83-576: The Palads was established in Copenhagen's former central railway station on Axeltorv which had ceased operations in 1911 following the construction of a new station. After major reconstruction work, the cinema opened on 18 October 1912. With 1780 seats and a 30-man orchestra, it was Scandinavia's largest entertainment centre. The former station building was completely demolished in 1917, providing space for today's building designed by Andreas Clemmensen and Johan Nielsen. Kai Nielsen 's sculpture of Ursus and

166-530: A combined station and administration building for the Danish State Railways , which was rejected. The station is designed in National Romantic style , a Nordic architectural style that was part of the National Romantic movement during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and which is often considered to be a form of Art Nouveau . The prominent materials are brick, slate and granite , and

249-659: A day. Intercity trains run half-hourly from Copenhagen during daytime and serve as a link between the major cities and towns in Denmark, including Odense , Aarhus , Aalborg , Esbjerg , Thisted and Sønderborg . Regional trains (stops at major stations within the Greater Copenhagen area) connect the main parts of Zealand to the capital. The Øresundståg regional rail network depart to southern and western Sweden every 20 minutes (24/7 service between Lund Central Station and Østerport Station). All S-train services except

332-521: A four-track terminal station on a bridge over the present tracks, or in a tunnel under them. According to the Østtællingen in 2008: Copenhagen Central Station is used as a location at 1:12:36 in the 1975 Olsen-banden film The Olsen Gang on the Track . Egon ( Ove Sprogøe ) hides a suitcase in the luggage storage at Copenhagen Central Station in The Olsen Gang Outta Sight (1977) and

415-466: A host of decorative details have been added. Inspired by Herholdt's railway station, Wenck also used a wooden arch construction both in the two departure and arrival halls and in the 6 arches over the platforms. It was probably just as much a stylistic choice, since Wenck rarely used cast iron . However, the entire railway station's foundation, basement and the platform that support the railway station site are made of reinforced concrete . Wenck's building

498-458: A largely unknown architect named L.F. Meyer (or Meier). But it has also been suggested that the railway station in Copenhagen should be attributed to the architect Harald Conrad Stilling , as there are strong similarities between the railway station and Stilling's roller coaster in the amusement park Tivoli Gardens . Both buildings are characterized by Italian rural architecture , and Stilling

581-590: A marketplace where fresh fruit sellers, newsstands, a post office, ATMs, currency exchanges, hamburgers, coffee shops, restaurants and pubs can all be found. There is also a travel center for information, a police station, and windows for the in-person sale of tickets, along with access to toilets. Shower rooms are also available for a smaller fee. Copenhagen Central Station provides Copenhagen with Intercity and Express trains across Denmark, as well as services to several international destinations. Direct international trains connect to Stockholm and Hamburg several times

664-458: A monumental reminder of Danish architecture in the beginning of the 20th century. As I express the wish that our new station may make establish a more firm connection between the capital and the country and between Denmark and abroad, I declare Copenhagen Station open!. The following day, 1 December, the first train departed from the station. Since the northbound tunnel (the Boulevard Line )

747-490: A short stretch of its route. Hence, some stations may be served by one intercity train while another may pass it. For example, the Intercity trains between Arnhem Central station and Utrecht Central station alternately serve Driebergen-Zeist or Veenendaal-De Klomp (and both when the frequency is lowered from 4tph to 2tph in the evening). Often, intercity trains run as local trains along the very end of its route. For example,

830-584: A staircase from the Tietgensgade street. There is a plan to extend the length of this track and build another track on the other side of the same platform, called track 27, and improve walking access to them. The station services the Copenhagen S-train network, but the S-train system in Copenhagen doesn't use any kind of hub at all. It is an urban transit which differs from most Metro systems mainly by being

913-584: A total of four S-train tracks, of the station can be said to begin as an underground station). A hotel ( Astoria ) is built above the S-train tracks in the Northern end, but the remaining tracks are uncovered below street level. (Open areas between tunnel sections were necessary to have during the era of steam trains, while the S-trains always have been electrical). In the opposite (platform) end, all platforms are covered with

