Transilien Line U , also known as "La Défense - La Verrière" or more often simply "ligne U", is a tangential commuter train link, which serves the western Paris region from La Défense. It links the Paris's business district of La Défense to La Verrière station, in the south-west of Ile-de-France. It is one of the two commuter train lines in the Transilien network that does not originate from a large Parisian station, along with the V . The line has 55,000 passengers per weekday in 2014.
39-454: On August 2, 1839, the current section linking La Défense to the Viroflay connection was put into service as part of the line from Paris-Saint-Lazare to Versailles-Rive-Droite. The latter is the second created in Île-de-France after the line from Paris-Saint-Lazare to Saint-Germain-en-Laye. It makes it possible to link Paris to Versailles in a shorter time, to bring many visitors to the castle, which
78-505: A multiple unit trainsets. Electric multiple unit trainsets offers a major advantage: the motors can be distributed across the entire train, instead of being concentrated in a locomotive. This improves traction and therefore accelerations which is useful on suburban commuter rail systems with frequent stops, like the RER. The Z 5600 was SNCF's first venture into creating a double-deck electric multiple unit trainset. The equipment would be based on
117-468: A washing machine, a pit tower and a preparation site for cleaning and small maintenance operations. At the start of 2017, according to SNCF estimates, the number of passengers going up daily in the line's stations was 52,000 on a basic working day (Tuesday or Thursday), 16,000 on Saturday and 10,000 on Sunday. SNCF Class Z 8800 The SNCF Class Z 8800 is a double-deck , dual-voltage electric multiple unit trainset that are operated by SNCF on
156-407: Is a train every quarter of an hour during rush hour. On Sundays, from 6.30 a.m. to 11 a.m. and every day from 8.30 p.m. to approximately 1 a.m., the offer is one train per hour. The rest of the time, i.e. 5:30 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday, 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. 30 on Sunday, a train every half hour is offered. All
195-411: Is at the end of its restoration, and to bring economic development to the region. The line is the result of the project of a bridge and road engineer, Desfontaines. He had proposed to join the line of Versailles right bank to that of Saint-Germain, which limited the costly expropriations, and also restricted the ramp to a value of 5 mm / m, at the cost of a slightly longer route. On July 12, 1849,
234-406: Is electrified in 1.5 kV DC to Le Mans, included. A separation section is located on the Viroflay connection. The authorized speed limits, in 2011/2012, for suburban trains, on direct tracks are indicated below. PK is "Point Kilométrique" (kilometer point) Major stations: The eastern terminus of the line, La Défense station offers a connection with metro line 1, RER A, tram line T2 and line L of
273-432: Is equipped with three tracks (two electrified and one non-electrified) with an inspection pit, one of which has a switchable 1,500/25,000 volts catenary. Elevating cradles allow work at height. It also takes care of the maintenance of the twenty Z 5600 6 cars trainsets “Evolys” ,on line C of the RER and around sixty Corail cars. It also provides level 3 maintenance of TER 2N Center and Normandy. In addition, it has nearby
312-551: Is operated by SNCF on line C of the Réseau Express Régional (RER), a hybrid suburban commuter and rapid transit system serving Paris and its Île-de-France suburbs and the TER Bourgogne-Franche-Comté regional rail system. The 52 trainsets were built by a consortium of CIMT [ fr ] , TCF, and TCO between 1982 and 1985. The Z 5600 trainsets proved extremely successful and became
351-558: Is to serve the Center for New Industries and Technologies or CNIT, but this stop is then considered temporary and is only open during events. The final station was only opened in 1968 with the aim of serving the business district which has been booming since the early 1960s. Line U connects La Défense station on the Saint-Lazare network to La Verrière station on the Montparnasse network. It is
390-449: The Class Z 20500 trainsets. These extra cars allowed these trainsets to carry additional passengers but did create some operating issues: the extra weight caused some reliability problems with the power cars and slowed rate of acceleration. In 2001, the sets were changed up again, with the Z 20500 trailer cars removed (and placed back into other Z 20500 trainsets), and VB2N trailers inserted into
429-491: The Réseau Express Régional (RER), a hybrid suburban commuter and rapid transit system and the Transilien , a suburban commuter rail system, both serving Paris and its Île-de-France suburbs. The 58 trainsets were built by a consortium of ANF , CIMT [ fr ] , and TCO between 1985 and 1988 While the Z 5600s had only 1.5 kV DC, SNCF ordered a second series of dual-current 1.5 kV DC / 25 kV AC trainsets for

