Polycarbonates ( PC ) are a group of thermoplastic polymers containing carbonate groups in their chemical structures. Polycarbonates used in engineering are strong, tough materials, and some grades are optically transparent. They are easily worked, molded , and thermoformed . Because of these properties, polycarbonates find many applications. Polycarbonates do not have a unique resin identification code (RIC) and are identified as "Other", 7 on the RIC list. Products made from polycarbonate can contain the precursor monomer bisphenol A (BPA).

144-609: Carbonate esters have planar OC(OC) 2 cores, which confer rigidity. The unique O=C bond is short (1.173 Å in the depicted example), while the C-O bonds are more ether-like (the bond distances of 1.326 Å for the example depicted). Polycarbonates received their name because they are polymers containing carbonate groups (−O−(C=O)−O−). A balance of useful features, including temperature resistance, impact resistance and optical properties, positions polycarbonates between commodity plastics and engineering plastics . The main polycarbonate material

288-501: A branched polycarbonate. Both companies filed for U.S. patents in 1955, and agreed that the company lacking priority would be granted a license to the technology. Patent priority was resolved in Bayer's favor, and Bayer began commercial production under the trade name Makrolon in 1958. GE began production under the name Lexan in 1960, creating the GE Plastics division in 1973. After 1970,

432-459: A catalyst . Laboratory synthesis of biopolymers, especially of proteins , is an area of intensive research. There are three main classes of biopolymers: polysaccharides , polypeptides , and polynucleotides . In living cells, they may be synthesized by enzyme-mediated processes, such as the formation of DNA catalyzed by DNA polymerase . The synthesis of proteins involves multiple enzyme-mediated processes to transcribe genetic information from

576-441: A lower critical solution temperature phase transition (LCST), at which phase separation occurs with heating. In dilute solutions, the properties of the polymer are characterized by the interaction between the solvent and the polymer. In a good solvent, the polymer appears swollen and occupies a large volume. In this scenario, intermolecular forces between the solvent and monomer subunits dominate over intramolecular interactions. In

720-471: A vacuum or an electrical insulator material known as a dielectric . Examples of dielectric media are glass, air, paper, plastic, ceramic, and even a semiconductor depletion region chemically identical to the conductors. From Coulomb's law a charge on one conductor will exert a force on the charge carriers within the other conductor, attracting opposite polarity charge and repelling like polarity charges, thus an opposite polarity charge will be induced on

864-484: A "Low voltage electrolytic capacitor with porous carbon electrodes". He believed that the energy was stored as a charge in the carbon pores used in his capacitor as in the pores of the etched foils of electrolytic capacitors. Because the double layer mechanism was not known by him at the time, he wrote in the patent: "It is not known exactly what is taking place in the component if it is used for energy storage, but it leads to an extremely high capacity." The MOS capacitor

1008-655: A German scientist working at the University of Munich . However, after 30 years' laboratory research, this class of materials was abandoned without commercialization. Research resumed in 1953, when Hermann Schnell at Bayer in Uerdingen, Germany patented the first linear polycarbonate. The brand name "Makrolon" was registered in 1955. Also in 1953, and one week after the invention at Bayer, Daniel Fox at General Electric (GE) in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, independently synthesized

1152-498: A bad solvent or poor solvent, intramolecular forces dominate and the chain contracts. In the theta solvent , or the state of the polymer solution where the value of the second virial coefficient becomes 0, the intermolecular polymer-solvent repulsion balances exactly the intramolecular monomer-monomer attraction. Under the theta condition (also called the Flory condition), the polymer behaves like an ideal random coil . The transition between

1296-428: A capacitor depends on its capacitance . While some capacitance exists between any two electrical conductors in proximity in a circuit , a capacitor is a component designed specifically to add capacitance to some part of the circuit. The physical form and construction of practical capacitors vary widely and many types of capacitor are in common use. Most capacitors contain at least two electrical conductors , often in

1440-408: A degree of crystallinity approaching zero or one will tend to be transparent, while polymers with intermediate degrees of crystallinity will tend to be opaque due to light scattering by crystalline or glassy regions. For many polymers, crystallinity may also be associated with decreased transparency. The space occupied by a polymer molecule is generally expressed in terms of radius of gyration , which

1584-587: A deviation from a simple linear chain. A branched polymer molecule is composed of a main chain with one or more substituent side chains or branches. Types of branched polymers include star polymers , comb polymers , polymer brushes , dendronized polymers , ladder polymers , and dendrimers . There exist also two-dimensional polymers (2DP) which are composed of topologically planar repeat units. A polymer's architecture affects many of its physical properties including solution viscosity, melt viscosity, solubility in various solvents, glass-transition temperature and

