101-576: Much of the album was written in a single night, following a hallucinatory nightmare Marshall experienced while staying at a farmhouse in South Carolina. Prior to that, Marshall had intended to retire from music. The album was recorded in Melbourne , Australia with Mick Turner and Jim White , of the Australian instrumental band Dirty Three , on guitar and drums, respectively. Released to modest acclaim,

202-585: A Soul" is about and contains an interpolation of the Palace Brothers song "You Will Miss Me When I Burn". In 2009 Mark Lanegan and Soulsavers recorded a cover version of "You Will Miss Me When I Burn". The release is a split single, backed with the Lanegan-penned "Sunrise" featuring vocals by Oldham. In 2011, Deer Tick 's cover of Oldham's song "Death to Everyone" appeared in an episode of Hell On Wheels . Cadaverous Condition covered "Black" on their To

303-583: A brief role in the director's next film Wendy and Lucy (2008). Oldham played Pastor Pigmeat in the "Horse Apples" episode of the second season of the MTV children's show parody Wonder Showzen and appeared in an episode of Chatman and Lee's subsequent television show, Xavier: Renegade Angel as a Reverend. In 2007, he starred alongside Zach Galifianakis in a music video for Kanye West 's " Can't Tell Me Nothing ". Also in 2010, Oldham appeared in Jackass 3D as

404-604: A call that her friend had died. Later that night, she heard that another friend of hers had died the same day. "So that's when I woke up," Marshall recalled. "I was like, you know what? What am I doing?" With the cassette of the songs recorded the night of her episode still in her possession, Marshall decided to fax Turner and White, whose band the Dirty Three she had played shows with, and asked if they wanted to record. She asked her record label, Matador, for money to travel to Australia, and spent three months there "hanging out and having

505-446: A crime that has been committed, often homicides. In essence, it is a voice that one hears and it tells the listener what to do. Sometimes the commands are quite benign directives such as "Stand up" or "Shut the door." Whether it is a command for something simple or something that is a threat, it is still considered a "command hallucination." Some helpful questions that can assist one in determining if they may have this includes: "What are

606-477: A dissociative. These drugs also can induce sleep (relating to hypnagogic hallucinations) and especially the pethidines have atropine-like anticholinergic activity, which was possibly also a limiting factor in the use, the psychotomimetic side effects of potentiating morphine, oxycodone , and other opioids with scopolamine (respectively in the Twilight Sleep technique and the combination drug Skophedal, which

707-509: A documentary film about atomic weapons, directed by Swedish artist Magnus Bärtås . In 2010, Oldham narrated Music Makes a City , a documentary about the formation of the Louisville Orchestra , directed by Owsley Brown III and Jerome Hiler . Oldham provided voice work and inspiration for the character "Will" in the video game Kentucky Route Zero , released in 2013. Oldham married the textile artist Elsa Hansen in 2016. They had

808-419: A giraffe. A simple visual hallucination is an amorphous figure that may have a similar shape or color to a giraffe ( looks like a giraffe), while a complex visual hallucination is a discrete, lifelike image that is , unmistakably, a giraffe. Command hallucinations are hallucinations in the form of commands; they appear to be from an external source, or can appear coming from the subject's head. The contents of

909-491: A gorilla trainer. As part of an agreement to play that role, he wrote a theme song, in the style of a Saturday-morning cartoon show, for filmmaker Lance Bangs . In 2011, Oldham played a father telling a bedtime story to his son in David Lowery's short film Pioneer . In 2017, he appeared as "Prognosticator" in the feature film A Ghost Story , also directed by David Lowery. In 2009, Oldham narrated Madam and Little Boy ,

1010-401: A great time" until being told by White that Turner would be leaving Australia in two days, at which point they entered the studio to record the album. "Stepping into Australia was stepping into something more positive and triumphant as a young woman," Marshall explained in a 2018 Guardian article. "I was, on purpose, choosing a path out of solitude. I found joy I had never felt; some part of

1111-461: A life of its own. Bonnie Prince Charlie has such a beautiful ring to it, and I was very conscious of appropriating that mellifluous sound. And I was also thinking about the name Nat King Cole . But it wasn't until later, and this may have been subconscious, that I remembered that Billy the Kid was William Bonney or Billy Bonney. He has explained that "the primary purpose of the pseudonym is to allow both

1212-449: A minor breakthrough on its release in 1998," but "perhaps because it remained unhobbled by praise and expectation, Moon Pix grew in stature in the ensuing twenty years." Looking back at the album in May 2018, Marshall told The Guardian , "It makes me feel good and very humbled, how many people have told me Moon Pix was important to them for personal reasons. It's beautiful...To me Moon Pix

1313-463: A number of factors. These hallucinations occur just before falling asleep and affect a high proportion of the population: in one survey 37% of the respondents experienced them twice a week. The hallucinations can last from seconds to minutes; all the while, the subject usually remains aware of the true nature of the images. These may be associated with narcolepsy . Hypnagogic hallucinations are sometimes associated with brainstem abnormalities, but this

