However, it can also be a method used to disguise intent, as is the case with illegal logging , smuggling , or grey-market goods. The transshipment of containers at a container port or terminal can be defined as the number (or proportion) of containers, possibly expressed in TEU , of the total container flow that

West End Airport remained the main commercial airport for Grand Bahama until overshadowed by the newer airport at Freeport in the 1960s. The major settlement that developed on the island was Freeport- Lucaya , but other hamlets and settlements emerged, including Russell Town, Williams Town, Smith's Point, Mather Town, Pinder's Point, Lewis Yard, Hunter's, and Mack Town. 320-463: A year than does a tropical savanna climate. This climate has the driest month, which nearly always occurs at or soon after the winter solstice. There are generally two versions of a tropical monsoon climate: Tropical monsoon are most commonly found in Africa ( West and Central Africa ), Asia ( South and Southeast Asia ), South America and Central America . This climate also occurs in sections of

352-598: Is a tropical climate subtype that corresponds to the Köppen climate classification category Am . Tropical monsoon climates have monthly mean temperatures above 18 °C (64 °F) in every month of the year and a dry season. The tropical monsoon climate is the intermediate climate between the wet Af (or tropical rainforest climate ) and the drier Aw (or tropical savanna climate ). The casuarina is common along the islands' shorelines, due to its salt-tolerance and ability to thrive in sandy soils. Tropical monsoon climate An area of tropical monsoon climate (occasionally known as a sub-equatorial , tropical wet climate or a tropical monsoon and trade-wind littoral climate )

416-557: Is counted twice in the port performance, since it is handled twice by the waterside container cranes (separate unloading from arriving ship A, waiting in the stack, and loading onto departing ship B). Transshipment at sea is done by transferring goods from one ship to another. In global fisheries transshipment is used to transfer catch to refrigerated cargo vessels that also supply fishing vessels with fuel, food, equipment and personnel allowing them to stay at sea for months or even years. This guarantees that fish quickly find their way to

448-576: Is from May to October. The hurricane season runs from June through November, with the greatest risk in the months of August, September, and October. The Indigenous Lucayan people 's name for the island was Bahama ('large upper middle island'). Grand Bahama's existence for almost two centuries was largely governed by the nature of the treacherous coral reefs surrounding the island, which repelled its Spanish claimants (who largely left it alone apart from infrequent en route stops by ships for provisions) while attracting pirates, who would lure ships onto

480-414: Is handled at the port or terminal and, after temporary storage in the stack, transferred to another ship to reach their destinations. The exact definition of transshipment may differ between ports, mostly depending on the inclusion of inland water transport (barges operating on canals and rivers to the hinterland ). The definition of transshipment may: In both cases, a single, unique, transshipped container

512-614: Is prevalent. The change in direction is due to the difference in the way water and land heat. Changing pressure patterns that affect the seasonality of precipitation also occur in Africa, though it generally differs from the way it operates in Asia. During the high-sun season, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) induces rain. During the low-sun season, the subtropical high creates dry conditions. The monsoon climates of Africa, and

544-406: Is usually found in dark caves or abandoned homes. The Bahama woodstar is a non-migratory hummingbird found in brushy habitats, including forest and undergrowth, areas of low-growing, and scrubby vegetation. The Bahama swallow is a medium-sized bird native to The Bahamas. This endangered bird breeds in the islands' pine woodland , but is threatened due to human development . This swallow has

576-485: The Caribbean , North America , and northern Australia . The major controlling factor over a tropical monsoon climate is its relationship to the monsoon circulation. The monsoon is a seasonal change in wind direction. In Asia, during the summer (or high-sun season) there is an onshore flow of air (air moving from ocean toward land). In the “winter” (or low-sun season) an offshore air flow (air moving from land toward water)

704-422: The ambitious Edward St. George, with the financial help of Sir Jack Hayward , took the company to new frontiers. Seeing the success of Cuba as a tourist destination for wealthy Americans, St. George was eager to develop Grand Bahama in a similar vein. The city grew rapidly, with St. George adding a harbour, an airport soon after the city was founded, and the tourist center of Port Lucaya in 1962. Grand Bahama became

736-581: The bulk of this activity. Grand Bahama's tourism sector is complemented by the BORCO oil bunkering facility owned by Buckeye , the South Riding Point oil storage and transhipment terminal owned by Statoil , and a transshipment / container port partly owned by Hong Kong conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa and the Grand Bahama Port Authority. There are also quarrying operations on the island and

768-477: The economy. They produce agriculture ranging from crops , poultry , livestock , to dairy . On commercial farms in Grand Bahama, vegetable and citrus production are produced and exported to other countries. For their fisheries, Crayfish and conch are their top exports. 832-406: The journey (e.g., from ship transport to road transport ), known as transloading . Another reason is to combine small shipments into a large shipment (consolidation), or the opposite: dividing a large shipment into smaller shipments (deconsolidation). Transshipment usually takes place in transport hubs . Much international transshipment also takes place in designated customs areas , thus avoiding

864-413: The market without a decrease in quality. Since transshipment at sea encounters often happen on the high seas, in regions with poor regulation and oversight, they are also used to disguise criminal activities such as illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing , forced labor , human trafficking and drug smuggling . Several states and regional fishery management organizations have therefore prohibited

896-613: The mid-20th century, Grand Bahama's population numbered around 500 and the island was one of the least developed of The Bahamas' islands. However it finally gained a stable source of income when in 1955 a Virginian financier named Wallace Groves began redevelopment with the Bahamian government to build the city of Freeport under the Hawksbill Creek Agreement and create the Grand Bahama Port Authority . Soon after,

928-402: The need for customs checks or duties, otherwise a major hindrance for efficient transport. An item handled (from the shipper's point of view) as a single movement is not generally considered transshipped, even if it changes from one mode of transport to another at several points. Previously, it was often not distinguished from transloading , since each leg of such a trip was typically handled by

960-429: The practice for certain vessel types or issued a complete ban within their zone of jurisdiction. Transshipment at sea also occurs in the export of bulk products. Choosing to transship reduces capital costs for port developers and can overcome problems arising from limited access to deep water. Loading barges typically specify 4 to 7 meters of draft. Since at least 2011, transshipment has been used in northern Australia in

992-458: The reefs where they would run aground and be plundered. The Spaniards took little interest in the island after enslaving the native Lucayan inhabitants.