1728-480: A dielectric of permittivity ε {\displaystyle \varepsilon } . It is assumed the gap d {\displaystyle d} is much smaller than the dimensions of the plates. This model applies well to many practical capacitors which are constructed of metal sheets separated by a thin layer of insulating dielectric, since manufacturers try to keep the dielectric very uniform in thickness to avoid thin spots which can cause failure of

1872-700: A finite amount of energy before dielectric breakdown occurs. The capacitor's dielectric material has a dielectric strength U d which sets the capacitor's breakdown voltage at V = V bd = U d d . The maximum energy that the capacitor can store is therefore E = 1 2 C V 2 = 1 2 ε A d ( U d d ) 2 = 1 2 ε A d U d 2 {\displaystyle E={\frac {1}{2}}CV^{2}={\frac {1}{2}}{\frac {\varepsilon A}{d}}\left(U_{d}d\right)^{2}={\frac {1}{2}}\varepsilon AdU_{d}^{2}} The maximum energy

2016-491: A flexible dielectric sheet (like oiled paper) sandwiched between sheets of metal foil, rolled or folded into a small package. Early capacitors were known as condensers , a term that is still occasionally used today, particularly in high power applications, such as automotive systems. The term condensatore was used by Alessandro Volta in 1780 to refer to a device, similar to his electrophorus , he developed to measure electricity, and translated in 1782 as condenser , where

2160-464: A flexible quality. Plasticizers are also put in some types of cling film to make the polymer more flexible. The attractive forces between polymer chains play a large part in determining the polymer's properties. Because polymer chains are so long, they have many such interchain interactions per molecule, amplifying the effect of these interactions on the polymer properties in comparison to attractions between conventional molecules. Different side groups on

2304-479: A given application, the properties of a polymer can be tuned or enhanced by combination with other materials, as in composites . Their application allows to save energy (lighter cars and planes, thermally insulated buildings), protect food and drinking water (packaging), save land and lower use of fertilizers (synthetic fibres), preserve other materials (coatings), protect and save lives (hygiene, medical applications). A representative, non-exhaustive list of applications

2448-408: A high melting point. Polycarbonate is relatively difficult for casual hobbyists to print compared to thermoplastics such as Polylactic acid (PLA) or Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) because of the high melting point, difficulty with print bed adhesion, tendency to warp during printing, and tendency to absorb moisture in humid environments. Despite these issues, 3D printing using polycarbonates

2592-402: A high surface quality and are also highly transparent so that the laser properties are dominated by the laser dye used to dope the polymer matrix. These type of lasers, that also belong to the class of organic lasers , are known to yield very narrow linewidths which is useful for spectroscopy and analytical applications. An important optical parameter in the polymer used in laser applications

2736-449: A higher-frequency signal or a larger capacitor results in a lower voltage amplitude per current amplitude – an AC "short circuit" or AC coupling . Conversely, for very low frequencies, the reactance is high, so that a capacitor is nearly an open circuit in AC analysis – those frequencies have been "filtered out". Capacitors are different from resistors and inductors in that the impedance

2880-599: A miniaturized and more reliable low-voltage support capacitor to complement their newly invented transistor . With the development of plastic materials by organic chemists during the Second World War , the capacitor industry began to replace paper with thinner polymer films. One very early development in film capacitors was described in British Patent 587,953 in 1944. Electric double-layer capacitors (now supercapacitors ) were invented in 1957 when H. Becker developed

3024-401: A polymer behaves as a continuous macroscopic material. They are classified as bulk properties, or intensive properties according to thermodynamics . The bulk properties of a polymer are those most often of end-use interest. These are the properties that dictate how the polymer actually behaves on a macroscopic scale. The tensile strength of a material quantifies how much elongating stress

3168-421: A polymer is its first and most important attribute. Polymer nomenclature is generally based upon the type of monomer residues comprising the polymer. A polymer which contains only a single type of repeat unit is known as a homopolymer , while a polymer containing two or more types of repeat units is known as a copolymer . A terpolymer is a copolymer which contains three types of repeat units. Polystyrene

3312-433: A polymeric material can be described at different length scales, from the sub-nm length scale up to the macroscopic one. There is in fact a hierarchy of structures, in which each stage provides the foundations for the next one. The starting point for the description of the structure of a polymer is the identity of its constituent monomers. Next, the microstructure essentially describes the arrangement of these monomers within

3456-536: A process called reptation in which each chain molecule is constrained by entanglements with neighboring chains to move within a virtual tube. The theory of reptation can explain polymer molecule dynamics and viscoelasticity . Depending on their chemical structures, polymers may be either semi-crystalline or amorphous. Semi-crystalline polymers can undergo crystallization and melting transitions , whereas amorphous polymers do not. In polymers, crystallization and melting do not suggest solid-liquid phase transitions, as in