1414-454: A panic]. Then they came, thousands of them, all up against the kitchen window. They were clear, black as night, trying to get into my soul. That’s when I grabbed my acoustic guitar. I thought that if people found my body, I needed to leave a tape. So I just played the songs that became Moon Pix . It was horrifying.” About two days before Marshall's nightmare, she had received a call from a friend who had challenged her to record something new. "He

1515-463: A person in a state of good mental and physical health, even in the apparent absence of a transient trigger factor such as fatigue , intoxication or sensory deprivation . The evidence for this statement has been accumulating for more than a century. Studies of benign hallucinatory experiences go back to 1886 and the early work of the Society for Psychical Research , which suggested approximately 10% of

1616-557: A psychologist or psychiatrist should be consulted, and treatment will be based on the observations of those doctors. Antipsychotic and atypical antipsychotic medication may also be utilized to treat the illness if the symptoms are severe and cause significant distress. For other causes of hallucinations there is no factual evidence to support any one treatment is scientifically tested and proven. However, abstaining from hallucinogenic drugs, stimulant drugs, managing stress levels, living healthily, and getting plenty of sleep can help reduce

1717-495: A reality/documentary series, with the concept being that Zahedi would take psychedelics in the company of a different celebrity in each episode. The project was never picked up by a television network, but the short with Oldham finally saw official release in the 2015 retrospective box set Digging My Own Grave: The Films of Caveh Zahedi . Oldham played a lead role as Kurt in Kelly Reichardt 's film Old Joy (2006), and had

1818-613: A sense that surfaces such as ceilings and even entire horizons are moving farther away in a fashion similar to the dolly zoom effect , and other illusions. Even when consciousness is impaired, insight into the hallucination or illusion is typically preserved. Drug-induced hallucinations are caused by hallucinogens , dissociatives , and deliriants , including many drugs with anticholinergic actions and certain stimulants, which are known to cause visual and auditory hallucinations. Some psychedelics such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and psilocybin can cause hallucinations that range in

1919-496: A single individual person of one or more talking voices is particularly associated with psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia , and hold special significance in diagnosing these conditions. In schizophrenia, voices are normally perceived coming from outside the person, but in dissociative disorders they are perceived as originating from within the person, commenting in their head instead of behind their back. Differential diagnosis between schizophrenia and dissociative disorders

2020-452: A single take. "She was fucking great," Marshall remembered, "she was so amazing." The thunder samples on "Say" were Marshall's idea, and taken from one of the studio's sample library CD. As Voight recounted, "we laid some thunder all over the song and then mixed in the bits that we thought were appropriate." The album's only piano-driven song, "Colors and the Kids," was recorded spontaneously near

2121-541: A standing ovation at the end of the performance. The show also featured a small string section arranged by Australian musician Ned Collette . All tracks are written by Chan Marshall, unless noted Hallucination A hallucination is a perception in the absence of an external stimulus that has the compelling sense of reality. They are distinguishable from several related phenomena , such as dreaming ( REM sleep ), which does not involve wakefulness; pseudohallucination , which does not mimic real perception, and

2222-470: A symptom of certain mental disorders such as depression , bipolar disorder , intoxication, substance withdrawal , or psychotic disorders (e.g., schizophrenia ). The perceived odors are usually unpleasant and commonly described as smelling burned, foul, spoiled, or rotten. Tactile hallucinations are the illusion of tactile sensory input, simulating various types of pressure to the skin or other organs. One subtype of tactile hallucination, formication ,

2323-405: A trip to Georgia. As Marshall later recalled, "I remember being so happy to be with [Ethridge]. That connection with Atlanta, and he was sweet and funny. I remember feeling safe. He took one picture and I almost blacked out. Not black, though, nothing but light. I had some mystical experiences around this time. I lay down in the floor and couldn't see. We looked at the pictures and that was it. That

2424-543: A version of "I See a Darkness" for her debut album Los Ángeles . Marianne Faithfull included Oldham's "A King at Night" on her 2003 Kissin Time tour. Steve Adey also covered "I See a Darkness" on his 2006 LP All Things Real . Mark Kozelek recorded a version of Oldham's "New Partner" on his 2008 disc, The Finally LP . Katatonia covered "Oh How I Enjoy the Light" on their 2001 EP Tonight's Music , and their song "Don't Tell

2525-443: A vision, woke up and could feel something beyond the trees outside my window. Then I heard a voice: ‘Chan, come and meet me outside and all the past will be forgotten.’ I remember sitting up in bed and saying ‘No!’ And when I said that, I felt as if something was coming fast, straight from under the earth, these dark spirits. I know that sounds completely insane. So I sprung out of bed and rushed into every room [mimes shutting windows in

