The Toyota TF105 was a Formula One car for the 2005 Formula One season . The chassis was designed by Mike Gascoyne and Nicolò Petrucci with the engine being designed by Luca Marmorini . The year was statistically the team's most successful, with 88 points, five podium positions, and the fastest lap. The low-point was the withdrawal of the team from the 2005 United States Grand Prix , due to Michelin tyre safety concerns, as Ralf Schumacher 's left front tyre deflated on Indianapolis's famous last corner in Friday practice and Schumacher crashed into the wall and had to be taken to hospital. Ricardo Zonta replaced him, but neither of the Toyotas started the race. The team eventually finished fourth in the Constructors' Championship, their best ever championship placing.

47-539: This would become Toyota's best Formula 1 competitor in their history. Work began on the design and manufacture of the TF105 shortly before the end of the 2004 season , as work had to be done on the engine to make sure that it would safely endure two race meetings, which was a requirement in the FIA regulations for 2005. Many elements of the car were entirely new. The car's design was supervised by Technical Director Mike Gascoyne , and

94-561: A V10, but as a turbo-diesel . A variant of the Volkswagen Phaeton was the first production sedan to contain a V10 of any kind. Examples of petrol V10 production engines include: One of the first known V10 engines designed for motor racing was a 3.5 L (214 cu in) prototype Formula One engine built by Alfa Romeo in 1986. Originally intended for the Ligier Formula One team, this partnership collapsed without

141-488: A V8 would produce insufficient power and a V12 would be too complicated or bulky. V10s have been used in select luxury cars, sports cars and commercial vehicles. An early V10 petrol engine was used in the 1987 Lamborghini P140 , however this prototype sports car did not reach production. Dodge developed an early V10, originally designing a version of its LA series small block for use in trucks. The Dodge engine saw its first production use in substantially revised form in

188-557: A further change to the rules, V10s were banned for the 2006 season onwards in favor of 2.4 L V8s. In sports car racing, the first V10 engine was used by the Peugeot 905 in the two final races of the 1990 season . This was followed by the Judd GV10 engine being used by several teams during the 1991 season and the Toyota TS010 that debuted in the last race of the season. The Audi R15 TDI

235-421: A keel, and the suspension was mounted higher on the car than the TF105. It seemed to particularly suit Ralf Schumacher , as on its first outing, Ralf took pole at Suzuka , helped by his knowledge of the track from his Formula Nippon days. The TF105B was led to points finishes twice by Ralf Schumacher, with 7 points in total being scored with the car, including a podium in the 2005 Chinese Grand Prix . During

282-495: A podium finish during the season. Points were awarded to the top eight classified finishers. Notes: Notes: V10 engine A V10 engine is a ten- cylinder piston engine where two banks of five cylinders are arranged in a V configuration around a common crankshaft . V10 engines are much less common than V8 and V12 engines . Several V10 diesel engines have been produced since 1965, and V10 petrol engines for road cars were first produced in 1991 with

329-457: A puncture and crashed at the end of the start-finish straight, with Ralf Schumacher crashing at the oval section for the same reason on the following lap. Schumacher suffered a concussion and fractured vertebrae in that final-corner accident, which kept him out of the following six races. Thanks to the high attrition rate, only eight cars crossed the line; the final finisher was Zsolt Baumgartner , who became Hungary's first points scorer and earned

376-509: A ten-place penalty for an engine change—and Fernando Alonso. Front-row starter Juan Pablo Montoya could only manage a fifth-place finish, while his new teammate Antônio Pizzonia finished seventh. After setting the fastest lap of the race, Kimi Räikkönen suffered a high-speed rear wing failure at the end of the start-finish straight on lap 14 and crashed into the tyre wall. A string of disappointing results from Toyota's Cristiano da Matta led to his replacement by test driver Ricardo Zonta from