996-438: A type of railway. At the station are two platforms with four tracks (track 9–12) that are used by the S-trains only. All other trains usually use the other four platforms and eight tracks. Because Denmark uses right-hand traffic , the tracks 1–4 are mainly used for northbound traffic, and tracks 5–8 for southbound, but tracks 3–6 can also be used for trains that change direction at the station. The main concourse also functions as

1079-484: Is a gesamtkunstwerk , where the architect has drawn all the details; right from the Bornholm tiles, benches, the large chandeliers, of which 12 pieces originally hung (2 are set up in the hall, 2 others are found at Østerport Station), the kiosks, wrought iron signs with neat writing, door handles and brass signs with DSB logo and stained glass windows with city coats of arms from Danish cities. The Danish sculptor Jens Lund

1162-482: Is applied on these trains. The Intercity network of the Danish State Railways consists of IC trains and their faster version, Lyntog (Lightning Train), which is identical but with fewer stops. Each train type operates hourly between the eastern terminus at Copenhagen and westwards to Odense – Århus – Ålborg , and less frequently to alternative destinations in Jutland . These are run by IC3 diesel materiel since most of

1245-488: Is located in the centre of Copenhagen, on the south-eastern perimeter of the historic old town , between the city districts of Indre By and Vesterbro . The station complex is bounded by the streets Bernstorffsgade , Banegårdspladsen , Reventlowsgade and Tietgensgade , the latter of which crosses the station throat on Tietgensbroen ( the Tietgen's Bridge) . One of the main arteries of Copenhagen, Vesterbrogade , crosses

1328-641: Is provided by Railjet (RJ) trains. Since 2011, there is an hourly express train service on the Western Railway operated by WESTbahn , the only long-distance competitor of the ÖBB. IC-Services: The InterCity service from Vienna to Salzburg is going to be expanded for an hourly service to Landeck via Innsbruck by December 2008. Also, the service from Vienna to Graz is going to operate hourly by December 2008. The IC44 and IC45 trains stop at Bratislava-Petržalka, Bratislava-Nové Mesto, Bratislava Hlavná Stanica, Trnava, Žilina, Poprad, and Kysak; it takes 6:22h for

1411-474: Is surrounded by the historic hotels Hotel Plaza , Hotel Astoria from 1935, and Hotel Royal from 1960, designed by Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen . To the west of the station starts Istedgade , which developed into an entertainment , and red light district after the station opened, but has undergone a partial gentrification process in later years. The station building has entrances from Bernstorffsgade, Banegårdspladsen and Reventlowsgade, and

1494-495: Is the main railway station in Copenhagen, Denmark , and the largest railway station in Denmark. With more than 100,000 travellers every day, it is the second busiest station in Denmark after Nørreport station . It is located in central Copenhagen, situated between the districts of Indre By and Vesterbro with entrances from Bernstorffsgade (opposite Tivoli Gardens ), Banegårdspladsen , Reventlowsgade and access to platforms from Tietgensgade . Copenhagen Central Station

It offers International Train services to Sweden and Germany, InterCity and Express train services across Denmark, regular and frequent regional train services to and from Zealand and southern Sweden (also referred to as Øresund trains ), commuter rail services of the Copenhagen S-train network across

1660-667: The Bpmz 291 , were built for InterCity services, which at first were using the TEE colour scheme. In 1985, with many of the TEE trains gone and the introduction of the InterRegio , the network was expanded again, now covering virtually any major city of then- West Germany . It faced further changes after the German reunification and the introduction of the InterCityExpress in the early 1990s. Today, after

1743-640: The De Dietrich Ferroviaire rolling stock in 1997. This, coupled with the subsequent withdrawal of most coaching stock bearing the logo and the rebrand to the Translink name, means that the InterCity brand has largely disappeared from Northern Ireland Railways. In Italy , InterCity trains constitute a capillary network that links the main cities across the peninsula. There were over 80-day (InterCity Sun) and night (InterCity Notte) services. Things changed with

1826-763: The Department for Transport . In West Germany, the Deutsche Bundesbahn first used the name (then written Intercity ) in 1968, denoting special first-class services on the F-Zug train network. Many of the Class VT 11.5 diesel multiple units formerly used on the TEE network were converted for early Intercity services. In Switzerland, the InterCity brand replaced SwissExpress in the 1982 schedule. In Norway, intercity (later also written InterCity ) trains were introduced in 1975 on