2626-490: A younger self or the present self, and tend to be briefly present. Complex hallucinations are a relatively uncommon finding in temporal lobe epilepsy patients. Rarely, they may occur during occipital focal seizures or in parietal lobe seizures. Distortions in visual perception during a temporal lobe seizure may include size distortion ( micropsia or macropsia ), distorted perception of movement (where moving objects may appear to be moving very slowly or to be perfectly still),

2727-637: Is a great example of utilizing the knowledge and experience of voice hearers and combining it with experts in disorders such as schizophrenia, such as psychiatrists. Prevalence of hallucinations varies depending on underlying medical conditions, which sensory modalities are affected, age and culture. As of 2022, auditory hallucinations are the most well studied and most common sensory modality of hallucinations, with an estimated lifetime prevalence of 9.6%. Children and adolescents have been found to experience similar rates (12.7% and 12.4% respectively) which occur mostly during late childhood and adolescence. This

2828-697: Is accurately perceived as unreal; illusion , which involves distorted or misinterpreted real perception; and mental imagery , which does not mimic real perception, and is under voluntary control. Hallucinations also differ from " delusional perceptions", in which a correctly sensed and interpreted stimulus (i.e., a real perception) is given some additional significance. Hallucinations can occur in any sensory modality — visual , auditory , olfactory , gustatory , tactile , proprioceptive , equilibrioceptive , nociceptive , thermoceptive and chronoceptive . Hallucinations are referred to as multimodal if multiple sensory modalities occur. A mild form of hallucination

2929-518: Is an American singer-songwriter and actor. From 1993 to 1997, he performed and recorded in collaboration with dozens of other musicians under variations of Palace (Palace, Palace Brothers, Palace Songs, and Palace Music). After briefly publishing music under his own name, in 1998 he adopted Bonnie " Prince " Billy as the name for most of his work. Oldham was born on January 15, 1970, in Louisville, Kentucky . His mother, Joanne Lei Will Tafel Oldham,

3030-518: Is an elementary auditory hallucination. However, some people who experience certain types of tinnitus, especially pulsatile tinnitus, are actually hearing the blood rushing through vessels near the ear. Because the auditory stimulus is present in this situation, it does not qualify it as a hallucination. Complex hallucinations are those of voices, music, or other sounds that may or may not be clear, may or may not be familiar, and may be friendly, aggressive, or among other possibilities. A hallucination of

3131-408: Is being touched in an erogenous zone, sensing stimulation in the genitals, feeling the fondling of one's breasts or buttocks and tastes or smells related to sexual activity. Visualizations of sexual content and auditory voices making sexually explicit remarks may sometimes be included in this classification. While it features components of other classifications, sexual hallucinations are distinct due to

3232-578: Is called multimodal, analogous to unimodal hallucinations which have only one sensory modality. The multiple sensory modalities can occur at the same time (simultaneously) or with a delay (serial), be related or unrelated to each other, and be consistent with reality (congruent) or not (incongruent). For example, a person talking in a hallucination would be congruent with reality, but a cat talking would not be. Multimodal hallucinations are correlated to poorer mental health outcomes, and are often experienced as feeling more real. Hallucinations can be caused by

3333-509: Is challenging due to many overlapping symptoms, especially Schneiderian first rank symptoms such as hallucinations. However, many people who do not have a diagnosable mental illness may sometimes hear voices as well. One important example to consider when forming a differential diagnosis for a patient with paracusia is lateral temporal lobe epilepsy . Despite the tendency to associate hearing voices, or otherwise hallucinating, and psychosis with schizophrenia or other psychiatric illnesses, it

3434-400: Is compared with adults and those over 60 (with rates of 5.8% and 4.8% respectively). For those with schizophrenia, the lifetime prevalence of hallucinations is 80% and the estimated prevalence of visual hallucinations is 27%, compared to 79% for auditory hallucinations. A 2019 study suggested 16.2% of adults with hearing impairment experience hallucinations, with prevalence rising to 24% in

3535-494: Is crucial to take into consideration that, even if a person does exhibit psychotic features, they do not necessarily have a psychiatric disorder on its own. Disorders such as Wilson's disease , various endocrine diseases , numerous metabolic disturbances , multiple sclerosis , systemic lupus erythematosus , porphyria , sarcoidosis , and many others can present with psychosis. Musical hallucinations are also relatively common in terms of complex auditory hallucinations and may be

3636-486: Is falling asleep and hypnopompic hallucinations occur when one is waking up. Hallucinations can be associated with drug use (particularly deliriants ), sleep deprivation , psychosis , neurological disorders , and delirium tremens . Many hallucinations happen also during sleep paralysis . The word "hallucination" itself was introduced into the English language by the 17th-century physician Sir Thomas Browne in 1646 from

3737-457: Is gradually reduced with the progression of this disorder. Sleep is disturbed and occurs for a shorter period of time, with rapid eye movement sleep . Parkinson's disease is linked with Lewy body dementia for their similar hallucinatory symptoms. Presence hallucinations can be an early indicator of cognitive decline in Parkinson's Disease. The symptoms strike during the evening in any part of