3600-427: A result, they typically have lower melting temperatures than other polymers. When a polymer is dispersed or dissolved in a liquid, such as in commercial products like paints and glues, the chemical properties and molecular interactions influence how the solution flows and can even lead to self-assembly of the polymer into complex structures. When a polymer is applied as a coating, the chemical properties will influence

3744-509: A similar capacitor, which was named the Leyden jar , after the University of Leiden where he worked. He also was impressed by the power of the shock he received, writing, "I would not take a second shock for the kingdom of France." Daniel Gralath was the first to combine several jars in parallel to increase the charge storage capacity. Benjamin Franklin investigated the Leyden jar and came to

3888-423: A small amount (see Non-ideal behavior ). The earliest forms of capacitors were created in the 1740s, when European experimenters discovered that electric charge could be stored in water-filled glass jars that came to be known as Leyden jars . Today, capacitors are widely used in electronic circuits for blocking direct current while allowing alternating current to pass. In analog filter networks, they smooth

4032-456: A statistical distribution of chain lengths, the molecular weight is expressed in terms of weighted averages. The number-average molecular weight ( M n ) and weight-average molecular weight ( M w ) are most commonly reported. The ratio of these two values ( M w / M n ) is the dispersity ( Đ ), which is commonly used to express the width of the molecular weight distribution. The physical properties of polymer strongly depend on

4176-537: A tendency to form amorphous and semicrystalline structures rather than crystals . Polymers are studied in the fields of polymer science (which includes polymer chemistry and polymer physics ), biophysics and materials science and engineering . Historically, products arising from the linkage of repeating units by covalent chemical bonds have been the primary focus of polymer science. An emerging important area now focuses on supramolecular polymers formed by non-covalent links. Polyisoprene of latex rubber

4320-432: A variety of different but structurally related monomer residues; for example, polynucleotides such as DNA are composed of four types of nucleotide subunits. A polymer containing ionizable subunits (e.g., pendant carboxylic groups ) is known as a polyelectrolyte or ionomer , when the fraction of ionizable units is large or small respectively. The microstructure of a polymer (sometimes called configuration) relates to

4464-467: A voltage of one volt across the device. Because the conductors (or plates) are close together, the opposite charges on the conductors attract one another due to their electric fields, allowing the capacitor to store more charge for a given voltage than when the conductors are separated, yielding a larger capacitance. In practical devices, charge build-up sometimes affects the capacitor mechanically, causing its capacitance to vary. In this case, capacitance

4608-465: A volume of water in a hand-held glass jar. Von Kleist's hand and the water acted as conductors and the jar as a dielectric (although details of the mechanism were incorrectly identified at the time). Von Kleist found that touching the wire resulted in a powerful spark, much more painful than that obtained from an electrostatic machine. The following year, the Dutch physicist Pieter van Musschenbroek invented

4752-405: A wide-meshed cross-linking between the "main chains". Close-meshed crosslinking, on the other hand, leads to thermosets . Cross-links and branches are shown as red dots in the figures. Highly branched polymers are amorphous and the molecules in the solid interact randomly. An important microstructural feature of a polymer is its architecture and shape, which relates to the way branch points lead to

4896-590: Is inversely proportional to the defining characteristic; i.e., capacitance . A capacitor connected to an alternating voltage source has a displacement current to flowing through it. In the case that the voltage source is V 0 cos(ωt), the displacement current can be expressed as: I = C d V d t = − ω C V 0 sin ⁡ ( ω t ) {\displaystyle I=C{\frac {{\text{d}}V}{{\text{d}}t}}=-\omega {C}{V_{0}}\sin(\omega t)} At sin( ωt ) = −1 ,

5040-595: Is a compound that is currently on the list of potential environmental hazardous chemicals. It is on the watch list of many countries, such as United States and Germany. The leaching of BPA from polycarbonate can also occur at environmental temperature and normal pH (in landfills). The amount of leaching increases as the polycarbonate parts get older. A study found that the decomposition of BPA in landfills (under anaerobic conditions) will not occur. It will therefore be persistent in landfills. Eventually, it will find its way into water bodies and contribute to aquatic pollution. In

5184-479: Is a crucial physical parameter for polymer manufacturing, processing, and use. Below T g , molecular motions are frozen and polymers are brittle and glassy. Above T g , molecular motions are activated and polymers are rubbery and viscous. The glass-transition temperature may be engineered by altering the degree of branching or crosslinking in the polymer or by the addition of plasticizers . Whereas crystallization and melting are first-order phase transitions ,