1909-475: The Dublin Suburban Rail network. Today the brand encompasses services between Dublin and Cork , Galway , Limerick , Tralee , Waterford , Sligo , Westport , Rosslare Europort , Ballina , and Ennis , as well as some regional services. A new InterCity logo was introduced in 2006, though the vast majority of rolling stock bore the original script logo and orange-tan livery until the final Mark 3 set

1992-777: The F-line stop at the station. From 29 September 2019 the Central station is also served by the Copenhagen Metro network's line M3 (in service 24/7), which is a circular line with 17 stations. The station is also served by the M4 line, linking the Nordhavn and Sydhavn districts and serve as an interchange between the Sydhavn extension and the M3. Long-distance buses stop at Ingerslevsgade near track 12 just south of

2075-477: The Greater Copenhagen area, as well as lines M3 ( City Circle Line ) & M4 of the Copenhagen Metro network. The first station in Copenhagen opened in 1847. The current station building opened in 1911 and is the work of architect Heinrich Wenck . The station has 7 platforms and 13 tracks. On the station concourse there are many small shops, restaurants, cafés, and fast food outlets. The central station

2158-740: The IC3 yet. It is now planned to give the IC3 stock a 10-year life extension, and to eventually scrap IC4 trains, due to the plague of poor reliability. IR4 stock (Electric version of IC3 ) will release IC3 stock from the Esbjerg Line, allowing some IC3 trains to replace IC4 trains. In Finland, VR has operated InterCity trains between major Finnish cities since August 1988. The first routes were Helsinki–Vaasa and Helsinki–Imatra, which later expanded to all major cities and include for instance Helsinki–Tampere–Oulu–Rovaniemi, Helsinki–Turku, Helsinki–Iisalmi and Helsinki–Joensuu. InterCity trains have become

2241-519: The Klampenborg Line to Klampenborg . The new railway station was located a little north of the location of the old one, on the other side of Vesterbrogade . The station building was located approximately where the Palads Cinema and Axelborg lie today, but it was part of a larger facility, as there was a freight station in the same area. Together with track areas, depots , and turntables ,

2324-554: The Nijmegen to Den Helder intercity runs as regular intercity until Alkmaar, serving larger stations only, but running as local train between Alkmaar and Den Helder, serving all intermediate stations. The average distance between station is shorter than most IC trains in most other countries, but frequencies are higher. All lines are served at least with 2tph, but many busy stretches are served have 4tph. From Utrecht Central there are even two different services to Amsterdam, one that serves

2407-460: The Tietgensgade bridge. All public transport within Greater Copenhagen are divided into close to 100 ticket fare zones. The Central station is located in fare zone 1, which together with zones 2 and 3 constitute Copenhagen municipality and the "enclave" of Frederiksberg municipality. As the cheapest single ticket always is valid in two zones, a single ticket bought at the station is valid within

2490-460: The central station and two others and another that serves the south station and the airport . From December 2017 the frequency between Amsterdam, Utrecht and Eindhoven will be further increased to 6tph. Rolling stock used mostly for intercity services in the Netherlands is VIRM . DD-AR trains have been converted to be used as New Intercity Double deckers and have been introduced to parts of

2573-677: The Austrian borders (named ÖBB-EuroCity until 2011). Modernised stock of Eurofima coaches is used under the brand name ÖBB-InterCity (OIC) mainly on the Austrian Western and Southern Railways from Vienna to Salzburg and Villach . The ÖBB also deployed electric multiple unit trains, from 2006 also three ICE T (Class 411, named ÖBB 4011 ) trainsets in cooperation with the Deutsche Bahn , currently running from Vienna to Frankfurt via Linz and Passau . ÖBB high-speed rail service

In 1955, the cinema was comprehensively renovated under the supervision of Holger Pind with new ventilation, carpeting, seating, rosewood wall panelling and the installation of a CinemaScope screen 12 m (39 ft) wide. In the mid-1970s, the cinema suffered from diminishing audiences threatening its viability. Drawing on