3838-432: Is known as a disturbance , and can occur in most of the senses above. These may be things like seeing movement in peripheral vision , or hearing faint noises or voices. Auditory hallucinations are very common in schizophrenia . They may be benevolent (telling the subject good things about themselves) or malicious, cursing the subject. 55% of auditory hallucinations are malicious in content, for example, people talking about

3939-500: Is known for his " do-it-yourself punk aesthetic and blunt honesty", and his music has been likened to Americana , folk , roots , country , punk , and indie rock . He has been called an " Appalachian post-punk solipsist ", with a voice that has been described as "a fragile sort-of warble frittering around haunted melodies in the American folk or country tradition." Oldham first performed and recorded under various permutations of

4040-410: Is normally attributed to internal sources via feedforward networks to the inferior frontal gyrus, is interpreted as originating externally due to abnormal connectivity or functionality of the feedforward network. This is supported by cognitive studies of those with hallucinations, who have demonstrated abnormal attribution of self generated stimuli. Disruptions in thalamocortical circuitry may underlie

4141-442: Is rare. Peduncular means pertaining to the peduncle , which is a neural tract running to and from the pons on the brain stem . These hallucinations usually occur in the evenings, but not during drowsiness, as in the case of hypnagogic hallucination. The subject is usually fully conscious and then can interact with the hallucinatory characters for extended periods of time. As in the case of hypnagogic hallucinations , insight into

4242-430: Is real and what is not. The hallucinations can sometimes be dispersed by eye movements, or by reasoned logic such as, "I can see fire but there is no smoke and there is no heat from it" or perhaps, "We have an infestation of rats but they have pink ribbons with a bell tied on their necks." Over elapsed months and years, the hallucinations may become more or less frequent with changes in ability to see. The length of time that

4343-445: Is the name given to visual hallucinations experienced by a partially or severely sight impaired person. The hallucinations can occur at any time and can distress people of any age, as they may not initially be aware that they are hallucinating. They may fear for their own mental health initially, which may delay them sharing with carers until they start to understand it themselves. The hallucinations can frighten and disconcert as to what

4444-586: Is the sensation of insects crawling underneath the skin and is frequently associated with prolonged cocaine use. However, formication may also be the result of normal hormonal changes such as menopause , or disorders such as peripheral neuropathy , high fevers, Lyme disease , skin cancer , and more. This type of hallucination is the perception of taste without a stimulus. These hallucinations, which are typically strange or unpleasant, are relatively common among individuals who have certain types of focal epilepsy , especially temporal lobe epilepsy . The regions of

4545-462: Is thought to represent failure to gate sensory stimuli, and can be exacerbated by dopamine release agents. Abnormal assignment of salience to stimuli may be one mechanism of hallucinations. Dysfunctional dopamine signaling may lead to abnormal top down regulation of sensory processing, allowing expectations to distort sensory input. There are few treatments for many types of hallucinations. However, for those hallucinations caused by mental disease,

4646-405: Is usually associated with a degraded substantia nigra pars compacta, but recent evidence suggests that PD affects a number of sites in the brain. Some places of noted degradation include the median raphe nuclei , the noradrenergic parts of the locus coeruleus , and the cholinergic neurons in the parabrachial area and pedunculopontine nuclei of the tegmentum . This type of hallucination

4747-508: Is usually experienced during the recovery from a comatose state. The migraine coma can last for up to two days, and a state of depression is sometimes comorbid . The hallucinations occur during states of full consciousness, and insight into the hallucinatory nature of the images is preserved. It has been noted that ataxic lesions accompany the migraine coma. Migraine attacks may result in visual hallucinations including auras and in rarer cases, auditory hallucinations. Charles Bonnet syndrome

4848-606: The 33 1/3 entry on Moon Pix by Donna Kozloskie, Marshall called Ethridge, who had been a friend of hers when they both lived in Atlanta , in September or October 1998 and suggested they "take a picture," potentially for the album cover. Ethridge shot Marshall with a Polaroid Type 64 . Marshall wore a slightly oversized denim jacket from a pile of clothes in Ethridge's apartment, and posed under fake silk magnolias Ethridge had brought from

4949-557: The La Trobe University School of Psychological Sciences revealed that as few as five cups of coffee a day (approximately 500 mg of caffeine) could trigger the phenomenon. A visual hallucination is "the perception of an external visual stimulus where none exists". A separate but related phenomenon is a visual illusion , which is a distortion of a real external stimulus. Visual hallucinations are classified as simple or complex: For example, one may report hallucinating

5050-498: The hippocampus and amygdala are connected. Limited studies have been done to understand the mechanism of action behind sexual hallucinations in epilepsy , substance use , and post-traumatic stress disorder etiologies. Somatic hallucinations refer to an interoceptive sensory experience in the absence of stimulus. Somatic hallucinations can be broken down into further subcategories: general, algesic, kinesthetic, and cenesthopathic. A hallucination involving sensory modalities