5328-400: Is a function of dielectric volume, permittivity , and dielectric strength . Changing the plate area and the separation between the plates while maintaining the same volume causes no change of the maximum amount of energy that the capacitor can store, so long as the distance between plates remains much smaller than both the length and width of the plates. In addition, these equations assume that

5472-410: Is a long-chain n -alkane. There are also branched macromolecules with a main chain and side chains, in the case of polyethylene the side chains would be alkyl groups . In particular unbranched macromolecules can be in the solid state semi-crystalline, crystalline chain sections highlighted red in the figure below. While branched and unbranched polymers are usually thermoplastics, many elastomers have

5760-400: Is also commonly present in polymer backbones, such as those of polyethylene glycol , polysaccharides (in glycosidic bonds ), and DNA (in phosphodiester bonds ). Polymerization is the process of combining many small molecules known as monomers into a covalently bonded chain or network. During the polymerization process, some chemical groups may be lost from each monomer. This happens in

5904-482: Is also used as a printing substrate for nameplate and other forms of industrial grade under printed products. The polycarbonate provides a barrier to wear, the elements, and fading. Many polycarbonate grades are used in medical applications and comply with both ISO 10993-1 and USP Class VI standards (occasionally referred to as PC-ISO). Class VI is the most stringent of the six USP ratings. These grades can be sterilized using steam at 120 °C, gamma radiation , or by

6048-512: Is an average distance from the center of mass of the chain to the chain itself. Alternatively, it may be expressed in terms of pervaded volume , which is the volume spanned by the polymer chain and scales with the cube of the radius of gyration. The simplest theoretical models for polymers in the molten, amorphous state are ideal chains . Polymer properties depend of their structure and they are divided into classes according to their physical bases. Many physical and chemical properties describe how

6192-481: Is an example of a natural polymer, and the polystyrene of styrofoam is an example of a synthetic polymer. In biological contexts, essentially all biological macromolecules —i.e., proteins (polyamides), nucleic acids (polynucleotides), and polysaccharides —are purely polymeric, or are composed in large part of polymeric components. The term "polymer" derives from Greek πολύς (polus)  'many, much' and μέρος (meros)  'part'. The term

6336-408: Is applied across the terminals of a capacitor, for example when a capacitor is connected across a battery, an electric field develops across the dielectric, causing a net positive charge to collect on one plate and net negative charge to collect on the other plate. No current actually flows through a perfect dielectric . However, there is a flow of charge through the source circuit. If the condition

6480-408: Is approximately the same width as the plate separation, d {\displaystyle d} , and assuming d {\displaystyle d} is small compared to the plate dimensions, it is small enough to be ignored. Therefore, if a charge of + Q {\displaystyle +Q} is placed on one plate and − Q {\displaystyle -Q} on

6624-478: Is attacked by another phenoxide. The net reaction from the diphenoxide is: In this way, approximately one billion kilograms of polycarbonate is produced annually. Many other diols have been tested in place of bisphenol A, e.g. 1,1-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)cyclohexane and dihydroxybenzophenone . The cyclohexane is used as a comonomer to suppress crystallisation tendency of the BPA-derived product. Tetrabromobisphenol A

6768-472: Is common in the professional community. A major polycarbonate market is the production of compact discs , DVDs , and Blu-ray discs. These discs are produced by injection-molding polycarbonate into a mold cavity that has on one side a metal stamper containing a negative image of the disc data, while the other mold side is a mirrored surface. Typical products of sheet/film production include applications in advertisement (signs, displays, poster protection). In

6912-474: Is common, but the use of BPA in the manufacture of polycarbonate has stirred concerns (see Potential hazards in food contact applications ), leading to development and use of "BPA-free" plastics in various formulations. Polycarbonate is commonly used in eye protection, as well as in other projectile-resistant viewing and lighting applications that would normally indicate the use of glass , but require much higher impact-resistance. Polycarbonate lenses also protect

7056-428: Is composed only of styrene -based repeat units, and is classified as a homopolymer. Polyethylene terephthalate , even though produced from two different monomers ( ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid ), is usually regarded as a homopolymer because only one type of repeat unit is formed. Ethylene-vinyl acetate contains more than one variety of repeat unit and is a copolymer. Some biological polymers are composed of

7200-447: Is defined as C = Q / V {\displaystyle C=Q/V} . Substituting V {\displaystyle V} above into this equation C = ε A d {\displaystyle C={\frac {\varepsilon A}{d}}} Therefore, in a capacitor the highest capacitance is achieved with a high permittivity dielectric material, large plate area, and small separation between

