It is bounded by (from the west and clockwise) the districts Kyffhäuserkreis ( Thuringia ), Mansfeld-Südharz , Salzlandkreis , Anhalt-Bitterfeld , Nordsachsen , Leipzig (both Saxony ) and Burgenlandkreis . The district-free city of Halle is surrounded by the Saalekreis.