5151-541: The pentazocine , levorphanol , fentanyl , pethidine , methadone and some other families are more associated with this side effect than natural opioids like morphine and codeine and semi-synthetics like hydromorphone , amongst which there also appears to be a stronger correlation with the relative analgesic strength. Three opioids, Cyclazocine (a benzormorphan opioid/pentazocine relative) and two levorphanol-related morphinan opioids, Cyclorphan and Dextrorphan are classified as hallucinogens, and Dextromethorphan as

They are usually unilateral and localized to one part of the visual field on the contralateral side of the seizure focus, typically the temporal field . However, unilateral visions moving horizontally across the visual field begin on the contralateral side and move toward the ipsilateral side. Temporal lobe seizures , on

5353-492: The 1986 Beastie Boys song, " Paul Revere ." According to Voigt, Marshall appeared with a copy of the song on album in her bag, and requested a "backwards drum beat," which Marshall then recorded on top of. The sample is uncredited on Moon Pix . Voigt recalls that Marshall was "a lovely lady. Very emotional. We would do takes and she'd just start crying in the middle of a take. And she'd say 'Stop, stop, I'm sorry, I'm sorry' and I'm like "'It sounded great!'" According to Voigt,

5454-453: The Dirty Three members joined the studio most likely on the second day. White played drums over vocals and guitar already recorded by Marshall, while all three musicians recorded two songs live with bassist Andrew Entsch on double bass . In a 1998 interview with Marcus Maida for Hotel Discipline , Marshall recalled that Turner was late to the studio, which led to "American Flag" being worked on for an estimated five hours, becoming by default

5555-630: The Minutemen , Squirrel Bait , Sonic Youth and Slint . On May 31, 2018, Marshall reunited with Turner, White and Woods to perform a show celebrating the album's 20th anniversary, as part of Vivid LIVE 2018, at the Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia . The performance, described by Vice as "damn-near flawless," featured the band performing the album in full, along with later material such as " I Don't Blame You " and "The Greatest." Marshall received

5656-636: The Night Sky album (2006). Oldham's first film acting role was as the teen preacher in John Sayles 's film Matewan (1987), a dramatization of the life of Appalachian mining community in the 1920s and the Battle of Matewan . Following this, he moved to Hollywood to pursue a career as an actor. He played the role of Chip McClure (father of Baby Jessica ) in Everybody's Baby: The Rescue of Jessica McClure (1989), and

5757-552: The Palace name, including Palace Brothers, Palace Songs, Palace Music, and simply Palace. Regarding the name changes during this period (1993–1997), Oldham said: I guess the idea is that when you have a name of a group or an artist, then you expect that the next record, if it has the same name, should be the same group of people playing on it. And I just thought we were making a different kind of record each time, with different people, and different themes, and different sounds. So I thought it

5858-812: The album five stars in The Rolling Stone Album Guide , and called it "even stronger" than her previous album, What Would the Community Think . Lisa Lagace of NPR called Moon Pix "a note-perfect album that turns inward, filled with songs that express what it means to be deeply, inexplicably melancholy," and wrote that "it will continue to work its magic, healing metal hearts, for generations to come." In 2018, Pitchfork ranked Moon Pix at number six on its list of "The 50 Best Albums of 1998," with Matthew Schnipper calling it "as powerful as indie gets, bar none." The same year, Scott Wallace of The Sydney Scoop noted that " Moon Pix only registered as

5959-528: The album has since been described as Cat Power's " magnum opus " and "one of the Nineties great singer/songwriter triumphs." In 2022, it was ranked at number 66 in Pitchfork's "The 150 Best Albums of the 1990s" list. Several songs on Moon Pix — "No Sense," "Say," "Metal Heart," "You May Know Him" and " Cross Bones Style "— were written "in one deranged night," following a hallucinatory nightmare Marshall had in

6060-411: The album started the day after New Year's in 1998, with Marshall arriving with her guitar and asking Voigt how he wanted to set up for recording. Most of the songs were recorded with Marshall singing and playing guitar at the same time, with Marshall and a microphone in one room and a small guitar amplifier in another. The album's opener, "American Flag," features a slowed-down reversed drum sample from

6161-425: The album was "odd but well worth investigating." Moon Pix has retrospectively been praised as a key album of 1990s indie rock , and cited as evidence of Marshall's maturation as a songwriter. In a four-and-a-half star review, Heather Phares of AllMusic wrote that it "continues Chan Marshall's transformation from an indie rock Cassandra into a reflective, accomplished singer/songwriter." Rob Sheffield awarded

6262-407: The album's most "produced" song. Upon Turner's arrival, the band recorded "Metal Heart," " Moonshiner ," "Say" and "No Sense," after which Turner left. They were soon joined by Belinda Woods, who added flute to "He Turns Down." Marshall recalled encouraging Woods, who had never heard her music, to stop "holding back" after hearing her initial attempts, after which she delivered the master performance in

