile arable land include: One of the impacts of land degradation is that it can diminish the natural capacity of the land to store and filter water leading to water scarcity . Human-induced land degradation and water scarcity are increasing

646-401: The amount of vegetation cover; 8,388,253 tree seedlings were raised during the 2011–12 fiscal year. Simiyu has a coastline and territorial waters on Lake Victoria. The Busega District on the shores of Lake Victoria, Lake Kitangiri in Meatu District, rivers, and dam reservoirs are the primary fishing locations in the Simiyu Region. Fishing in the rest of the region is only done for home use, with

748-520: The east. Significant soil erosion occurs in the area, which reduces agricultural production. The main economic activities are crop farming and animal husbandry, and the average annual rainfall is less than 700 mm with an irregular tendency. Sorghum, cotton, and maize are among the crops farmed in this region. The third zone, which includes the Maswa District , has ridged and undulating topography. Sukuma land soil catena, often referred to as "Mbuga,"

782-549: The economy of the region. Cotton , peanuts , and sunflower are the three main cash crops farmed. While maize , sorghum , paddy , sweet potatoes , millet , and cassava are the primary food crops. Simiyu Region has a total size of 23,807,700 hectares, or 23,807.7 square kilometers. 11,479,100 hectares are arable ground that is ideal for farming. 60% of the arable land is cultivated, or 6,942,378 hectares total. A total of 61,542 hectares of regional land are suitable for irrigation, however only 14,766 hectares (23.9%) of that land

816-611: The exception of the Victoria Lake shoreline in the Busega District. To name a few of the common freshwater fish, there is Nile perch , tilapia , and sardine . At Zanzui Dam in Maswa District, there are efforts made to increase fish productivity by breeding fingerlings, mostly for Tilapia species. For home fish farming , the produced fingerlings are stocked into dam reservoirs and ponds. Vegetable oil mills and ginneries make up

850-499: The first European to sight the Simiyu River. There are two rainy seasons, the light one from November into January, and the heavy one from March to May, which result in 700 to 1000 mm of annual rainfall. Less than 10% of the rainfall makes it to the mouth of the river due to a very high evapotranspiration rate. Average monthly flow of Simiyu measured at the hydrological station in Magu Mjini Estate, about 10 km above

884-405: The impracticality of drainage, excessive salts, or a combination of these, among others. Although such limitations may preclude cultivation, and some will in some cases preclude any agricultural use, large areas unsuitable for cultivation may still be agriculturally productive. For example, United States NRCS statistics indicate that about 59 percent of US non-federal pasture and unforested rangeland

918-554: The major indigenous ethnic groupings. The Sukuma may be found practically everywhere, whereas the Nyaturu and Nyiramba are primarily found in the Maswa and Meatu Districts and the Hadzabe (Tindiga) and Nyaturu in the Meatu District, respectively. According to the 2012 national census, the region had a population of 1,584,157. For 2002–2012, the region's 1.8 percent average annual population growth rate

Even though Lake Victoria borders the region's northern portion, it lacks access to marine transportation, with Mwanza serving as

986-732: The mouth in m³ / s (1999–2004). The Simiyu flows stimulate time-dependent, like most rivers in the region. Arable land Arable land (from the Latin : arabilis , "able to be ploughed ") is any land capable of being ploughed and used to grow crops. Alternatively, for the purposes of agricultural statistics, the term often has a more precise definition: Arable land is the land under temporary agricultural crops (multiple-cropped areas are counted only once), temporary meadows for mowing or pasture , land under market and kitchen gardens and land temporarily fallow (less than five years). The abandoned land resulting from shifting cultivation

1020-402: The production of crops can sometimes be converted to arable land. New arable land makes more food and can reduce starvation . This outcome also makes a country more self-sufficient and politically independent, because food importation is reduced. Making non-arable land arable often involves digging new irrigation canals and new wells, aqueducts, desalination plants, planting trees for shade in

1054-459: The region. Zone One includes Bariadi District , which has an undulating landscape dominated by clay soil and top soils with a light texture. Rainfall amounts range between 700 and 900 mm. Crop cultivation, with a focus on maize , sorghum , cotton , and cassava , as well as livestock rearing, are the main economic activities. The Meatu District is covered by zone two, which has gently sloping topography and fertile clay loamy soils towards
