The Campine is a breed of domestic chicken originating in the northern part of Belgium. It is named for the Campine region of north-eastern Belgium and south-eastern Netherlands. It was known there as the Kempisch Hoen .
20-510: The Campine was originally a smaller type of the Braekel , weighing up to 1.2 kg less. It was distributed throughout the province of Antwerp and in the northern and central part of the province of Limburg . It was decided in 1884 that the two types should be separated. After a long controversy, the Campine became a separate breed with its own breed standard on 28 August 1904. After further controversy,

This is a recent adaptation; formerly, East Flanders used the Flemish flag , a black lion on a yellow background, as in the current coat of arms. The old flag is still publicly used, e.g. for road signs. The province has several geographic or tourist regions: Important rivers are the Scheldt and the Leie which merge in Ghent . The Dender merges into

A Campines cock took first prizes at Madison Square Garden , New York City , and in Boston in January 1913. The Campines was added to the Standard of Perfection of the American Poultry Association in 1914. In the teens and early 1920s,
80-513: A population of almost 1.5 million. It had 734,000 inhabitants in 1830, when it was the most populated province of Belgium, and about a million in 1900. Population growth halted around the 1980s, but has increased again in the 21st century. Population figures in recent years is as follows: The capital and biggest city is Ghent , also the second largest city in the Flemish Region . Other smaller cities are Aalst , Sint-Niklaas and Dendermonde in
100-508: Is a province of Belgium . It borders (clockwise from the North) the Dutch province of Zeeland and the Flemish province of Antwerp , Flemish Brabant , Hainaut and West Flanders . It has an area of 3,007 km (1,161 sq mi), divided into six administrative districts containing 60 municipalities, and a population of over 1.57 million as of January 2024. The capital is Ghent , home to
120-573: Is a traditional Belgian breed of chicken. It is thought to have originated in the area of Brakel , in the Flemish province of East Flanders , for which it is named. There is a bantam version of the Braekel. The Campine of the United Kingdom derives from it. The Braekel apparently derives from same extended population of gold and silver chickens which gave rise to the closely similar Ostfriesische Möwe and Westfälischer Totleger breeds. It

The Golden Campine was used in early research into auto-sexing in chickens by Reginald Crundall Punnett and Michael Pease at the Genetical Institute in Cambridge. The Cambar , the first auto-sexing hybrid , created in 1929, was a cross between the Golden Campine and the Barred Rock . The hen-feathering trait in cocks of the Golden Campine has been found to be identical to that in
160-518: Is that cock birds display hen-feathering , which was not seen in the Belgian type. The Braekel population declined during and after the Second World War and it is a rare breed. For Belgium, population numbers reported to DAD-IS were 1500 in 1994 and 125 in 2013; the local conservation status was listed in 2023 as 'unknown'. The Braekel is also reported from the United Kingdom, where in 2023
180-474: Is thought to have originated in the area of Brakel , in the Flemish province of East Flanders , and particularly in the villages of Opbrakel and Nederbrakel ; and to have spread along the valleys of the Scheldt and Dender rivers, in East Flanders and into Hainaut . In 1884, two distinct types were recognised as separate breeds: the larger Braekel of Flanders , and a smaller and lighter type from
200-559: The 2018 elections . Previously it consisted of 72 members. The council currently consists of the following political parties: Four people chosen by and from the council form the daily government, called the deputation ( deputatie ). The deputation of East Flanders is a coalition of the N-VA , CD&V , and Groen . The daily government is led by the governor, who is appointed by the Flemish Government . Carina Van Cauter ( VLD ) has been
220-509: The Campine region to the east. In 1898, a Braekel breeders' society was established in Nederbrakel, and a breed standard was published. In 1926, the separate Braekel and Campine breeds were brought together again under a single breed standard. In the United Kingdom a very different Campine breed was created, probably through cross-breeding with pencilled Hamburgs . The principal difference

The Campine is closely related to the Dutch Chaamse Hoen . Although the Campine also has a degree of resemblance to the Egyptian Fayoumi , in plumage and in behavior, no genetic studies have been done linking the two breeds. Braekel The Braekel or Brakel
300-627: The feathers and a uniform solid neck colour are characteristic of the Braekel. The Entente Européenne lists ten colour variants , of which only the gold and the silver are recognised. The Braekel is a light breed; cocks weigh some 2–2.5 kg and hens 1.8–2.2 kg. Bantam cocks weigh about 800 g and hens about 700 g . The Gross domestic product (GDP) of the province was 56.4 billion € in 2018. GDP per capita adjusted for purchasing power was 33,000 € or 109% of the EU27 average in the same year. The provincial council ( provincieraad ) consists of 36 members which were last elected in
380-432: The same pattern, but the head, neck hackles and body ground colour is rich gold rather than white. In its country of origin, the Campine had a reputation as an "every day layer", a reliable producer of large white eggs. Campines are considered to be a flighty, hardy breed with an active and inquisitive nature. They are among the rarest of domestic chicken breeds. The Campine lays a fair number of white-shelled eggs, but
400-489: The two breeds were reunited under a single standard in 1925 or 1926, with the name Kempisch-Braekel. In 1962 it was decided that the Campine type had entirely disappeared, and the name of the Belgian breed was changed to Brakelhoen. The Campine was imported to England in about 1899, and was bred there to become a very different bird. In particular, hen feathering in cocks became standard. Hen-feathered Braekel cocks had been bred by Oscar Thomaes of Ronse , Belgium, in 1904, and