6363-408: The album's score to 9.5 with a new review by Jayson Greene, who wrote that "sometimes an artist makes something dangerously potent, a piece of work with a mood so thick that it demands an explanation. Moon Pix is undoubtedly that album for Cat Power." In 2022, the website ranked Moon Pix at number 66 in their list of "The 150 Best Albums of the 1990s", comparing its sound to "a summer thunderstorm in

6464-497: The audience and the performer to have a relationship with the performer that is valid and unbreakable." Some of his albums, such as There Is No-One What Will Take Care of You (1993), Viva Last Blues (1995), and I See a Darkness (1999), have appeared on greatest albums lists. Johnny Cash recorded a version of "I See a Darkness" on his American Recordings disc American III: Solitary Man (2000). Oldham provided backing vocals. Spanish singer Rosalía also recorded

6565-463: The brain responsible for gustatory hallucination in this case are the insula and the superior bank of the sylvian fissure . Sexual hallucinations are the perception of erogenous or orgasmic stimuli. They may be unimodal or multimodal in nature and frequently involve sensation in the genital region, though it is not exclusive. Frequent examples of sexual hallucinations include the sensation of being penetrated, experiencing orgasm, feeling as if one

6666-535: The contrary, actually-- it's way too interesting." Gail O'Hara of Time Out New York described Moon Pix as "the record Marshall's admirers knew she had in her," and wrote that "what makes this album so dazzling is the focus of Marshall's melancholic songwriting and her gripping vocals that flutter, whisper and even howl." Jonathan Trew of The List wrote that "Marshall's voice seems to come from some other dimension, it hangs and it haunts, inhabiting an oft sparse terrain of faintly country-ish hue," and declared that

6767-516: The derivation of the Latin word alucinari meaning to wander in the mind. For Browne, hallucination means a sort of vision that is "depraved and receive[s] its objects erroneously". Hallucinations may be manifested in a variety of forms. Various forms of hallucinations affect different senses, sometimes occurring simultaneously, creating multiple sensory hallucinations for those experiencing them. Auditory hallucinations (also known as paracusia ) are

6868-510: The end of the session. As with most of the other songs, Marshall and her instrument were recorded live. "Peking Saint" and "You May Know Him" were recorded by Turner at Scuzz Studios. "Back of your Head" was recorded for the VPRO Radio 5 show, De Avonden. The album cover of Moon Pix was taken by American photographer Roe Ethridge at his apartment in Williamsburg, Brooklyn . "I got woken up by someone in the field behind my house in South Carolina," she explained. "The earth started shaking, and dark spirits were smashing up against every window of my house. I woke up and I had my kitten next to me...and I started praying to God to help me...So I just ran and got my guitar because I

7070-504: The freedom I got there." According to Marshall, some of Moon Pix was also inspired by two months she spent alone in South Africa , Mozambique and Tanzania , an experience that she said "dented" her. "Cross Bones Style" was written about two children she met in Africa who slept in trees at night after their parents were killed. The song "Colors and the Kids" was written in the studio, and

7171-469: The generation of hallucinations. Hallucinations are associated with less accurate sensory processing, and more intense stimuli with less interference are necessary for accurate processing and the appearance of gamma oscillations (called "gamma synchrony"). Hallucinations are also associated with the absence of reduction in P50 amplitude in response to the presentation of a second stimuli after an initial stimulus; this

7272-399: The hallucinations can range from the innocuous to commands to cause harm to the self or others. Command hallucinations are often associated with schizophrenia . People experiencing command hallucinations may or may not comply with the hallucinated commands, depending on the circumstances. Compliance is more common for non-violent commands. Command hallucinations are sometimes used to defend

7373-542: The lyric "Yellow hair, you are such a funny bear" refers to several people, including Marshall's nephew, a former bandmate, and American singer/songwriter Will Oldham , whom Marshall drank with in Australia, and who she says reminded her of the South . The majority of Moon Pix was recorded at Sing Sing Studio in Melbourne , Australia by house engineer Matt Voigt. In a 2006 interview with Mess+Noise , Voigt revealed that work on

7474-559: The middle of nowhere". It was the album's first appearance on any of Pitchfork's "best of" lists for the decade. The album is referenced in Jeffrey Brown's 2005 graphic novel , Aeiou: An Easy Intimacy, as part of the 'Soundtrack Side A'. The album's cover was reenacted by the Shins on their 2001 music video for " New Slang ," along with album covers by Hüsker Dü , the Replacements ,

7575-424: The most hearing impaired group. A risk factor for multimodal hallucinations is prior experience of unimodal hallucinations. In 90% cases of psychosis, a visual hallucination occurs in combination with another sensory modality, most often being auditory or somatic. In schizophrenia, multimodal hallucinations are twice as common as unimodal ones. Will Oldham Joseph Will Oldham (born January 15, 1970)

7676-431: The nature of the images remains intact. The false images can occur in any part of the visual field, and are rarely polymodal . One of the more enigmatic forms of visual hallucination is the highly variable, possibly polymodal delirium tremens . It is associated with withdrawal in alcohol use disorder . Individuals with delirium tremens may be agitated and confused, especially in the later stages of this disease. Insight