2739-455: The Danish composer Hans Christian Lumbye composed the still popular Copenhagen Steam Railway Galop , a musical composition which faithfully recreates the sounds of a train chugging out of a station and grinding to a halt at the next stop. The Danish author Hans Christian Andersen was also very enthusiastic about the first railway and wrote that driving a train was like flying. The station

2822-615: The InterCity trains are the EuroCity (EC) trains which consist of high-standard coaches and are run by a variety of operators. The Inter-City Rapid Transit Company was an Ohio interurban company, which began operations in 1930 as it had purchased its route from the Northern Ohio Traction & Light Company. It remained in operation till 1940. The use of Inter-City was reborn in the United Kingdom: A daily train of that name

2905-892: The Intercity trains provide a more economical means of long-distance rail travel within Italy. The night trains ( Intercity Notte ICN) have sleeper compartments and washrooms, but no showers on board (available only for Excelsior carriages ). Main routes are Rome to Bolzano /Bozen (calling at Florence, Bologna, Verona , Rovereto and Trento ), Milan to Lecce (calling at Piacenza, Parma, Reggio Emilia, Modena, Bologna, Faenza, Forlì, Cesena, Rimini, Ancona, Pescara, Bari and Brindisi), Turin to Lecce (calling at Alessandria , Voghera , Piacenza , Parma, Bologna, Rimini, Pescara, Termoli, San Severo,Foggia, Barletta, Bisceglie, Molfetta, Bari, Monopoli, Fasano, Ostuni and Brindisi) and Reggio di Calabria to Turin (calling at Naples, Rome, Livorno , La Spezia and Genova). Most portions of these ICN services run during

2988-720: The Klampenborg station opened for the Klampenborg Line, and the name of the old Klampenborg station was changed to the North station. And in 1896 a separate station for trains to Holte on the North Line, the Holte station, was opened just to the north of the North station. The station building was designed by the architect Johan Daniel Herholdt in the Rundbogenstil that now became popular in

3071-573: The Vestfold Line (the Oslo - Skien service), later also on the Østfold Line (Oslo- Halden ). They were (relatively) fast trains on distances up to 2–3 hours. Today, the name is used not on the trains, but on the main lines from Oslo to Skien, Lillehammer , and Halden – and also on the Ringerike Line, which is under construction from Oslo to Hønefoss. An international variant of InterCity, EuroCity (EC),

3154-596: The abolition of the InterRegio in 2002, most long-distance connections in Germany are either IC or ICE trains; they most commonly offer at least bi-hourly service. Maximum speed for an IC is 200 km/h. In Greece , InterCity trains operated by Italian government-owned Hellenic Train run in the following routes: In Hungary the first InterCity train departed in 1991, since then almost 10 million people use these trains every year. Since then almost 250 InterCity trains operate in

3237-595: The architecture of the Germanic world . After the dismantling of fortifications of Copenhagen and the abandonment of the demarcation line in 1856, the building could be constructed in red brick. It consisted of two 25-span buildings connected by a wooden arch crowned by a large slate roof. Four tracks passed through the hall. The departure side was by the current Axeltorv , and on this side there were offices, luggage expedition and waiting rooms . The waiting rooms were divided into 1st , 2nd and 3rd class . Further on there

3320-612: The country. Intercity train services in Hungary: The Hungarian intercity trains are operated by MÁV-START, the Hungarian railway company. In the Republic of Ireland , Iarnród Éireann introduced the brand name InterCity in 1984, replacing the previous name of Mainline , which had been introduced in 1976. Initially applied to services operated by British Rail Mark 3 trains, it was later extended to include all services not part of

A special ticket fare system exists between the Copenhagen local traffic area and the most southern part of Sweden, Skåne county. The station needs more capacity following the opening of the Copenhagen–Ringsted Line on 31 May 2019. The Danish Ministry of Transport has started planning of an extension: proposals include

3569-589: The experience of the Marignan Concorde cinema in Paris which had been divided up into six auditoriums, the Palads was restructured into 12 auditoriums in 1978. Despite general scepticism, the alterations proved a huge success attracting 57,921 visitors in just one week. In September 1979, a further five auditoriums were opened in the basement. The interior was redecorated throughout in blue and grey with red seating. In 1989,

