Nintendo created this system so that new updates would not unintentionally break compatibility with older games, but it does have

7128-711: The main feature) (The season mascot changes from King to Queen) (Season was shortened due to birth of Arino's daughter) (The season mascot changes from Queen to Dark King) (the season changes from Dark King to King. The Dark King makes a brief reappearance in #53. Sarina Suzuki from Mecha Iketeru! appeared as a guest in the Tamage segment on episode #45) (The season was shortened due to Arino being hospitalized; all episodes from #64 and onwards started to be in HD and 60FPS) (The season mascot changes from King to Fallen Warrior) (The season mascot changes from Fallen Warrior to King, it

7227-399: The message board. According to the system's manual, the following file extensions (i.e. formats) are supported: Photos (jpeg/jpg), Movies (mov/avi), and Music (mp3/aac). JPEG files can be up to 8192x8192 resolution and in baseline format. Video data contained within the .mov or .avi files must be in an OpenDML -compliant MotionJPEG and use some variant of this format for their videos, with

7326-544: The most successful versions, with the FOX network and Cartoon Network each having decent success with US versions of the format. The BBC would also find success with their own version in the UK. With foreign game shows gaining interest from American viewers, in 2008, ABC created two game shows that took influence from Japanese game shows. The first of which was Wipeout , a weekly competition show that involved contestants playing in

7425-417: The one installed on the console, installing the new software will be required to play the game. This allows users without an internet connection to still receive system updates. When loaded into the disc slot, an icon on the Disc Channel that says "Wii System Update" appears. After selecting the channel, the Wii will automatically update. If these updates are not installed, the game will remain unplayable until

7524-462: The only channel that can be manually deleted or moved to an SD Card by the user. The channel takes up over half of the Wii's internal memory space. Upon connecting to the Internet and running the channel, the user will be asked if they would like to delete it. It cannot be re-downloaded or restored upon deletion. The same video presentation contained in the channel can also be viewed on an archived version of Nintendo's official website. The channel

7623-402: The original brackets around the "CX". Arino formally greets anyone of status by serving him/her a business card. The CX company even promotes Arino depending on how well he does during the season. The phrase Arino says right before turning on the console, " Kachō on!", signifies his role as chief of the aforementioned company. To continue with the corporate theme of the show, a stock certificate

7722-471: The photos and play either the music on the SD card or built-in music in the background. A built-in editor allows users to add markings and effects to their photos or videos (The edits float statically above the videos). Mosaics can also be created with this feature. In "Doodle" mode, the user can draw on or make art on the photos. The "Mood" mode allows the user to make all the photos on these four following effects which

7821-409: The poorly received Famicom game Super Monkey Daibouken . As the title suggests, Arino was allowed to call viewers who sent in postcards for advice or encouragement. He eventually cleared the game in the finale of season three. A short segment begins with Arino stepping into a sound booth in a recording studio and reading fond recollections from the viewers of their favorite games. The segment ends with

7920-516: The remake might look. Former AD Inoue invites Arino into his apartment to watch a series of videos of gruesome accidents in video games. Innocuous mistakes like crashing your bike in Excitebike are over-dramatized with slow-mo, intense music, and countdowns to the carnage. Arino and two former GCCX staffers, Toujima and Nakayama, convene in a traditional home with a table of games blanketed in front of them. The show's female announcer, Ms. Takeda, reads

8019-462: The same variety shows of years before. One notable change in Japanese variety shows since the 1980s is the decreasing use of live backup music. Variety game shows such as Nazotoki Batoru Tore! and Team Fight often featured regular celebrity guests as well as special guest appearances to tie in with forthcoming musical, cinematic and publishing releases; this - a frequent feature of primetime Japanese variety television - has remained consistent over

8118-453: The screen (including the HOME button menu) comes from that software, and not from any operating system or firmware. Therefore, the version number reported by the Wii is actually only the version number of the System Menu. This is why some updates do not result in a change of the version number: the System Menu itself is not updated, only (for example) IOSes and channels. As a side effect, this means it

8217-476: The segment shifted its focus to Game Boy games from 1989 ~ 1994. From seasons 21 to 26, the segment focused on Super Famicom games from 1990 ~ 1995. With Season 27, the segment now covers both PC Engine and Mega Drive games. Each segment begins with Arino reading a suggestion from a viewer regarding a game center, shop, or other such amusement area that contains one or more arcade cabinets or unique games. Arino visits these locations throughout Japan and plays

8316-446: The show is Konami with 60 different games. NOTE: An asterisk (*) is noted beside the episode number to indicate the episode's localization and release on Kotaku . Western titles in "quotes" are unofficial names Kotaku uses to refer to Japan-only games. (This season featured a game series or game company as its main focus with Arino's challenge game as a secondary feature) (episode numbering started with Arino's challenge games being

8415-427: The side effect that it uses up space on the Wii's internal NAND Flash memory. IOSes are referred to by their number, which can theoretically be between 3 and 255, although many numbers are skipped, presumably being development versions that were never completed. Only one IOS version can run at any given time. The only time an IOS is not running is when the Wii enters GameCube backward compatibility mode, during which