7344-419: Is defined in terms of incremental changes: C = d Q d V {\displaystyle C={\frac {\mathrm {d} Q}{\mathrm {d} V}}} In the hydraulic analogy , voltage is analogous to water pressure and electrical current through a wire is analogous to water flow through a pipe. A capacitor is like an elastic diaphragm within the pipe. Although water cannot pass through

7488-409: Is defined, for small strains , as the ratio of rate of change of stress to strain. Like tensile strength, this is highly relevant in polymer applications involving the physical properties of polymers, such as rubber bands. The modulus is strongly dependent on temperature. Viscoelasticity describes a complex time-dependent elastic response, which will exhibit hysteresis in the stress-strain curve when

7632-475: Is equal to the energy density per unit volume in the electric field multiplied by the volume of field between the plates, confirming that the energy in the capacitor is stored in its electric field. The current I ( t ) through any component in an electric circuit is defined as the rate of flow of a charge Q ( t ) passing through it. Actual charges – electrons – cannot pass through the dielectric of an ideal capacitor. Rather, one electron accumulates on

7776-452: Is given below. Capacitor In electrical engineering , a capacitor is a device that stores electrical energy by accumulating electric charges on two closely spaced surfaces that are insulated from each other. The capacitor was originally known as the condenser , a term still encountered in a few compound names, such as the condenser microphone . It is a passive electronic component with two terminals . The utility of

7920-640: Is limited to low stress applications. Stress from fasteners, plastic welding and molding render polycarbonate susceptible to stress corrosion cracking when it comes in contact with certain accelerants such as salt water and plastisol . It can be laminated to make bullet-proof "glass" , although "bullet-resistant" is more accurate for the thinner windows, such as are used in bullet-resistant windows in automobiles. The thicker barriers of transparent plastic used in teller's windows and barriers in banks are also polycarbonate. So-called "theft-proof" large plastic packaging for smaller items, which cannot be opened by hand,

8064-605: Is lower as a result. The toughest grades have the highest molecular mass, but are more difficult to process. Unlike most thermoplastics, polycarbonate can undergo large plastic deformations without cracking or breaking. As a result, it can be processed and formed at room temperature using sheet metal techniques, such as bending on a brake . Even for sharp angle bends with a tight radius, heating may not be necessary. This makes it valuable in prototyping applications where transparent or electrically non-conductive parts are needed, which cannot be made from sheet metal. PMMA/Acrylic , which

8208-462: Is maintained sufficiently long, the current through the source circuit ceases. If a time-varying voltage is applied across the leads of the capacitor, the source experiences an ongoing current due to the charging and discharging cycles of the capacitor. Capacitors are widely used as parts of electrical circuits in many common electrical devices. Unlike a resistor , an ideal capacitor does not dissipate energy, although real-life capacitors do dissipate

8352-430: Is produced by the reaction of bisphenol A (BPA) and phosgene COCl 2 . The overall reaction can be written as follows: [REDACTED] The first step of the synthesis involves treatment of bisphenol A with sodium hydroxide , which deprotonates the hydroxyl groups of the bisphenol A. The di phenoxide (Na 2 (OC 6 H 4 ) 2 CMe 2 ) reacts with phosgene to give a chloroformate , which subsequently

8496-443: Is similar in appearance to polycarbonate, is brittle and cannot be bent at room temperature. Main transformation techniques for polycarbonate resins: Polycarbonate may become brittle when exposed to ionizing radiation above 25 kGy (kJ/kg). Polycarbonate is mainly used for electronic applications that capitalize on its collective safety features. A good electrical insulator with heat-resistant and flame-retardant properties, it

8640-628: Is stronger and will hold up longer to extreme temperature. Thermally processed material is usually totally amorphous, and as a result is highly transparent to visible light , with better light transmission than many kinds of glass. Polycarbonate has a glass transition temperature of about 147 °C (297 °F), so it softens gradually above this point and flows above about 155 °C (311 °F). Tools must be held at high temperatures, generally above 80 °C (176 °F) to make strain-free and stress-free products. Low molecular mass grades are easier to mold than higher grades, but their strength

8784-956: Is the time constant of the system. As the capacitor reaches equilibrium with the source voltage, the voltages across the resistor and the current through the entire circuit decay exponentially . In the case of a discharging capacitor, the capacitor's initial voltage ( V Ci ) replaces V 0 . The equations become I ( t ) = V C i R e − t / τ 0 V ( t ) = V C i e − t / τ 0 Q ( t ) = C V C i e − t / τ 0 {\displaystyle {\begin{aligned}I(t)&={\frac {V_{Ci}}{R}}e^{-t/\tau _{0}}\\V(t)&=V_{Ci}\,e^{-t/\tau _{0}}\\Q(t)&=C\,V_{Ci}\,e^{-t/\tau _{0}}\end{aligned}}} Impedance ,