3652-908: The following routes: Most of the IC are served by trains of state-owned operator České dráhy with speeds up to 160 km/h but they have been converted into category Express in 2012 timetable. The other is served by trains of private operator RegioJet with speed up to 160 km/h. No surcharge is applied to IC trains but RegioJet runs reservation compulsory trains. Third private passenger operator LEO Express introduced express InterCity train service between Prague and Ostrava in November 2012, with speeds up to 160 km/h. The state-owned operator České dráhy also serves line Prague – Ostrava (with some connections extended to Bohumín and Františkovy Lázně ) with Pendolino trainsets under designation " SuperCity ", which conforms to IC standard. A compulsory reservation

3735-400: The grounds of the former Nørrebro Station . Matters were made worse from the fact that the tracks had several level crossings on the way out of the city, which with the steadily increasing train traffic led to frequent blockages for the equally steadily increasing road traffic when the barriers were down. By the end of the 19th century, it had become increasingly clear that the conditions at

3818-550: The intercity network. Also, older ICM (formerly known as Koploper) EMUs are frequently seen on intercity routes. ICRm coaches , pulled by a TRAXX locomotive, can be seen on international stretches and the Intercity Direct . In Poland IC trains operated by PKP Intercity S.A. up to 2009 served the following routes: Apart from a single railway line (line nr 4, a.k.a. Centralna Magistrala Kolejowa –Central Railway Route), average speeds are much lower. These trains mostly use

3984-400: The locomotive named Eurosprinter (EU44), EP09 , sometimes EP08 . In 2009 IC category was renamed Express InterCity ( EIC ). Since December 2014 IC trains are regular express and fast trains (with pricing offers like TLK fast trains), also operated by PKP Intercity, mainly utilizing high-standard Pesa Dart (ED161) and Stadler FLIRT (ED160) electric multiple units . In addition to

4067-449: The lost luggage department is also used as a location later in the same film. InterCity InterCity (commonly abbreviated IC on timetables and tickets) is the classification applied to certain long-distance passenger train services in Europe. Such trains (in contrast to regional, local, or commuter trains) generally call at major stations only. An international variant of

4150-523: The main station building is placed, were reconditioned. The station was designed by Danish architect Heinrich Wenck , who was head architect of the Danish State Railways from 1894 to 1921. The creation of the station project proved to be difficult. In the years 1898–1902, Wenck prepared several proposals for a new multi-storey station building, which, however, were rejected by the Rigsdag for being unnecessarily lavish. In most of these proposals, Wenck proposed

4233-400: The network is not electrified. There are also electrical IC trains run by IR4s in an hourly schedule from Copenhagen westwards to Odense and alternately Esbjerg / Sønderborg . This means during most of the day there are three trains an hour between Copenhagen and Odense. Quite unusual in the world, some trains will consist of both electrically and diesel-powered units coupled together. Being

The old station could thus finally be permanently closed. The station

4399-481: The night; since most services take 10 to 15 hours to complete a one-way journey, their day-time portion provide extra train connections to complement with the Intercity services. There are a total of 86 intercity trains running within Italy per day. Intercity trains are very common in the Netherlands, but may differ from each other. While some intercity trains call only at larger stations, some others may also call at smaller stations or at all intermediate stations along

Speeds were up to 160 km/h between Slavonski Brod and Vinkovci . Line Zagreb – Split served by tilting trains is designated as InterCity Nagibni (ICN). In the Czech Republic , the IC or Express trains service

4565-457: The only option for long-distance and some short-distance travel, there is no surcharge for IC and Lyntog. They have a maximum speed of 180 km/h. Additionally, there are a few IR trains during Friday and Sunday peak hours between Copenhagen and Århus. These are locomotive-run and have bilevel cars . The IC3 trains are planned to be replaced by new IC4 trains, originally in 2001. They first ran with passengers in 2008, but haven't nearly replaced