423-567: The Dodge Viper while the truck version of the engine was used starting in 1994 in the Dodge Ram . It discontinued in that application after 2003. However, 2003 also saw the introduction of the Dodge Ram SRT-10 , a performance model meant to rival Ford's successful V8 powered F-150 SVT Lightning . The Viper engine (a 90-degree engine with odd firing order to obviate the need for a balance shaft)

470-583: The European Grand Prix at the Nürburgring , with Barrichello and Button following him home in second and third. Ralf Schumacher, meanwhile, collided with da Matta at the start, causing both cars to retire from the race. Front-row starter and one-time leader Sato joined the list of retirements with a late engine failure, as did the McLaren duo of Räikkönen and Coulthard, both of whose Mercedes engines expired at

517-522: The Hungarian Grand Prix onward. There, Schumacher led another Ferrari 1–2 in both qualifying and the race to secure Ferrari the Constructors' trophy, with the race's 2003 winner Alonso completing the podium. The Belgian Grand Prix also included numerous accidents and safety car periods. A first-lap collision between Mark Webber and Takuma Sato eliminated both of them; Zsolt Baumgartner avoided

Daimler-Benz produced three V10 diesel engine models (OM403, OM423 and OM443) for Mercedes-Benz NG and Neoplan buses in 1970s–1980s. Four Japanese commercial vehicle manufacturers ( Isuzu , Hino , Mitsubishi Fuso and Nissan Diesel ) produced V10 diesel engines for their heavy duty trucks and coaches in 1970s–2000s. The 1983–2023 Tatra 815 truck

752-494: The United States Grand Prix , with Michael Schumacher alongside him. Schumacher would go on to win once more as Barrichello and Takuma Sato—scoring his first and only Formula One podium—completed the top three. It was a race dominated by accidents, however, beginning with a first-lap incident that eliminated Gianmaria Bruni , Giorgio Pantano, Felipe Massa és Christian Klien . On the ninth lap, Fernando Alonso suffered

799-790: The eighth series . With the ExCeL Exhibition Centre empty, The Stig (this was actually Jarno Trulli wearing the Stig's signature helmet as Toyota would not let a non Toyota driver drive the car) set a record of 81 miles per hour (130 km/h), due to the lack of grip on the polished floor and the limited distance. The speed has since been broken by the American Top Gear host Tanner Foust with his Ford Fiesta Rallycross. Four of the ten teams, Ferrari, Renault, Jaguar, and Toyota, were subsidiaries of major car companies. However, BAR was a division of British American Tobacco . Williams and McLaren, both privately-owned teams, had engine supply agreements with BMW and Mercedes-Benz respectively, and Honda produced engines for BAR. The other three teams, Jordan , Sauber and Minardi , were also privately owned but received little substantial sponsorship and consequently tended to end up toward

893-678: The 2005 season, Toyota designed the RVX-06 V8 engine, which was used on the Toyota TF106 the following season. In order to test this new engine, the TF105 chassis was adapted to accommodate the V8 engine. The TF105.5 was driven by the team's test driver, Frenchman Olivier Panis who stated that the new V8 engine was 2.5 seconds slower than the V10 engine used by Toyota in 2005. A TF105 set the previously nonexistent indoor speed record on an episode of Top Gear during

1034-599: The Williams of Ralf Schumacher—along with his fifth-placed teammate Juan Pablo Montoya and the Toyotas of Cristiano da Matta and Olivier Panis in eighth and tenth—would later be excluded from the results due to an irregularity in the brake ducts, promoting Barrichello to second and Button to third. The McLaren and Jordan teams were also beneficiaries of the four disqualifications, with Glock—in his Formula One début—and Nick Heidfeld both scoring points. Barrichello qualified on pole for

1081-442: The added expense. The 2004 season also saw a change in technical regulations, including banning fully-automatic gearboxes and launch control , both of which had been used for the past three seasons. 2004 was the first time since the beginning of 2001 (pre- Spanish Grand Prix ) that cars competed without these systems. However, the use of traction control was still permitted by the FIA , and continued to be allowed for use over