The list of synthetic polymers , roughly in order of worldwide demand, includes polyethylene , polypropylene , polystyrene , polyvinyl chloride , synthetic rubber , phenol formaldehyde resin (or Bakelite ), neoprene , nylon , polyacrylonitrile , PVB , silicone , and many more. More than 330 million tons of these polymers are made every year (2015). Most commonly,

It is the largest item of its type. Polycarbonate, being a versatile material with attractive processing and physical properties, has attracted myriad smaller applications. The use of injection molded drinking bottles, glasses and food containers

9936-462: Is used for opaque pieces). Standard polycarbonate resins are not suitable for long term exposure to UV radiation. To overcome this, the primary resin can have UV stabilisers added. These grades are sold as UV stabilized polycarbonate to injection moulding and extrusion companies. Other applications, including polycarbonate sheets, may have the anti-UV layer added as a special coating or a coextrusion for enhanced weathering resistance. Polycarbonate

10080-672: Is used in products associated with power systems and telecommunications hardware. It can serve as a dielectric in high-stability capacitors . Commercial manufacture of polycarbonate capacitors mostly stopped after sole manufacturer Bayer AG stopped making capacitor-grade polycarbonate film at the end of 2000. The second largest consumer of polycarbonates is the construction industry, e.g. for domelights, flat or curved glazing, roofing sheets and sound walls . Polycarbonates are used to create materials used in buildings that must be durable but light. Polycarbonates are used extensively in 3D FDM printing, producing durable strong plastic products with

If X C approaches infinity, the capacitor resembles an open circuit that poorly passes low frequencies. The current of the capacitor may be expressed in the form of cosines to better compare with the voltage of the source: I = − I 0 sin ⁡ ( ω t ) = I 0 cos ⁡ ( ω t + 90 ∘ ) {\displaystyle I=-I_{0}\sin({\omega t})=I_{0}\cos({\omega t}+{90^{\circ }})} In this situation,

11952-413: The capacitor. Since the separation between the plates is uniform over the plate area, the electric field between the plates E {\displaystyle E} is constant, and directed perpendicularly to the plate surface, except for an area near the edges of the plates where the field decreases because the electric field lines "bulge" out of the sides of the capacitor. This "fringing field" area

The crystallinity of polymers is characterized by their degree of crystallinity, ranging from zero for a completely non-crystalline polymer to one for a theoretical completely crystalline polymer. Polymers with microcrystalline regions are generally tougher (can be bent more without breaking) and more impact-resistant than totally amorphous polymers. Polymers with

Porcelain was used in the first ceramic capacitors . In

13392-400: The driving force for mixing is usually entropy , not interaction energy. In other words, miscible materials usually form a solution not because their interaction with each other is more favorable than their self-interaction, but because of an increase in entropy and hence free energy associated with increasing the amount of volume available to each component. This increase in entropy scales with

In reality there are fringing fields outside the dielectric, for example between the sides of the capacitor plates, which increase the effective capacitance of the capacitor. This is sometimes called parasitic capacitance . For some simple capacitor geometries this additional capacitance term can be calculated analytically. It becomes negligibly small when

Windscreens in small motorized vehicles are commonly made of polycarbonate, such as for motorcycles, ATVs, golf carts, and small airplanes and helicopters. The light weight of polycarbonate as opposed to glass has led to development of electronic display screens that replace glass with polycarbonate, for use in mobile and portable devices. Such displays include newer e-ink and some LCD screens, though CRT, plasma screen and other LCD technologies generally still require glass for its higher melting temperature and its ability to be etched in finer detail. As more and more governments are restricting

For

14112-476: The foils. The earliest unit of capacitance was the jar , equivalent to about 1.11 nanofarads . Leyden jars or more powerful devices employing flat glass plates alternating with foil conductors were used exclusively up until about 1900, when the invention of wireless ( radio ) created a demand for standard capacitors, and the steady move to higher frequencies required capacitors with lower inductance . More compact construction methods began to be used, such as

14256-418: The form of metallic plates or surfaces separated by a dielectric medium. A conductor may be a foil, thin film, sintered bead of metal, or an electrolyte . 14400-527: The free energy of mixing for polymer solutions and thereby making solvation less favorable, and thereby making the availability of concentrated solutions of polymers far rarer than those of small molecules. Furthermore, the phase behavior of polymer solutions and mixtures is more complex than that of small molecule mixtures. Whereas most small molecule solutions exhibit only an upper critical solution temperature phase transition (UCST), at which phase separation occurs with cooling, polymer mixtures commonly exhibit