4648-814: The opening of high-speed lines and the mixed public-private service. With the introduction of high-speed trains, intercity trains are limited to few services per day on mainline and regional tracks. The daytime services ( InterCity IC), while not frequent and limited to one or two trains per route, are essential in providing access to cities and towns off the railway's mainline network. The main routes are Trieste to Rome (stopping at Venice , Bologna , Prato , Florence and Arezzo ), Milan to Rome (stopping at Genoa , La Spezia , Pisa and Livorno / stopping at Parma , Modena , Bologna, Prato, Florence and Arezzo), Bologna to Lecce (stopping at Rimini , Ancona , Pescara , Bari and Brindisi ) and Rome to Reggio di Calabria (stopping at Latina and Naples ). 4980-467: The second railway station had become too narrow and outdated. Already from the end of the 1870s, it was discussed how to solve these problems with Copenhagen's railway connections. After many years of discussions, the Rigsdag , Denmark's parliament finally decided in 1904 to build a brand new railway station, approximately at the location of the first station. The new station was to be a through station with

5063-538: The standard as the Finnish long-distance rail travel mainstay, and their predecessors, blue-carriaged express trains, are being withdrawn off the schedules. The train tickets include an additional surcharge compared to ordinary express trains: 17 to 27% depending on journey length. VR operates both ordinary InterCity trains (IC) and entirely double-decker trains (IC²). An ordinary IC train usually consists of 3 to 4 double-decker cars and 3 to 5 ordinary IC cars. In addition

5229-450: The then-new Class 103 locomotives. Trains ran bi-hourly. DB paid a royalty fee to BR for many years for the use of the brand name . In 1978, it was decided to expand the IC network to services with both first and second class, and so the new scheme, called IC '79 was launched in 1979 with the motto "Jede Stunde, jede Klasse" ("every hour, every class") to emphasize its new structure. Large numbers of air-conditioned open coach cars,

The new station was opened on 30 November 1911 by Crown Prince Christian , who stated: It will probably stand as

5395-502: The train has a restaurant car. IC² trains consist only of double-decker cars and have no separate restaurant car with a sales trolley moving about in the train. However, due to high demand, VR ordered double-decker restaurant cars from Transtech in early 2011. The first carriages became operational in 2013. All IC-trains are smoke-free. The trains run at a maximum speed of 140–160 km/h for single-decker trains and up to 200 kilometres per hour (120 mph) for double-deckers, which

5478-405: The typical railway arched roof. This roof is shorter than the platforms, but all tracks remain below street level and can also be accessed from the street Tietgensgade . The single spare track, called track 26, was initially built for trains to southern Sweden, while Malmö C still

5561-704: The whole journey. InterCity stops in Austria: InterCity trains link all major cities of Belgium. Some of them serve also destinations outside the country. The IC between Liège and Brussels travels at 200 km/h on the HSL 2 . However, because of the density of the train network with many connecting lines and the many small- and medium-sized cities in Belgium, most IC services also call at smaller stations or continue as local trains on branch lines. As of 2024, there are two InterCity services: The coaches used are similar to

The building has been used as a location in the films Man elsker kun een gang (1945) and Olsen-banden går amok (1973). At the end of The Palads Building, Axeltorv 5, has since the 70s housed various nightclubs, outstanding was the Daddy's Dance Hall, which from 1975 to 1978

5727-453: Was VR's aim in 1988. Only the Pendolino and Allegro trains are faster than InterCity trains in Finland. In 2006, the SNCF rebranded Corail, Téoz and Lunéa services as ' Intercités ', a brand for all of their 'classic' services day and night. In Germany, the InterCity network was launched in 1971 to accompany and eventually replace the Trans Europ Express trains. At first, IC services were first-class only, often using TEE stock and

5810-404: Was a royal waiting room and then toilets. As the volume of traffic increased, a special freight forwarding building was added. In the long run, however, this second station also became too cramped, especially because it was a terminal station with only one track leading out of the city which had to cross the lakes of Copenhagen on a narrow dam along Gyldenløvesgade . On the other side of

5893-518: Was a live music venue, distinctive for their line in the music program were two concerts with the Sex Pistols in 1977. 55°40′35″N 12°33′48″E / 55.67639°N 12.56333°E / 55.67639; 12.56333 Copenhagen Central Station Copenhagen Central Station ( Danish : Københavns Hovedbanegård , pronounced [kʰøpm̩ˈhɑwns ˈhoːð̩pɛnəˌkɒˀ] ; abbreviated København H , colloquially usually referred to as Hovedbanegården or simply Hovedbanen )