1128-407: The back of David Coulthard 's McLaren and flip over. Olivier Panis stalled as the race was due to begin, shortening the race to 77 laps as the remaining drivers completed a second formation lap. Panis later recovered to eighth place as he and sixth-placed Cristiano da Matta scored Toyota 's first points of the season. Michael Schumacher returned to his winning ways by leading the majority of

1175-541: The back of the grid. Sauber received Ferrari engines badged under the Petronas name and received sponsorship from the Malaysian oil and gas company. Five constructors entered free practice only drivers over the course of the season. ^1 – Leinders was entered as third driver for Round 1 but was refused a FIA Super Licence until he completed the required mileage in a Formula One car. He satisfied this requirement before

1222-547: The chassis was designed by Gustav Brunner . Toyota's form shocked many in the F1 paddock, as the Toyota team claimed two second-place finishes in a row and 27 points in the first three races of the season. The car was driven to 88 points with the team, with 5 podium positions also being scored. The car was updated to the TF105B for the 2005 Japanese Grand Prix . It was unique as it ran without

1269-613: The eighth lap and finished nearly ten seconds ahead. Button and Juan Pablo Montoya completed the rostrum—the latter beating Fernando Alonso to the line by just two seconds—while Kimi Räikkönen recorded his first finish of the season in eighth, using a two-stop strategy to claim the final point from last on the grid. Despite suffering from a defective exhaust, Schumacher dominated the Spanish Grand Prix as well, as front-row starter Montoya retired with brake problems and early leader Jarno Trulli took third behind Rubens Barrichello. At

1316-457: The engine being used in any races. Alfa Romeo fitted the engine to two Alfa Romeo 164 Pro Car prototypes in 1988, however these cars also did not compete in any races. The most widespread use of V10 racing engines has been in Formula One. Following a ban on turbocharged engines after 1988, the first V10 Formula One cars were the 1989 McLaren MP4/5 and Williams FW12 . V10 engines were used by

1363-563: The fastest lap—from second on the grid, with his soon-to-be McLaren teammate Kimi Räikkönen and polesitter Barrichello finishing behind him. It was Montoya's last outing for Williams and the team's last victory until the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix . It was also the final race for Minardi duo Zsolt Baumgartner and Gianmaria Bruni and the Jaguar team's last entry before they were bought by Red Bull . David Coulthard finished his last season with McLaren (the team he had been with since 1996 ) without

1410-475: The grid. Michael Schumacher finished second and thus secured himself the world title, as his forty-point gap to Rubens Barrichello—who finished the race third—was by that point insurmountable. At the Italian Grand Prix , Barrichello led a Ferrari 1–2 in front of the loyal Tifosi, although Schumacher, who started third, spun off on the first lap and had to rejoin the race at the back of the field. Following

1457-449: The initial wreckage but knocked teammate Gianmaria Bruni's car into the wall, which then bounced back and collected Giorgio Pantano. On the thirtieth lap, Jenson Button suffered a right-rear puncture and lost control of his car, crashing into the Minardi of Zsolt Baumgartner that he was attempting to lap. Kimi Räikkönen eventually won the race, his first of the year, from a lowly 10th place on

The V10 seemed the best compromise between the lower weight of a V8 and the higher power of a V12. Renault F1 used a flatter 110° angle in 2002 and 2003 , but reverted to a more conventional 72° following the change in rules which dictated that an engine must last two race weekends. In

1551-476: The manufacturer's home race. At the Canadian Grand Prix , Timo Glock replaced Giorgio Pantano at Jordan for financial reasons. Ralf Schumacher qualified on pole position, joined by Jenson Button on the front row, with Michael Schumacher only starting from sixth. After a series of lead changes, the elder Schumacher ultimately crossed the line first, followed by his brother and Rubens Barrichello. But

1598-487: The next race. From the 2004 season onward, all the teams that did not finish in the top four in the previous year's Constructors' Championship were allowed to run a third car in the Friday practice session before each Grand Prix, for testing purposes. While other teams were permitted to have test drivers, they were not allowed to compete in the Friday practice. Sauber chose not to run its third driver in these sessions because of