14544-401: The glass transition is not. The glass transition shares features of second-order phase transitions (such as discontinuity in the heat capacity, as shown in the figure), but it is generally not considered a thermodynamic transition between equilibrium states. In general, polymeric mixtures are far less miscible than mixtures of small molecule materials. This effect results from the fact that

Solid electrolyte tantalum capacitors were invented by Bell Laboratories in the early 1950s as

14976-451: The latter case, increasing the polymer chain length 10-fold would increase the viscosity over 1000 times. Increasing chain length furthermore tends to decrease chain mobility, increase strength and toughness, and increase the glass-transition temperature (T g ). This is a result of the increase in chain interactions such as van der Waals attractions and entanglements that come with increased chain length. These interactions tend to fix

15120-436: The length (or equivalently, the molecular weight) of the polymer chain. One important example of the physical consequences of the molecular weight is the scaling of the viscosity (resistance to flow) in the melt. The influence of the weight-average molecular weight ( M w {\displaystyle M_{w}} ) on the melt viscosity ( η {\displaystyle \eta } ) depends on whether

Polymers, both natural and synthetic, are created via polymerization of many small molecules, known as monomers . Their consequently large molecular mass , relative to small molecule compounds , produces unique physical properties including toughness , high elasticity , viscoelasticity , and

15840-618: The name referred to the device's ability to store a higher density of electric charge than was possible with an isolated conductor. The term became deprecated because of the ambiguous meaning of steam condenser , with capacitor becoming the recommended term in the UK from 1926, while the change occurred considerably later in the United States. The total energy W {\displaystyle W} stored in a capacitor (expressed in joules ) is equal to the total work done in establishing the electric field from an uncharged state. W = ∫ 0 Q V ( q ) d q = ∫ 0 Q q C d q = 1 2 Q 2 C = 1 2 V Q = 1 2 C V 2 {\displaystyle W=\int _{0}^{Q}V(q)\,\mathrm {d} q=\int _{0}^{Q}{\frac {q}{C}}\,\mathrm {d} q={\frac {1}{2}}{\frac {Q^{2}}{C}}={\frac {1}{2}}VQ={\frac {1}{2}}CV^{2}} where Q {\displaystyle Q}

16272-444: The number of particles (or moles) being mixed. Since polymeric molecules are much larger and hence generally have much higher specific volumes than small molecules, the number of molecules involved in a polymeric mixture is far smaller than the number in a small molecule mixture of equal volume. The energetics of mixing, on the other hand, is comparable on a per volume basis for polymeric and small molecule mixtures. This tends to increase

16416-568: The original brownish polycarbonate tint was improved to "glass-clear". The use of polycarbonate containers for the purpose of food storage is controversial. The basis of this controversy is their hydrolysis (degradation by water, often referred to as leaching) occurring at high temperature, releases bisphenol A : More than 100 studies have explored the bioactivity of bisphenol A derived from polycarbonates. Bisphenol A appeared to be released from polycarbonate animal cages into water at room temperature and it may have been responsible for enlargement of

The most common example of natural capacitance are

16848-713: The partially negatively charged oxygen atoms in C=O groups on another. These strong hydrogen bonds, for example, result in the high tensile strength and melting point of polymers containing urethane or urea linkages. Polyesters have dipole-dipole bonding between the oxygen atoms in C=O groups and the hydrogen atoms in H-C groups. Dipole bonding is not as strong as hydrogen bonding, so a polyester's melting point and strength are lower than Kevlar 's ( Twaron ), but polyesters have greater flexibility. Polymers with non-polar units such as polyethylene interact only through weak Van der Waals forces . As

In the case of unbranched polyethylene, this chain

The voltage(difference) V {\displaystyle V} between the plates is defined as the line integral of the electric field over a line (in the z-direction) from one plate to another V = ∫ 0 d E ( z ) d z = E d = σ ε d = Q d ε A {\displaystyle V=\int _{0}^{d}E(z)\,\mathrm {d} z=Ed={\frac {\sigma }{\varepsilon }}d={\frac {Qd}{\varepsilon A}}} The capacitance

17280-451: The plates, the charge moving under the influence of the electric field will do work on the external circuit. If the gap between the capacitor plates d {\displaystyle d} is constant, as in the parallel plate model above, the electric field between the plates will be uniform (neglecting fringing fields) and will have a constant value E = V / d {\displaystyle E=V/d} . In this case

Since the area A {\displaystyle A} of the plates increases with the square of the linear dimensions and the separation d {\displaystyle d} increases linearly, the capacitance scales with the linear dimension of a capacitor ( C ∝ L {\displaystyle C\varpropto L} ), or as the cube root of the volume. A parallel plate capacitor can only store