8514-559: The trial version) can only be saved to the Wii's internal memory. The application launches within a few seconds, after connecting to the Internet through a wireless LAN using the built-in interface or a wired LAN by using the USB to the Ethernet adapter. The Opera-based Wii browser allows users full access to the Internet and supports all the same web standards that are included in the desktop versions of Opera, including CSS and JavaScript . It

8613-464: The update is installed, as each time the channel is loaded with the game inserted, the update prompt will appear, and declining the update will return the player to the Wii Menu instead of starting the game. Games requiring a system update can still be played without updating using homebrew software, such as Gecko OS or a USB loader. The Mii Channel is an avatar creator, where users can design 3D caricatures of people called Miis by selecting from

8712-452: The values of the Wii Remote buttons in both Flash and JavaScript. This allows for software that previously required keyboard controls to be converted for use with the Wii Remote. The browser was also used to stream BBC iPlayer videos from April 9, 2008 after an exclusive deal was made with Nintendo UK and the BBC to offer their catch-up service for the Wii. However, the September 2009 update caused

8811-508: The will to go on. If Arino fails at a challenge then the task is handed over to the Assistant Directors who must work to complete the challenge. Arino's Challenge was originally a short companion to the extensive interview segments found in the first season of the show before becoming the focus of the show in the second season. This format has remained unchanged ever since. In this segment, Arino visited and talked to various people from

8910-580: The years. A once-popular host Kyosen Ōhashi said, "Weird shows that are called Variety only exists in Japan." One of the more well-circulated clips is a segment in Gaki no Tsukai , hosted by the comedy duo Downtown . In one part, if the male contestants fail to say a tongue-twister correctly, they get hit in the crotch by a spring-loaded pole (The Chinko Machine, or, literally, the Penis Machine), causing great pain. Hitoshi Matsumoto attempted to withdraw but

9009-402: Was acknowledged that these game show challenges had caused physical injuries to some contestants. Some of these Japanese game show injuries even included spinal injuries. In 2014, Japanese game shows were still acknowledged for having cruel challenges under the guise of comedy. In the United States of America in December 1994, Saturday Night Live mocked these unique forms of game shows with

9108-555: Was because the Wii hardware had ports for both GameCube memory cards, and peripherals and its slot-loading drive was able to accept and read the previous console's discs. GameCube games work with the Wii without any additional configuration, but a GameCube controller is required to play GameCube titles; neither the Wii Remote or the Classic Controller functions in this capacity. The Wii supports progressive-scan output in 480p-enabled GameCube titles. Peripherals can be connected via

9207-530: Was in a variety of languages provided by the Associated Press , who had a two-year contract to provide news and photos to Nintendo. Canadian news was submitted by the Canadian Press for publication. Japanese news was provided by Goo . European news was provided by Agence France-Presse . Starting with the August 6, 2007 update, the News Channel showed a news ticker in the Wii Menu, and when selecting

9306-412: Was included with the second DVD collection to have the buyers feel like they owned stock in the company. In the last episode of season 7, Bandai Namco Entertainment president Ishikawa made Arino an honorary employee and presented him with a company card. In addition, the company is set in a fictional universe featuring characters in the style of Dragon Quest , which also features several characters as

9405-482: Was later relaunched as the separate BBC iPlayer Channel on the Wii. In addition, Internet access including the Internet Channel and system updates may be restricted by the parental controls feature of the Wii. The original designs of the Nintendo Wii console, more specifically the Wii models made pre-2011 were fully backward compatible with GameCube devices including game discs, memory cards and controllers. This

9504-438: Was only featured as a commentator of THE Game Maker DVDs. The assistant directors help provide creative input, construct settings, and work as a camera crew at times, especially when on location. Their on-screen presence is typically precipitated by Arino struggling with a spot in a game. They will offer help of varying degrees, enough to dislodge Arino from his despair, but not so much as to raise questions about whether he beat

9603-451: Was released on April 11, 2007 and was free to download until June 30, 2007. After this deadline had passed, the Internet Channel cost 500 Wii Points to download until September 1, 2009, though users who downloaded the browser before June 30, 2007, could continue to use it at no cost for the lifetime of the Wii system. An update (promoted as the "Internet Channel") on October 10, 2007 added USB keyboard compatibility. On September 1, 2009

9702-534: Was shortened due to Arino getting a free rest of 100 days) (The season mascot changes from the King to Elephant King) (During Episode 244, the staff switched to a CRT monitor during the light gun stages.) (The season mascot changes from King to Frozen King and then to Penguin King.) (The season mascot changes from Penguin King back to the King) Each DVD-Box set released includes a game challenge exclusive to

9801-515: Was visible in the background. (The Big Dipper and the constellation Orion were easily recognizable, for example.) The Forecast Channel features included the current forecast, the UV index, today's overall forecast, tomorrow's forecast, a 5-day forecast (only for the selected country in which the user lives), a laundry check (Japan only) and pollen count (Japan only).