#1733084536732468-632: The Ardoines workshop to provide service to line C of the Paris RER in 1985. Originally intended for the VMI, some of them however began their career, on line D of the RER, between 1987 and 1988 on the Châtelet - Villiers-le-Bel section. From the opening of the VMI in 1988, they will in reality serve all branches of the RER C, with the exception of the circular service Versailles-Chantiers / Versailles-Rive-Gauche. Since 1996,
507-579: The Les Ardoines (RER C) and Trappes (Transilien U) SNCF depots. As shown below, they are formed with two motored cars and two non-powered (trailer) cars (2M2T). The fleet of 57 trainsets is managed by two technical fleet supervisions, "supervisions techniques de flotte"(STF): The Z 8895 was a prototype of a two-current model with asynchronous motors supplied by thyristor current inverters (1,400 kW, April 1985, returned to type in June 1988). Since September 2010,

More rarely, they could also be on the Transilien Paris-Est network by providing MICI missions to Meaux. Most of the Z 8800 trains are assigned to the Ardoines workshop on line C of the RER network, but can be seen on all Transilien networks in Île-de-France with
585-745: The Transilien Paris Saint-Lazare network. In the future, the tangential line U will correspond with the western extension of the RER E (Éole), to Mantes-la-Jolie, from its current terminus of Haussmann - Saint-Lazare. Line E of the RER will pass through La Défense. At the center of a seven-branch railway star, the station offers a connection with the RER C, the Transilien line N, and the TER Center-Val de Loire and TER Basse-Normandie services. The Main Lines network serves Versailles-Chantiers station with
624-515: The VB2N and SNCF placed an order for trainsets to be built by a consortium of CIMT, TCF, and TCO between 1982 and 1985. The ZR trailer cars, which had no motors or electrical equipment, were built and delivered faster than the more complex power cars. In order to take advantage of the equipment as quickly as possible, SNCF operated the trailer cars between a pair of Class BB 8500 electric locomotives. These unique trainsets were used from 1982 until 1984 in
663-464: The Viroflay connection which was, at this time, occasionally open to commercial traffic, in order to connect the extreme terminals in 43 minutes. In addition, during the week, the line provides 89 daily departures. It does not work during the special night service set up on the occasion of important events such as the Music Festival and New Year's Eve, between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. A study, published in
702-469: The Z 5600 trainsets and they are only used as backup equipment on the R line. As of 1 January 2022 , 57 Z8800 trainsets are based at the Les Ardoines (RER C) and Villeneuve (Transilien R) SNCF depots. There are 22 four-car trainsets (17C–31C, 36C–38C, 40C, 42C–43C, 49C) on the RER C. As shown below, they are formed with two motored cars and two non-powered (trailer) cars (2M2T). There are 30 six-car trainsets (1C–15C, 32C–35C, 39C, 41C, 44C–52C) on
741-432: The Z 5600s, creating a total of 20 six-car trainsets. The Z 5600 trainsets received a renovation between 2009 and 2016. During the renovation process, folding seats and interior partitions were removed, seats were replaced, the former first-class areas were reconfigured to use 3 + 2 seating, and onboard passenger information and video surveillance systems were installed. But the Z 5600 did not receive air conditioning during
780-455: The Z 8800 trainsets in Transilien livery, which have not been fitted with the on-board passenger information system or video surveillance, have left for the workshops in Nevers to receive them. As of 11 February 2018 trainsets 10 B, 06 B, 02 B, 16 B, 15 B and 08 B have received this equipment. SNCF Class Z 5600 The SNCF Class Z 5600 is a double-deck electric multiple unit trainset that
819-469: The Z 8800s have been gradually renovated at the Nevers workshops: installation of interior equipment, such as anti-laceration seats with incorporated footrests, similar to the VB 2N Transilien, the on-board passenger information system (SIVE), video surveillance and endowment of a livery almost identical to that of the last Z 20900. The renovation also consists of removing the folding seats, the interior partitions of

