The town with a population of 13,000 is situated on the northern shore of Lake Balaton . It is considered to be the capital of the Northern lake shore and is a yachting destination. It is also a location for fishing (carp being the most common catch) although the introduction of eels and other non-indigenous species has caused ecological damage in recent years.

It has modern hotels and guest-houses to accommodate about fifty thousand visitors in the summer. The race, known as the Central Europe Rally, was rescheduled and relocated race by the Amaury Sport Organisation , which postponed and relocated the original Lisbon-Dakar race to an all-central Europe race over terrorist attacks. 46°57′N 17°53′E / 46.950°N 17.883°E / 46.950; 17.883 Mineral water Mineral water

Balatonfüred has a number of conference halls and a large clinic for heart patients. It also has a number of wine cellars that sell white house wine from the vineyards on the hillside overlooking the town and the lake. In winter, the lake may freeze over for weeks so that skaters and ice boaters take over near

The town has a local TV studio and a monthly newspaper. Füred has a newly built conference and sport centre as well. There are three churches in the town: a typical red-sandstone Catholic church, a white Protestant church and
95-490: Is hazardous and sometimes deadly . It is a gas, and it usually enters the body when it is breathed in. The quantities ingested in drinking water are much lower and are not considered likely to cause harm, but few studies on long-term, low-level exposure have been done, as of 2003 . The water of mineral springs is sometimes claimed to have therapeutic value. Mineral spas are resorts that have developed around mineral springs, where (often wealthy) patrons would repair to "take

Traditionally, mineral waters were used or consumed at their spring sources, often referred to as "taking the waters" or "taking the cure," at places such as spas , baths and wells . Today, it is far more common for mineral water to be bottled at
133-517: Is bottled at the source and has undergone no or minimal treatment. Permitted is the removal of iron , manganese , sulfur and arsenic through decantation , filtration or treatment with ozone -enriched air, insofar as this treatment does not alter the composition of the water as regards to the essential constituents which give it its properties. No additions are permitted except for carbon dioxide , which may be added, removed or re-introduced by exclusively physical methods. No disinfection treatment
152-533: Is permitted, nor is the addition of any bacteriostatic agents . A review by the World Health Organization found slightly reduced cardiovascular disease mortality from consuming harder water with higher mineral amounts, with magnesium and possibly calcium being the most likely contributors. However, mineral amounts vary greatly among different brands of mineral water, and tap water can contain similar or greater amounts of minerals. One study found that

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration classifies mineral water as water containing at least 250 parts per million total dissolved solids (TDS), originating from a geologically and physically protected underground water source. No minerals may be added to this water. In the European Union , bottled water may be called mineral water when it
190-439: The best-known healing agents in Balatonfüred since the 17th century. The town was officially declared a spa in 1772. The Kossuth Spring and other springs near the hospital supply water containing free and bound carbon dioxide as well as iron , magnesium , potassium , hydrocarbonate , calcium , sodium , sulfur and other minerals. The temperature of the spring waters is 14 to 15 °C (57 to 59 °F) they are collected into

In cold mineral springs, the rapid precipitation of minerals results from

Spectacular formations, including terraces, stalactites , stalagmites and 'frozen waterfalls' can result (see, for example, Mammoth Hot Springs ). The hospital is built on the lake shore and is flanked by the Tagore promenade, named after the Nobel-laureate Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore , who was treated here. Many other patients come here to heal and recuperate year-round thanks to the carbonated springs and baths, which are one of

Travelling to the mineral water site for direct access to the water is now uncommon, and in many cases not possible because of exclusive commercial ownership rights. More than 4,000 brands of mineral water are commercially available worldwide. In many places the term "mineral water" is colloquially used to mean any bottled carbonated water or soda water , as opposed to tap water . The more calcium and magnesium ions that are dissolved in water,

The dissolved minerals may alter the water's taste. Mineral water obtained from mineral springs, and the precipitated salts such as Epsom salt have long been important commercial products. Some mineral springs may contain significant amounts of harmful dissolved minerals, such as arsenic , and should not be drunk. Sulfur springs smell of rotten eggs due to hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), which

Historical mineral springs were often outfitted with elaborate stone-works — including artificial pools, retaining walls , colonnades , and roofs — sometimes in the form of fanciful "Greek temples", gazebos , or pagodas . Others were entirely enclosed within spring houses . For many centuries, in Europe, North America, and elsewhere, commercial proponents of mineral springs classified them according to
