The Ford Taurus is an automobile manufactured and marketed by the Ford Motor Company in the United States for model years (MY) 1986-2019. Introduced in late 1985 for the MY 1986, six generations were produced over 34 years, with a hiatus for MY 2006-2007. For MY 1986-2009, Ford marketed the Taurus alongside its rebadged variant, the Mercury Sable ; four generations of the high-performance Ford Taurus SHO were manufactured (1989–1999; 2010–2019). The Taurus also served as the basis for the first ever front-wheel-drive Lincoln Continental (1988–2002).

155-565: The sixth generation of the Ford Taurus is the final generation of the model range manufactured by Ford (in markets outside of China and the Middle East). Introduced for the 2010 model year, the sixth-generation Taurus is the second generation of the model line produced as a full-size car ; it was the heaviest sedan sold under the Ford brand worldwide. While sharing its D3 chassis underpinnings with

310-502: A Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). Gasoline-only Fusion models use a six-speed automatic transmission. All Fusion Hybrid and Fusion Energi models are exclusively offered with front wheel drive (FWD), while select gasoline-only Fusion models are offered with all wheel drive . All trim levels offer Ford's SYNC 3 touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration and SiriusXM Satellite Radio and Travel Link service, GPS navigation, and

465-576: A Lexus LS460 while another highlighted the blind-spot detection sensor system unavailable on an Infiniti M45x . The 2010 Ford Taurus SHO was faster than an Audi A6 4.2 FSI Quattro in straight-line acceleration while the interior of the Ford Taurus was quieter than an Acura RL . In a major contrast from previous generations of the Ford Taurus, once the highest-selling nameplate in the United States, Ford deliberately aimed for lower sales. Instead of

620-599: A canned tire inflator in lieu of a spare tire. Most options for the SHO remained available, with the Performance Package including options such as power moonroof, heated/cooled seats, multi-contour seats, auto-sensing lights and wipers, automatic high-beams, adjustable pedals, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), and satellite navigation. Options from the Driver Assist option group, however, were unavailable simultaneously with

775-553: A grille , the Taurus mainstreamed the smooth grille-less " bottom breather " nose. The aerodynamic design of the Taurus made the car more fuel-efficient, allowing Ford to meet more stringent corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standard applied by the United States government. The Taurus's success ultimately led to an American automobile design revolution; Chrysler and General Motors developed aerodynamic cars in order to capitalize on

930-595: A hybrid tax credit of US$ 3,400 (~$ 4,829 in 2023) prior to March 31, 2009. The credit dropped to US$ 1,700 if purchased by September 30, 2009, and to US$ 850 if purchased by March 31, 2010. This credit phased out on April 1, 2010. This model gets better EPA-estimated fuel economy than the Toyota Camry Hybrid , the Nissan Altima Hybrid , and the Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid , viewed as its competitors in

1085-764: A "Sport Mode" setting for the Electronic Stability Control, ability to turn off the AdvanceTrac stability control system, 27mm front anti-roll bar instead of the standard 29mm front anti-roll bar for more neutral turn-in, vented front brake dust shields from the Police Interceptor, cooling package from the Police Interceptor (engine oil, transmission oil, and power transfer unit), a shorter 3.16 to 1 final drive ratio for faster acceleration, and summer-compound 20" Goodyear Eagle F1 performance tires with premium painted wheels. 0 to 60 mph (0 to 97 km/h) time

1240-408: A "culture of quality" to the enterprise. The Taurus had an influential design that introduced new features and innovations. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, sales of the Taurus declined as it lost market share to Japanese mid-size sedans and as Ford shifted resources towards developing SUVs . The Taurus was withdrawn after the 2007 model year, with production ending on October 27, 2006. As part of

1395-570: A 220-ampere alternator ; heavy-duty 13-inch (330 mm) brake rotors with special ventilation and 18-inch (460 mm) five-spoke steel wheels; a police-tuned suspension with upsized sway bars and premium wheel hubs; steel deflector plates along the underbody; reinforced frame points; reinforced front door hinges with large tethers, and a specially tuned electronic stability control system set up for emergency-style driving. The interior offered heavy-duty front and rear cloth seats or rear vinyl seats, stab-proof front seat-backs, vinyl or carpeted flooring,

1550-686: A 221 hp (165 kW) 3.0 L Duratec 30 V6 and a 6-speed automatic, made by Aisin Japan. The Fusion shares some interior parts with the otherwise unrelated Mk III Ford Mondeo , such as part of the console and the seats. The Fusion was heavily based on Mazda designs. Ford used Mazda's G platform, which Ford called the CD3 platform. In addition, the I4 engine, as well as both 5-speed transmissions, were designed by Mazda. The Fusion benefitted greatly from this, with Mazda-like handling and reliability. The Ford designed V6