A good example of the action of plasticizers is related to polyvinylchlorides or PVCs. A uPVC, or unplasticized polyvinylchloride, is used for things such as pipes. A pipe has no plasticizers in it, because it needs to remain strong and heat-resistant. Plasticized PVC is used in clothing for

17712-426: The polymer at the scale of a single chain. The microstructure determines the possibility for the polymer to form phases with different arrangements, for example through crystallization , the glass transition or microphase separation . These features play a major role in determining the physical and chemical properties of a polymer. The identity of the repeat units (monomer residues, also known as "mers") comprising

17856-540: The polymer can lend the polymer to ionic bonding or hydrogen bonding between its own chains. These stronger forces typically result in higher tensile strength and higher crystalline melting points. The intermolecular forces in polymers can be affected by dipoles in the monomer units. The distinct piece of each monomer that is incorporated into the polymer is known as a repeat unit or monomer residue. Synthetic methods are generally divided into two categories, step-growth polymerization and chain polymerization . The essential difference between

This can proceed via two different pathways,

18432-654: The products formed depends on which mechanism takes place. Pathway A Pathway B Photo-aging is another degradation route for polycarbonates. Polycarbonate molecules (such as the aromatic ring) absorb UV radiation. This absorbed energy causes cleavage of covalent bonds which initiates the photo-aging process. The reaction can be propagated via side chain oxidation, ring oxidation or photo-Fries rearrangement . Products formed include phenyl salicylate , dihydroxybenzophenone groups, and hydroxydiphenyl ether groups. Liquid products contained mainly phenol derivatives (~75wt.%) and bisphenol (~10wt.%) also present. Polycarbonate, however, can be safely used as a carbon source in the steel-making industry. Phenol derivatives are environmental pollutants, classified as volatile organic compounds (VOC). Studies show they are likely to facilitate ground level ozone formation and increase photo-chemical smog. In aquatic bodies, they can potentially accumulate in organisms. They are persistent in landfills, do not readily evaporate and would remain in

After about 30 days at 85 °C/96% RH, surface crystals are formed which for 70% consisted of BPA. BPA

19008-647: The reproductive organs of female mice. However, the animal cages used in the research were fabricated from industrial grade polycarbonate, rather than FDA food grade polycarbonate. An analysis of the literature on bisphenol A leachate low-dose effects by vom Saal and Hughes published in August 2005 seems to have found a suggestive correlation between the source of funding and the conclusion drawn. Industry-funded studies tend to find no significant effects whereas government-funded studies tend to find significant effects. Sodium hypochlorite bleach and other alkali cleaners catalyze

A variety of techniques may be employed for the synthesis of a polymeric material with a range of architectures, for example living polymerization . A common means of expressing the length of a chain is the degree of polymerization , which quantifies the number of monomers incorporated into the chain. As with other molecules, a polymer's size may also be expressed in terms of molecular weight . Since synthetic polymerization techniques typically yield

19440-448: The states is known as a coil–globule transition . Inclusion of plasticizers tends to lower T g and increase polymer flexibility. Addition of the plasticizer will also modify dependence of the glass-transition temperature T g on the cooling rate. The mobility of the chain can further change if the molecules of plasticizer give rise to hydrogen bonding formation. Plasticizers are generally small molecules that are chemically similar to

20016-686: The term crystalline finds identical usage to that used in conventional crystallography . For example, the structure of a crystalline protein or polynucleotide, such as a sample prepared for x-ray crystallography , may be defined in terms of a conventional unit cell composed of one or more polymer molecules with cell dimensions of hundreds of angstroms or more. A synthetic polymer may be loosely described as crystalline if it contains regions of three-dimensional ordering on atomic (rather than macromolecular) length scales, usually arising from intramolecular folding or stacking of adjacent chains. Synthetic polymers may consist of both crystalline and amorphous regions;

20160-555: The two is that in chain polymerization, monomers are added to the chain one at a time only, such as in polystyrene , whereas in step-growth polymerization chains of monomers may combine with one another directly, such as in polyester . Step-growth polymerization can be divided into polycondensation , in which low-molar-mass by-product is formed in every reaction step, and polyaddition . Newer methods, such as plasma polymerization do not fit neatly into either category. Synthetic polymerization reactions may be carried out with or without

20592-605: Was coined in 1833 by Jöns Jacob Berzelius , though with a definition distinct from the modern IUPAC definition. The modern concept of polymers as covalently bonded macromolecular structures was proposed in 1920 by Hermann Staudinger , who spent the next decade finding experimental evidence for this hypothesis. Polymers are of two types: naturally occurring and synthetic or man made . Natural polymeric materials such as hemp , shellac , amber , wool , silk , and natural rubber have been used for centuries. A variety of other natural polymers exist, such as cellulose , which

The non-conductive region can either be