7777-525: The observed top down and bottom up dysfunction. Thalamocortical circuits, composed of projections between thalamic and cortical neurons and adjacent interneurons, underlie certain electrophysical characteristics ( gamma oscillations ) that are associated with sensory processing. Cortical inputs to thalamic neurons enable attentional modulation of sensory neurons. Dysfunction in sensory afferents, and abnormal cortical input may result in pre-existing expectations modulating sensory experience, potentially resulting in

7878-516: The oldest person alive; copping lines from the hymn ‘ Amazing Grace ’ on the ferocious ‘Metal Heart’ or getting in character for ‘Moonshiner’, a tune that she learnt off a Dylan bootleg and that's imbued with the lonesome spirit of Will Oldham. Robert Christgau of The Village Voice gave it a rating of "C+," calling Marshall "an honest heroine of the new indie staple" which was based on "slow sadness about one's inability to relate." Also writing for The Village Voice , Jane Dark wrote that Moon Pix

7979-422: The orgasmic component and unique presentation. The regions of the brain responsible differ by the subsection of sexual hallucination. In orgasmic auras, the mesial temporal lobe , right amygdala and hippocampus are involved. In males, genital specific sensations are related to the postcentral gyrus and arousal and ejaculation are linked to stimulation in the posterior frontal lobe . In females, however,

8080-508: The other hand, can produce complex visual hallucinations of people, scenes, animals, and more as well as distortions of visual perception . Complex hallucinations may appear to be real or unreal, may or may not be distorted with respect to size, and may seem disturbing or affable, among other variables. One rare but notable type of hallucination is heautoscopy , a hallucination of a mirror image of one's self. These "other selves" may be perfectly still or performing complex tasks, may be an image of

8181-423: The perception of sound without outside stimulus. Auditory hallucinations can be divided into elementary and complex, along with verbal and nonverbal. These hallucinations are the most common type of hallucination, with auditory verbal hallucinations being more common than nonverbal. Elementary hallucinations are the perception of sounds such as hissing, whistling, an extended tone, and more. In many cases, tinnitus

8282-458: The person maintains an awareness that they are hallucinating, unlike dopaminergic hallucinations. Hallucinations are associated with structural and functional abnormalities in primary and secondary sensory cortices. Reduced grey matter in regions of the superior temporal gyrus / middle temporal gyrus , including Broca's area , is associated with auditory hallucinations as a trait, while acute hallucinations are associated with increased activity in

8383-483: The population had experienced at least one hallucinatory episode in the course of their life. More recent studies have validated these findings; the precise incidence found varies with the nature of the episode and the criteria of "hallucination" adopted, but the basic finding is now well-supported. There is tentative evidence of a relationship with non-celiac gluten sensitivity , the so-called "gluten psychosis". It has been reported that in serotonergic hallucinations,

8484-544: The prevalence of hallucinations. In all cases of hallucinations, medical attention should be sought out and informed of one's specific symptoms. Meta-analyses show that cognitive behavioral therapy and metacognitive training can also reduce the severity of hallucinations. Furthermore, there are recovery movements all around the world that advocate for individuals with schizophrenia or voice-hearers (individuals that hear voices). The Hearing Voices Movement , starting in Europe,

8585-559: The result of a wide range of causes ranging from hearing-loss (such as in musical ear syndrome , the auditory version of Charles Bonnet syndrome ), lateral temporal lobe epilepsy, arteriovenous malformation, stroke, lesion , abscess , or tumor. The Hearing Voices Movement is a support and advocacy group for people who hallucinate voices, but do not otherwise show signs of mental illness or impairment. High caffeine consumption has been linked to an increase in likelihood of one experiencing auditory hallucinations. A study conducted by

8686-477: The role of Miles in the film Thousand Pieces of Gold (1991). Oldham also played minor roles in Julien Donkey-Boy (1999), Junebug (2005), and The Guatemalan Handshake (2006). In 2004, Oldham appeared as himself in the short documentary film Tripping With Caveh , wherein he took psilocybin mushrooms with autobiographical filmmaker Caveh Zahedi . The project was intended as the pilot episode of

8787-464: The same regions along with the hippocampus , parahippocampus , and the right hemispheric homologue of Broca's area in the inferior frontal gyrus. Grey and white matter abnormalities in visual regions are associated with hallucinations in diseases such as Alzheimer's disease , further supporting the notion of dysfunction in sensory regions underlying hallucinations. One proposed model of hallucinations posits that over-activity in sensory regions, which

8888-522: The sense of smell ( olfactory system ), and in most cases, are not caused by anything serious and will usually go away on their own in time. It can result from a range of conditions such as nasal infections, nasal polyps , dental problems, migraines, head injuries, seizures , strokes, or brain tumors. Environmental exposures can sometimes cause it as well, such as smoking, exposure to certain types of chemicals (e.g., insecticides or solvents ), or radiation treatment for head or neck cancer. It can also be