1705-399: A 3.5 L 24-valve DOHC Duratec V6 engine, six-speed automatic transmission, manual tilt/telescopic steering wheel with audio and cruise control functions, an AM/FM stereo with a single CD player, clock, MP3 capability, and six speakers, Ford's MyKey system, and AdvanceTrac electronic stability control. All wheel drive was not available on the base SE trim. The mid-range SEL trim level had

1860-512: A Fusion GT in late 2009 or early 2010. Its 3.5-liter Eco-Boost V-6 would make about 340 horsepower. No such vehicle ever came to fruition. For 2007, all-wheel-drive became available on V6 models. Sirius Satellite Radio became available as an option on the SE and SEL trims. The front passenger fold-flat seat was introduced and became standard on the SEL and SE trims. The Fusion gained front-seat side airbags ,

2015-625: A One-Ford project, Ford of Europe Head of Advanced design team Chris Hamilton was commissioned as lead designer based in Detroit, under the guise Exterior Chief Designer for Ford/ Lincoln , with design support led from Ford of Europe studios in Germany and the United Kingdom. Test and development of localized versions was undertaken in both North America and Europe, resulting in different engine choices, automatic gearboxes, suspension settings and tires. Like

2170-506: A SelectShift 6-speed automatic transmission with control paddles mounted on the steering wheel, torque-sensing all-wheel drive, sport-tuned suspension and steering, 19-inch alloy wheels with Goodyear Eagle tires (Michelin high-performance tires on the optional 20-inch wheels), a decklid-mounted spoiler, twin chrome exhaust tips, and SHO-specific parking lamp bezels. The SHO Performance Package includes upgraded brake pads, recalibrated electronic power-assisted steering for improved responsiveness,

2325-447: A best-in-class 22 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. All models received upgrades to the steering and braking systems to improve driveability, including standard torque vectoring and curve control, improving tracking at higher speeds. Updates to the instrument dials were added, which were fully digital, clearer, and more colorful. MyFord Touch was added as part of Taurus's Sync system. On April 25, 2018, Ford announced plans to discontinue

2480-432: A charge of US$ 300 million by Ford. In 2018, Ford recalled 2013–15 Ford Fusion with 1.6-liter Sigma GTDI engines and B6 manual transmissions, due to potential risk of the steering wheel becoming loose. On May 15, 2019, Ford recalled about 270,000 2013–16 Ford Fusion with the 2.5L engine and automatic transmission due to the possibility that a bushing that holds the transmission lever safety cable in place could detach from

2635-471: A column shifter as opposed to a floor shifter, washable rear door panels, programmable steering wheel buttons, the ability to disable the rear door handles and switches from the factory, specialized areas to mount emergency equipment, and a certified-calibration speedometer (140 mph [230 km/h] for the standard 3.5 L, 160 mph [260 km/h] for the EcoBoost and 3.7 L versions). For

2790-408: A cost-saving option. The new 3.7 L V6 was not available on the civilian Ford Taurus. Its 3.72 L (227 in) aluminum block V6 engine weighed 40 lb (18 kg) less than the previous version. It produced 305 hp (227 kW) and 279 lb⋅ft (378 N⋅m) of torque. All available engines came standard with a six-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. Front-wheel drive

2945-417: A driver's blind spot , providing both audible and visual warnings if traffic unseen by the driver is detected. BLIS technology enables rear cross-traffic alert , aiding drivers backing out of parking space where visibility is obstructed. Other safety features include Ford Sync , second-row Inflatable Safety Belts , Auto Start-Stop , electric power-assisted steering, and Intelligent All-Wheel Drive . For

3100-418: A few aspects of the interior as evidently cost-cutting. Water pumps on 2008 to 2019 Ford Taurus and 2013 to 2019 Ford Police Interceptor Sedan equipped with the 3.5L Ford Cyclone V6 V6, 3.5L EcoBoost V6, and 3.7L V6 have a tendency to fail and potentially ruin the engine. The water pumps on these engines are internally mounted and driven by the timing chain. If they fail, antifreeze may be dumped directly into

3255-510: A front cloth bench seat, while the LX, the more luxurious model, came with a greater number of features as standard equipment. The Taurus was well received by both the public and the press. It won many awards, most notably being named to the 1986 Car and Driver Ten Best List and becoming the 1986 Motor Trend Car of the Year . Over 200,000 Tauruses were sold during the 1986 model year and the millionth Taurus