5976-427: Was a terminus. It has later been used for express trains to or from Sweden or to or from Norway . After the introduction of border controls and mandatory identity checks for travel to Sweden this track was fenced and used for X2000 and intercity trains to Sweden. The extra track 26 is located 200 metres (660 ft) south of the main building and is reachable only by walking along the platform for track 4 and 5 or from

6059-507: Was abandoned due to opposition from the Rigsdag , Denmark's parliament. In the end, it was decided to replace the old station and build a new larger station near the location of the old one. The construction started in 1863 and the station opened on 14 October 1864. As planned, the new railway station was also to service the new northbound railway lines that opened the year before, the North Line to Hillerød and Elsinore and its branch line ,

6142-416: Was constructed of wood as it was built outside the city's fortifications within the demarcation line , a no-build zone outside the ramparts where brick buildings were not allowed for military reasons. In case of war, the army should be able to burn buildings in the firing range outside the ramparts. This railway station and the still existing Roskilde station (which is built in brick) are both linked to

6225-412: Was demolished in 1865. In the 1860s, there were several plans to expand the railway network in Denmark , and in particular to connect a northbound line to North Zealand with the existing westbound line to Roskilde and the rest of Zealand . As a consequence, an expansion of the old station became necessary. A proposal to build a new station close to the old Nørreport ( Northern Gate ) city gate

6308-662: Was introduced in 1950, running between the cities of London and Birmingham . This usage can claim to be the origin of all later usages worldwide. In 1966 British Rail introduced the brand InterCity for all of its express train routes, and in 1986 the term was adopted by the InterCity sector of British Rail . Following the privatisation of the railways in Great Britain, the term is no longer in official use there although many people still refer to fast long-distance services as InterCity trains. The brand still exists though, and belongs to

6391-890: Was introduced in May 1987. EuroCity trains consist of high-standard, air conditioned coaches, are run by a variety of operators, and are usually subject to on-board border controls. For example, EuroCity trains running in Germany can be made up by rolling stock of either the SBB (Switzerland), ÖBB (Austria), SNCF (France), and less commonly by stock of the Czech ČD and Hungarian MÁV railways. The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) have operated IC services since 1991. However, contrary to most other countries, these are often little more than regional rail , as most long-distance, high-standard trains in Austria are likely to be EuroCity (EC) services, even when not leaving

6474-562: Was located at the site of Dronningens Enghave ( the Queen's Meadow Garden ), a former royal pleasure garden located just outside the Vesterport ( Western Gate ) city gate of Copenhagen. The first station was located approximately at the site of the current station, but the tracks were perpendicular to their current direction, as the railway line then left the city along the current streets Halmtorvet and Sønder Boulevard . The station building

6557-424: Was not opened until 1917, the new station was initially only served by trains on the westbound lines, and the old station continued to serve the trains on the northbound lines for a period. With the opening of the first double track of the Boulevard line on 1 December 1917, the direct connection with Østerport station was established. Now trains along the line from Copenhagen to Elsinore could continue directly to

6640-399: Was one of the most well-versed architects of this Italian style, just as he had insight into wood construction from his assignments at Tivoli. For both station buildings, a motif with two towers without spires is a central part of the composition (the towers at Roskilde station were crowned by a balustrade until 1873, when they were covered by pyramid roofs ). The first station building

6723-418: Was overhauled in 1980. Escalators and lifts were established to the platforms, and the station concourse, which was originally split into arrival, departure, and freight sections, was redone completely. The station was overhauled again from 2004 to 2008. This overhaul replaced the roof, lowered platforms 3 to 6 to international standards and lengthened them. The towers and the bridge over the platforms, upon which

The station has 7 platforms and 13 tracks. The platforms begin under the main passenger hall (and at least the S-train section, two platforms with

6889-447: Was withdrawn in 2009. Since Ireland completed its replacement of the old Mark 2 and Mark 3 stock in 2012, it has one of the most modern InterCity fleets in the world. Northern Ireland Railways and Iarnród Éireann both formerly operated trains on the Dublin – Belfast line under the InterCity brand, however this was replaced with the revived Enterprise brand name upon the introduction of
