Nærøy ( Urban East Norwegian: [ˈnæ̂ːrœʏ] ) is a former municipality of Trøndelag county , Norway . The municipality existed from 1838 until its dissolution in 2020. It is now part of Nærøysund Municipality in the Namdalen region . Norway's smallest town , Kolvereid , was the administrative centre of the municipality. Some villages in Nærøy Municipality included Abelvær , Foldereid , Gravvika , Lund , Ottersøya , Salsbruket , Steine , and Torstad .
21-446: At the time of its dissolution in 2020, the 1,068-square-kilometre (412 sq mi) municipality was the 96th largest by area out of the 422 municipalities in Norway. Nærøy was the 200th most populous municipality in Norway with a population of 5,072. The municipality's population density was 4.8 inhabitants per square kilometre (12/sq mi) and its population had increased by 2% over
42-561: A little less than the land area of Puerto Rico , 8,868 square kilometres (3,424 sq mi). Although the arithmetic density is the most common way of measuring population density, several other methods have been developed to provide alternative measures of population density over a specific area. Kvingra Kvingra is an island (and former peninsula ) in Nærøysund Municipality in Trøndelag county, Norway . Kvingra
63-447: A measurement of population per unit land area. It is mostly applied to humans , but sometimes to other living organisms too. It is a key geographical term. Population density is population divided by total land area , sometimes including seas and oceans, as appropriate. Low densities may cause an extinction vortex and further reduce fertility. This is called the Allee effect after
84-499: Is 53/km (140/sq mi). This includes all continental and island land area, including Antarctica . However, if Antarctica is excluded, then population density rises to over 58 per square kilometre (150/sq mi). The European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) has developed a suite of (open and free) data and tools named the Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL) to improve the science for policy support to
105-499: Is around 8,000,000,000 and the Earth 's total area (including land and water) is 510,000,000 km (200,000,000 sq mi). Therefore, the worldwide human population density is approximately 8,000,000,000 ÷ 510,000,000 = 16/km (41/sq mi). However, if only the Earth's land area of 150,000,000 km (58,000,000 sq mi) is taken into account, then human population density
126-613: Is surrounded by the Sørsalten fjord to the south, the Nærøysundet strait in the northwest, and the Nordsalten fjord in the northeast. The island was originally connected to the mainland on a tiny isthmus of land in the southeast, but there is a man-made canal through it, so the peninsula now is technically an island. The 54-square-kilometre (21 sq mi) island has a population of about 400 (as of 2001). The largest population center on
147-458: Is used. The charge is three conjoined fleur-de-lis aligned in a Y-shaped design. The fleur-de-lis design is red to symbolize the local water lilies which generally have a reddish color. The arms are also based on the seal of King Håkon Magnusson from 1344, on a document in which the King granted several rights to the local farmers. The seal shows St. Mary in a portal decorated with fleur-de-lis ,
168-631: The European Commission Directorate Generals and Services and as support to the United Nations system. Several of the most densely populated territories in the world are city-states , microstates and urban dependencies . In fact, 95% of the world's population is concentrated on just 10% of the world's land. These territories have a relatively small area and a high urbanization level, with an economically specialized city population drawing also on rural resources outside
189-458: The 1960s, there were many municipal mergers across Norway due to the work of the Schei Committee . On 1 January 1964, a large merger took place. The following areas were merged to form a new, larger Nærøy Municipality: On 1 January 2018, Nærøy Municipality switched from the old Nord-Trøndelag county to the new Trøndelag county. On 1 January 2020, most of Nærøy Municipality was merged with
210-988: The area, illustrating the difference between high population density and overpopulation . Deserts have very limited potential for growing crops as there is not enough rain to support them. Thus, their population density is generally low. However, some cities in the Middle East, such as Dubai , have been increasing in population and infrastructure growth at a fast pace. Cities with high population densities are, by some, considered to be overpopulated, though this will depend on factors like quality of housing and infrastructure and access to resources. Very densely populated cities are mostly in Asia (particularly Southeast Asia ); Africa's Lagos , Kinshasa , and Cairo ; South America's Bogotá , Lima , and São Paulo ; and Mexico City and Saint Petersburg also fall into this category. City population and especially area are, however, heavily dependent on