3410-809: A front-wheel drive powertrain with optional all-wheel drive (standard on the SHO). As with all other D3 sedans, the Ford Taurus used four-wheel independent suspension, featuring MacPherson struts and rearward-facing lower L-arms with a stabilizer bar in the front and a multilink coilover shock setup with stamped steel lower control arms and cast upper control arms in the rear — and four-wheel antilock disc brakes. On all models, AdvanceTrac combines traction control and stability control , with Torque Vectoring Control and Curve Control optional on all-wheel drive models. Safety innovations included BLIS , Adaptive cruise control , Forward Collision Warning with Brake Support , and Lane keeping assist . As with its predecessor,

3565-422: A large number of options and three different configurations. This means that the interior of the Taurus can be spartan or luxurious, depending on the buyer's choice of options. On models with an automatic transmission, the Taurus's interior was available in three different seating configurations. The interior equipment depends on model. The most basic model, the L (see below), came standard, with just an AM radio and

3720-412: A leopard look" which was considered handsome. However, despite being praised for its exterior appearance, it was still criticized for its lack of interior room and reduced sight-lines despite its full-sized exterior dimensions, compared to the previous-generation Five Hundred/Taurus which was praised for its vast interior and greenhouse visibility; one reviewer remarked that while the "old Taurus' interior

3875-528: A model line revision, the Taurus and the larger Ford Crown Victoria were to be replaced with the full-size Five Hundred and mid-size Fusion sedans; the Taurus station wagon was replaced with the Ford Freestyle wagon, branded as a crossover SUV. During the 2007 Chicago Auto Show , the nameplates of the Taurus and Sable were revived, intended as 2008 mid-cycle revisions of the Five Hundred. The Freestyle

4030-450: A more powerful engine. Partially blaming the Five Hundred's struggles on its name, Mulally decided that the revised vehicle should be marketed as the Taurus, the name he believed the Five Hundred sedan should have used from the beginning as he believed Ford was better off continuing to use its older nameplates that maintained decent brand equity rather than trying to build up new ones. The revised Five Hundred and Freestyle were showcased as

4185-484: A new optional 8" screen navigation control system, a new center console design, and Ford's new trademark "Ice Blue" illumination for the controls and gauges that is shared with the current Ford Focus and Ford F-150 . The Ford Fusion line-up was included in the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety 2010 "Top Safety Picks" rating for the mid-size category. Due to the fact that Ford modified and strengthened

4340-716: A next-generation hybrid version, and a plug-in hybrid version, the Ford Fusion Energi . The Ford Fusion became the first production sedan to offer these three options. Sales of the gasoline-powered and hybrid version began in the US in October 2012. Sales in Europe and Asia, as Ford Mondeo, are expected to begin in 2013. Deliveries of the Fusion Energi began the U.S. in February 2013. Sales of

4495-534: A practice they blamed for Ford's struggles at the time. The Truth About Cars similarly lamented how Ford neglected the Taurus to the point where it became a "rental car." Newly-hired Ford CEO Alan Mulally expressed similar opinions, telling the Associated Press the decision "perplexed" him when he learned about it; he recalled asking subordinates, "How can it go away? It's the best selling car in America!" As

4650-503: A premium AM/FM radio with a six-disc in-dash CD changer, chrome-accenting, heated mirrors with memory and security approach lamps, a reverse sensing system and rear view camera. The 2010 Taurus SHO was unveiled at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show. It went on sale in summer 2009, with a base MSRP of $ 37,995 (including destination fees). The SHO includes a 3.5 L EcoBoost V6 engine rated at 272 kW (370 PS; 365 hp) at 5500 rpm and 475 N⋅m (350 lb⋅ft) of torque at 1500 rpm,

4805-677: A presence in NASCAR , replacing the Thunderbird for the 1998 season. The Taurus became the first four-door sedan to be approved for competition. The first Taurus driver to win the Winston Cup (the NASCAR sponsor of the time) championship was Dale Jarrett , who drove No. 88 Ford Quality Care / Ford Credit -sponsored cars owned by Robert Yates . The first Taurus driver to win the Busch Series championship

4960-527: A rear view camera. Structural improvements provided improved driver protection small-overlap frontal crashes. For 2013, the Taurus replaced the Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis as the full-size Ford offering in the Middle East, offered in that region for the first time. For 2014, new wheel designs were introduced, with minor changes to standard and optional equipment. A Lane keeping assist feature