8989-447: The sight impaired person can have these hallucinations varies according to the underlying speed of eye deterioration. A differential diagnosis are ophthalmopathic hallucinations. Visual hallucinations due to focal seizures differ depending on the region of the brain where the seizure occurs. For example, visual hallucinations during occipital lobe seizures are typically visions of brightly colored, geometric shapes that may move across

9090-497: The spectrum of mild to intense. Hallucinations, pseudohallucinations , or intensification of pareidolia , particularly auditory, are known side effects of opioids to different degrees—it may be associated with the absolute degree of agonism or antagonism of especially the kappa opioid receptor , sigma receptors , delta opioid receptor and the NMDA receptors or the overall receptor activation profile as synthetic opioids like those of

9191-478: The subject, not speaking to them directly. Like auditory hallucinations, the source of the visual counterpart can also be behind the subject. This can produce a feeling of being looked or stared at, usually with malicious intent. Frequently, auditory hallucinations and their visual counterpart are experienced by the subject together. Hypnagogic hallucinations and hypnopompic hallucinations are considered normal phenomena. Hypnagogic hallucinations can occur as one

9292-434: The visual field, and are rarely polymodal . The segue into hallucination may begin with illusions where sensory perception is greatly distorted, but no novel sensory information is present. These typically last for several minutes, during which time the subject may be either conscious and normal or drowsy/inaccessible. Insight into these hallucinations is usually preserved and REM sleep is usually reduced. Parkinson's disease

9393-467: The voices telling you to do?", "When did your voices first start telling you to do things?", "Do you recognize the person who is telling you to harm yourself (or others)?", "Do you think you can resist doing what the voices are telling you to do?" Phantosmia (olfactory hallucinations), smelling an odor that is not actually there, and parosmia (olfactory illusions), inhaling a real odor but perceiving it as different scent than remembered, are distortions to

9494-425: Was "supposed to mesmerize and haunt. But if you stare too long it can start to seem vacant." Pitchfork's Ryan Schreiber gave the album a rating of 7.4, and wrote that it "spins through 11 tracks of soft strumming and brittle vocals, all while you rest your head on your pillow, watching a muted black-and-white television, and drifting in and out of consciousness. Not that Moon Pix makes great sleeping music. Quite

9595-464: Was a teacher and artist. His father, Joseph Collins Oldham, was an attorney and photographer. Oldham graduated from the J. Graham Brown School in 1988. He attended Brown University sporadically while pursuing a career as an actor, and living between Brooklyn , Los Angeles , and Bloomington, Indiana . He began making music during this time, initially as a project for his professor Jeff Todd Titon , an ethnomusicologist at Brown University. Oldham

9696-549: Was eukodal (oxycodone), scopolamine and ephedrine , called the "wonder drug of the 1930s" after its invention in Germany in 1928, but only rarely specially compounded today) (q.q.v.). Hallucinations can be caused by sensory deprivation when it occurs for prolonged periods of time, and almost always occurs in the modality being deprived (visual for blindfolded/darkness, auditory for muffled conditions, etc.) Anomalous experiences , such as so-called benign hallucinations, may occur in

9797-429: Was important to call it something different so that people would be aware of the differences. Will stated in a 1995 interview with KCRW that the name Palace Flophouse was inspired by reading John Steinbeck 's Cannery Row . Beginning in 1998, Oldham has primarily used the moniker Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, which draws inspiration from several sources: [T]he name has so many different references that it could almost have

9898-419: Was just so elementary in its simplicity. I never really felt it was that good but people say, 'It's your best record.'" Marshall revealed that "it feels like I'm alive today because of being able to write those songs. Instead of darkness, instead of other choices humans make, I chose to write songs. Moon Pix was my salvation as a very mixed-up young person. And suddenly I see that." In 2019, Pitchfork updated

9999-456: Was like, 'Dude, what are you doing? You're fucking up. You could be really doing something, and you're just not putting anything in the universe, you're just a loser,'" Marshall recalled, in a 2012 interview with Caroline McCloskey of The Fader . "I was so pissed off." After the nightmare, Marshall went to New York City unsuccessfully seeking help, which included talking to priests. The afternoon that Marshall returned from New York, she received

10100-493: Was the cover." No singles were released for Moon Pix , although a music video directed by Brett Vapnek was released for "Cross Bones Style." As of 2003, the album has sold 63,000 copies in the United States alone, according to Nielsen SoundScan . Reviewing the album for NME , Stuart Bailey wrote that "Cat Power... walks a dazzling line between Sonic Youth and Hank Williams , and that on Moon Pix , "she sounds like

10201-426: Was trying to distract myself. I had to turn on the lights and sing to God. I got a tape recorder and recorded the next sixty minutes. And I played these long changes, into six different songs. That's where I got the record." In a 2013 interview with Rob Hughes of The Daily Telegraph , Marshall again recounted the experience: "I was by myself for three months in the country, surrounded by fields. One morning I had