The removal of the first class seats slightly increases the capacity of the trainsets: configuration 3 + 2 instead of 2 + 2. Unlike previous renovations (RIO, VB 2N), the Z 8800 will not receive air conditioning. The slight improvement made has also provoked the anger of user associations. The first renovated train (15 B) has been running since autumn 2010 and
897-493: The basis for the Z 2N series of trainsets, which were continuously improved over several generations. The Z 2N series was also the basis of the later MI 2N family of double-deck, dual power trainsets. After the SNCF's successful introduction of the VB2N double-deck locomotive-hauled trainsets, the railway wanted to extend the concept of two-level to self-propelled equipment, also known as
936-409: The basis for the Z 2N family of trainsets, which were continuously improved over several generations. The Z 2N family was also the basis of the later MI 2N family of double-deck, dual power trainsets. In the early 1990s, some of the Z 5600 trainsets were expanded from four cars (two power cars and two trailers) to six cars with the addition of two extra trailer cars that were purchased in the order of

Since December 14, 2014, the U line offer has been organized as indicated below, for each direction. From Monday to Friday, from 6.30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 4.30 p.m. to 8 p.m., there
1014-578: The exception of the North and South-East suburbs. Since the opening of the Trappes workshop in 2006, eighteen trains have been assigned to it. In 2016, the Z 8800s can perform any RER C mission, all line U missions (La Défense - La Verrière) and some line N missions (Paris-Montparnasse - Sèvres-Rive-Gauche in duet with VB2N trains, in rush hour and Paris-Montparnasse - Rambouillet in the evening). RER C trainsets (with the exception of the 20 B train which has been renovated in Transilien livery) will receive the Carmillon livery and different interior colors from the trains in Transilien livery. The first to receive it is the 45 B and the last is the 56 B, returned in March 2017. Since the start of 2017,
1131-449: The newspaper 20 minutes presented this link as the penultimate of Île-de-France in terms of respect for timetables, because it is a transverse link directly influenced by traffic from Montparnasse and Saint-Lazare networks and to be part of saturated traffic between La Défense and Saint-Cloud, and between Versailles-Chantiers and Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines. The mission codes for line U of the Transilien consist of four letters. By appearing on
1170-534: The opening of the La Défense - La Verrière line ( Line U ) has given them the opportunity, with the Z 20500s, to travel to the Transilien Paris Saint-Lazare network. Finally, due to the renovation of the VB 2N trainsets since 2003, some suburban trains to Dreux, Plaisir - Grignon and Mantes-la-Jolie are operated by Z 8800s.Some Z 5300 failures lead to the use of Z 8800s for carry out Paris-Montparnasse - Rambouillet connections. The Z 8800s were also likely to be engaged on

1287-457: The result of the combined use of the following railway lines: The line is divided into two parts for the power supply, a situation which stems from the history of the electrification of the national rail network and which requires the use of dual-current equipment. The line from Paris-Saint-Lazare to Versailles-Rive Droite, like the entire Paris-Saint-Lazare network, is electrified at 25 kV AC single-phase. The line from Paris-Montparnasse to Brest
1326-469: The section between the Viroflay connection and La Verrière station was opened in turn, as part of the line from Paris-Montparnasse to Brest. In July 1852, the lines from Paris-Saint-Lazare to Versailles-Rive-Droite and from Paris-Montparnasse to Brest were linked together through the Viroflay connection.