5115-770: A replacement for the Crown Victoria (or the Mercury Grand Marquis ), the sixth generation Taurus was marketed in the full-size segment against many similar vehicles as the preceding sedans. The sixth-generation Taurus marked the return of the Taurus SHO (for the first time since 1999) and the introduction of the Police Interceptor Sedan (replacing the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor ). As Ford expanded its model line of SUVs and crossover,

5270-627: A second-generation Fusion, and the Platinum , which adds more luxury features onto the previously top-of-the-line Titanium trim level (the Platinum is also available for both the Fusion Hybrid and Fusion Energi models). Also new for 2017 on most Fusion models is Ford's new SYNC 3 infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, which replaces the MyFord Touch infotainment system that

5425-545: A side air curtain, and a perimeter alarm as standard features, all of which had previously been available as cost options. An auxiliary input jack for transmission from a portable audio player was added, along with some equipment modifications. A DVD-based navigation system became available. New optional features included rear parking assist, Ford's SYNC multimedia and communication system, and ambient interior lighting . The DVD navigation

5580-583: A subtle continuous massage, designed to lessen back pain on long trips. In 2013, the Ford Taurus saw a mid-cycle refresh, adopting features of the global Kinetic Design language featured on redesigns of the Ford Focus, Ford Fiesta, and Ford Kuga. While the roofline and side panels remained, the Taurus was given a new front fascia with a trapezoidal upper grille (emphasized on the SHO and Police Interceptor) and restyled headlamps. Design features included rear LED taillamps along with dual exhaust (true dual exhaust on

5735-469: Is 28 mm (1.1 in) bigger overall, 18 mm (0.7 in) wider, and 31 mm (1.2 in) taller. In contrast to the front double wishbone suspension of the first generation Fusion, at front are MacPherson struts , and at rear is a multi-link rear suspension. Despite larger exterior dimensions, some aspects of the interior have shrunk, including the trunk, which fell slightly from 467 to 453 L (16.5 to 16.0 cu ft). The 2013 Fusion

5890-552: Is a gasoline-electric hybrid powered version of the mid-size Fusion sedan launched to the U.S. market in March 2009, with an initial sale price of US$ 27,270. EPA ratings for the Ford Fusion Hybrid are 41 mpg city and 36 mpg highway. In city driving a full tank delivers 700 miles. In April 2009 editors of Kelley Blue Book named the 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid to its 2009 list of "Top 10 Green Cars". The Fusion Hybrid qualified for

6045-458: Is available in S, SE, and Titanium trim levels. Ford assembled five different powertrains for the second generation, including two hybrid variants. All available engines are four-cylinder offerings, dropping the previous model's 3.0L V6 as the top tier engine choice, as part of Ford's push to phase out the aging Duratec 30, as well as the Sport package's 3.5L V6 as a performance option. In the 2017 update,

SE and SEL trims are powered by the 1.5L EcoBoost turbocharged I4 gasoline engine, and the Titanium trim level is powered by the 2.0L EcoBoost turbocharged I4 gasoline engine. All Fusion Hybrid and Fusion Energi models are powered by an Atkinson cycle naturally-aspirated 2.0L I4 gasoline engine with an electric motor, as well as

6665-675: Is rated at 5.2 seconds. When the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (CVPI) ended production in late 2011, Ford developed two new models to replace it, as part of their Ford Police Interceptor range. For the 2013 model year, Ford introduced the Taurus-based Ford Police Interceptor Sedan (FPIS) and Explorer-based Ford Police Interceptor Utility (FPIU). Co-developed and tested by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and

6820-706: The DN5 platform (renamed the DN101 platform in 1995 and the D186 platform in 1999), the Taurus became a full-size car in 2007, adopting the Volvo-derived D3 platform , offering front- or all-wheel drive . The Taurus was produced as a four-door sedan through its entire production, with a five-door station wagon offered from 1986 to 2005. All generations of the Taurus were assembled by Chicago Assembly on Chicago 's South Side . Prior to its 2006 closure, Atlanta Assembly also produced both

6975-637: The Focus and then the extension of Fiesta production, which both came into North America in 2012. The new model marks the reconvergence of Ford's mid-size platform for both Europe and the Americas – the CDW27 program which spawned the Ford Contour/Mercury Mystique and the original European Mondeo had been the company's previous attempt at a mid-size car for the world, which was met with mixed success. As

S and SE trims receive cloth seating surfaces, while SEL and Hybrid SE models receive "Active-X" leatherette-trimmed seating surfaces, and Titanium, Hybrid Titanium, and Energi Titanium receive leather-trimmed seating surfaces. The Sport and its 2.7L twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 gasoline engine have been discontinued for