231-547: The definition of "urban area" used: densities are almost invariably higher for the center only than when suburban settlements and intervening rural areas are included, as in the agglomeration or metropolitan area (the latter sometimes including neighboring cities). In comparison, based on a world population of 8 billion, the world's inhabitants, if conceptualized as a loose crowd occupying just under 1 m (10 sq ft) per person (cf. Jacobs Method ), would occupy an area of 8,000 square kilometres (3,100 sq mi)

#1733318203777252-461: The first element is uncertain. It is maybe the stem form of the name of the Norse god Njord (but it is suspicious that it is not in the genitive case ). The last element is øy which means " island ". Historically, the name of the municipality was spelled Nærøen or Nærø . On 3 November 1917, a royal resolution changed the spelling of the name of the municipality to Nærøy . The coat of arms
273-407: The historical composition of the council by political party . The mayor ( Norwegian : ordfører ) of Nærøy was the political leader of the municipality and the chairperson of the municipal council. Here is a list of people who held this position: Norwegian County Road 17 crossed the northeastern part of the municipality. There was a large network of bridges in the municipality that connected
294-458: The islands and crossed the fjords. Most notably was the Marøysund Bridge and Nærøysund Bridge which connected Nærøy Municipality to Vikna Municipality to the west. Also Hestøy Bridge and Smines Bridge connected the village of Lund to Fosnes Municipality to the south. Population density Population density (in agriculture : standing stock or plant density ) is
315-733: The islands of Austra and Gjerdinga and the Kvingra peninsula. Several large lakes were located in the municipality including Mjosundvatnet , Salvatnet , and Storvatnet . The highest point in the municipality was the 873.58-metre (2,866.1 ft) tall mountain Fuglstadfjellet on the border with Bindal Municipality to the north. While it existed, Nærøy Municipality was responsible for primary education (through 10th grade), outpatient health services , senior citizen services, welfare and other social services , zoning , economic development , and municipal roads and utilities. The municipality
336-528: The neighboring Vikna Municipality to form the new Nærøysund Municipality . The Lund area in Nærøy Municipality was not part of the merger, however, instead it became part of the newly enlarged Namsos Municipality on the same date. The municipality (originally the parish ) is named after the island of Nærøya ( Old Norse : Njarðøy ) since the Old Nærøy Church was built there. The meaning of
357-403: The previous decade. Nærøy was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt law). On 1 July 1869, the western island district was separated from Nærøy Municipality to become the new Vikten Municipality . This left Nærøy Municipality with 1,477 residents. On 1 January 1902, an unpopulated area of Kolvereid Municipality was transferred to Nærøy Municipality. During
378-443: The scientist who identified it. Examples of the causes of reduced fertility in low population densities are: Population density is the number of people per unit of area, usually transcribed as "per square kilometer" or square mile, and which may include or exclude, for example, areas of water or glaciers. Commonly this is calculated for a county , city , country , another territory or the entire world . The world's population
399-551: The symbol of St. Mary. The arms were designed by Einar H. Skjervold. The municipal flag has the same design as the coat of arms. The Church of Norway had four parishes ( sokn ) within Nærøy Municipality. It is part of the Namdal prosti ( deanery ) in the Diocese of Nidaros . The municipality was located in the northwestern part of Trøndelag county, along the Foldafjord . It included
420-532: Was governed by a municipal council of directly elected representatives. The mayor was indirectly elected by a vote of the municipal council. The municipality was under the jurisdiction of the Namdal District Court and the Frostating Court of Appeal . The municipal council ( Kommunestyre ) of Nærøy was made up of 27 representatives that are elected to four year terms. The tables below show
441-423: Was granted on 22 May 1987 and they were in use until 1 January 2020 when the municipality was dissolved. The official blazon is " Or , three fleur-de-lis in pall stems conjoined gules " ( Norwegian : I gull tre røde liljetopper forent i trepass ). This means the arms have a field (background) that has a tincture of Or which means it is commonly colored yellow, but if it is made out of metal, then gold
