Modi River or Modi Khola is a tributary of Gandaki River in Parbat district of Nepal . It is a snow-fed perennial river originating from Annapurna Mountains and has a catchment area of 675 km². It meets the Kali Gandaki River at Modi Beni of Parbat District. The total length (from head to the confluence) of the river is approximately 50km. The main tributaries of the Modi river are Bhurangdi Khola, Rati Khola, Pati Khola, Malyangdi Khola, Ghandruk Khola and Ambote Khola. The mean annual precipitation in the basin is approximately 2,700mm and 80% of the total annual rainfall occurs during the monsoon .
6-830: The river banks Modi Khola consists of forest area and few agricultural and cultivated land. It is argued that the water of the Modi Khola is not suitable for irrigation purpose as the water in the Khola mainly comes from the melting glaciers and is too cold for crops. Commercial or traditional fish farms/ponds are not present in the Modi river. However, the river has various fish species (mainly Asala or Snow trout ) naturally. Other fish species are carps (Schizothorax plagiostomus, Schizothorax richardsonii, Schizothoraichthys progastus, Garra gotyla and Garra annandalei) and catfish (Glyptothorax pectinopterus and Pseudecheneis sulcata). The water from Modi Khola
12-620: A single species, S. prophylax , in Turkey. They are primarily found in highland rivers, streams and lakes, although a few species occur in lower-lying locations, like Lake Balkhash and lakes of the Sistan Basin . Their scientific name means "cloven-breast", from Ancient Greek schízeïn ( σχίζειν ) 'to cleave' and thórax ( θώραξ ) 'breast-plate' (see also thorax ). The western species are typically referred to as marinkas from their Russian name marinka ( маринка ), while
18-400: Is a part of the schizothoracines (snowtrout and allies), which also includes the genera Aspiorhynchus , Chuanchia , Diptychus , Gymnodiptychus , Gymnocypris , Oxygymnocypris , Platypharodon , Ptychobarbus , Schizopyge and Schizopygopsis . The last two were formerly often included in the present genus, and their delimitation is still not entirely clear. In any case,
24-415: Is not used for drinking purpose. Following hydropower projects are either constructed, under-construction or under planning in this river, all of them are run-of-river types. Schizothorax Racoma McClelland & Griffith, 1842 Schizothorax is a genus of cyprinid fish found in southern and western China, through northern South Asia ( Himalaya ) and Central Asia , to Iran, with
30-505: The eastern species are usually called snowtrout . Although they do resemble trouts in habitus this is merely due to convergent evolution and they are by no means closely related apart from both being Teleostei : Cyprinids are in the teleost superorder Ostariophysi , while trouts are in the superorder Protacanthopterygii . Their ancestors must thus have diverged as early as the Triassic , more than 200 million years ago . Schizothorax
36-476: The genus Schizothorax (and other "snowtrouts") are in turn related to such cyprinids as the typical barbels ( Barbus sensu stricto and the doubtfully distinct Luciobarbus and Messinobarbus ), Carasobarbus , Labeobarbus , Aulopyge and Cyprinion . They were thus placed in the subfamily Barbinae , which is quite paraphyletic however and thus here merged with the Cyprininae at least for