7285-578: The Michigan State Police , the FPIS was a specially-designed variant of the sixth-generation Taurus. Unlike the outgoing CVPI, the sedan was unavailable with a V8 engine or rear-wheel drive . Initially, the FPIS was offered with a standard 3.5 L naturally aspirated V6 with front- or all-wheel drive that made 288 hp (215 kW) and 254 lb⋅ft (344 N⋅m) of torque, as well an optional 3.5 L EcoBoost V6 with all-wheel drive borrowed from

7440-557: The United States . The new Fusion was built on Ford's CD3 platform , which was designed by Mazda as the Mazda G platform. The Fusion was the first production car to feature the "new face of Ford" three-bar grille. The Fusion was available in S, SE, and SEL trims. The base engine was the 160 hp (119 kW) Mazda -designed 2.3 L Duratec 23 I4 , paired with either a 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission, both also designed by Mazda. SE and SEL models were also available with

7595-575: The 1990s peak volumes of nearly 400,000 vehicles a year, sales were projected closer to 50,000 to 75,000. As a full-size car, the Taurus competed closer to the Toyota Avalon and Nissan Maxima than the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Nissan Altima (competitors of the Ford Fusion ). Additionally, Ford sought to preserve the resale value of the Taurus by avoiding fleet sales, though the Taurus would replace

7750-479: The 2.5-liter engines (including those for the hybrid model) are available as of the 2012 model year. The second generation line-up includes a gasoline engine option, an EcoBoost engine option, a next-generation hybrid model, and a plug-in hybrid version, the Ford Fusion Energi , making the Ford Fusion the first production sedan to offer these four options. This was a result of China having a much lower tax rate on cars with a displacement below 1500 cc. The 2017–2020 Fusion introduced a revised 2.0 engine with a twin scroll turbocharger producing 245 hp and 275 lb-ft with a 1 mpg overall increase in fuel economy. The new 2013 line-up also includes

8215-400: The 2020 model year . In 2012, Ford recalled about 90,000 2013 Ford Escape and Fusion in the U.S. and Canada with 1.6-liter engines that may overheat and cause fires after 13 reports of fire were reported to Ford. In 2017, Ford recalled 2013–2014 Ford Fusion with 1.6 ecoboost engines because of a risk of engine fires caused by a "lack of coolant circulation". The recall partly contributed to

8370-511: The 3.5 EcoBoost V6. Power in the 3.5L naturally-aspirated V6, standard in non-SHO models, was up to 288 hp. With this engine, EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings were 19 mpg city and 29 mpg highway in FWD models, and 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway in AWD models. There was a new engine option for non-SHO models, a 2.0L EcoBoost inline-4 developing up to 240 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque while delivering

8835-538: The Ford Taurus lost its best-selling status to the Toyota Camry. For 1996, Ford Australia imported the Ford Taurus sedan as the "Taurus Ghia" alongside its locally produced Ford Falcon EL , but imports ceased after only one year because of poor sales. Ford New Zealand imported both Ford Taurus sedans and station wagons from 1996 to 1998 with success alongside the RWD Australian Ford Falcon/Fairmont/Fairlane. The third-generation Taurus had

8990-563: The Ford Taurus was equipped with dual front airbags, side airbags, and curtain airbags. Although previewed by the V8-powered Ford Interceptor and is a full-size sedan like the Ford Crown Victoria, the sixth-generation Ford Taurus was not available with a V8 engine. At its 2010 launch, the standard engine was the 263 hp 3.5L V6 retained from the previous Taurus, which was upgraded to 288 hp in 2013. The Taurus SHO

Despite the mid-cycle facelift of the Five Hundred for MY 2008, simultaneous with its rebranding as the Taurus and a gained 60 hp increase,

9300-438: The Ford account in 1979 and Robert Cox was assigned to the Ford account and by the summer of 1981, "Quality is Job 1" became Ford's calling card in marketing. This emphasis on quality was used heavily in marketing of the Ford Taurus. The first-generation Taurus was launched in 1985 as a 1986 model to strong fanfare and sales, replacing the slow-selling mid-size Ford LTD. (The full-size Ford LTD Crown Victoria remained as part of

9455-446: The Ford lineup.) The release of the Ford Taurus was one of the most anticipated ever, mostly because it was a first in car design and also the start of new quality standards for Ford. At the time of the Taurus's debut, Ford had been producing mainly rear-wheel drive cars, and Chrysler and General Motors were offering more front-wheel-drive vehicles up to mid-range including the Chrysler K platform and A-body Chevrolet Celebrity . Car buyers in

13795-483: The best selling car in America. The discontinuation of the Taurus sparked debate given its once-strong position in the market and Ford's well-publicized financial problems at the time.
