Kyūshū ( 九州 , Kyūshū , pronounced [kʲɯꜜːɕɯː] , lit. 'Nine Provinces ') is the third-largest island of Japan 's four main islands and the most southerly of the four largest islands (i.e. excluding Okinawa and the other Ryukyu ( Nansei ) Islands ).