1645-672: The next three seasons, until it was banned for the 2008 season . The 2004 Formula One calendar featured two new events: the Bahrain Grand Prix and the Chinese Grand Prix , held at two newly built circuits in Sakhir and Shanghai . The season featured the most races outside Europe to that point; eight Grands Prix were held in the Americas, Asia, and Oceania. The Brazilian Grand Prix moved from its traditional early season slot to become

The Japanese Grand Prix weekend was affected by Typhoon Ma-on , which caused widespread damage to parts of Japan and saw the postponement of qualifying to the morning of race day. With the rain dying down in time for the race, Michael Schumacher took his 13th win from pole, with his brother Ralf starting and finishing second and Jenson Button completing

1739-613: The podium. Schumacher followed that up with another pole and victory at Sepang , finishing ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya and Jenson Button , the British driver scoring his first career podium and the BAR Honda team's best result since the 2001 German Grand Prix . Mark Webber , who split the Ferraris in qualifying in his unfancied Jaguar , suffered a poor start before colliding with Ralf Schumacher and spinning out. Formula One's first visit to

1786-457: The podium. A collision between David Coulthard and Rubens Barrichello—who set the fastest lap of the race—eliminated both of them from the Grand Prix. Following his acrimonious split from Renault, Jarno Trulli finished eleventh in his first race for Toyota, while his teammate Olivier Panis retired from the sport after the race. The Brazilian Grand Prix was won by Juan Pablo Montoya—who also set

Immediately before the Chinese Grand Prix , fellow Italian Giorgio Pantano was dropped by the Jordan team and replaced once more by Timo Glock for the last three races. That race was also won by Barrichello from pole, with Button and Räikkönen less than 2 seconds behind. Michael Schumacher started from

1880-445: The release of the Dodge Viper . The V10 configuration does not have perfect engine balance , since an unbalanced rocking couple is caused by each cylinder bank functioning as a straight-five engine . Therefore, balance shafts are sometimes used to reduce the vibrations in a V10 engine. One of the first known V10 engines was used in the 1936 Busch-Sulzer ICRR 9201 prototype locomotive, of which three examples were produced in

1927-520: The safety car. That safety car period was necessitated by Fernando Alonso, who slammed the barrier on lap 42 while attempting to lap the Williams of Ralf Schumacher in the tunnel. Earlier in the race, a fast-starting Takuma Sato suffered a spectacular engine failure on the third lap at the Tabac corner; the smoke from the rear of his BAR machine blinded the queue behind him, causing Giancarlo Fisichella to mount

The Volkswagen V10 TDI is a turbocharged V10 engine which was produced from 2002 to 2010 for use in the Volkswagen Phaeton luxury sedan and Volkswagen Touareg SUV. V10 engines are less common than V8 and V12 engines, a V12 is only slightly more complicated and runs more smoothly, while a V8 is less complex and more economical. Nevertheless, modern engineering has made it possible to use V10 engines for applications where

2115-401: Was improved during its production run, and produced as much as 477  kW (640  hp ; 649  PS ) in a standard state of tune from an 8.4 L version. The Viper engine was also used by Bristol in the two-seat Fighter coupe , and in other low-volume vehicles. Ford also developed a heavy-duty V10 version of their Triton engine to replace the 460 big block in truck applications. It

2162-978: Was introduced in the E-Series/Econoline full-size van , and also saw duty in the F-Series Super Duty line and the Ford Excursion SUV, and was offered by Ford through the 2019 model year. For the Lexus LFA , the engineers selected a V10 engine over an equivalent displacement V8 because they could not get the V8 to rev as high as a V10, and over a V12 for its lower reciprocating mass, allowing for more rapid engine response. High-revving V10 power-plants were incorporated into supercars from Lamborghini and Porsche . BMW and Audi developed V10s for high performance cars such as BMW M5 , BMW M6 , Audi S6 , Audi RS6 , Audi S8 and Audi R8 , mostly based upon their executive cars . Volkswagen also developed
