The Cadillac V series (stylized as V-Series ) is a line of high-performance vehicles tuned by the General Motors Performance division for the Cadillac division of General Motors . Models in the V series tend to vary from one generation to the other. It was introduced in 2003.

58-447: The V series was initially created as part of the 2000s Cadillac rebranding and the new 'Art & Science' design language to compete directly with German rivals such as BMW M and Mercedes-AMG . The first-ever V series model was the 2004 Cadillac CTS-V which became a successful seller and steered Cadillac in the new direction for the following decade. The letter "V" was chosen as a salute dedicated to post-WWII Cadillacs that featured

116-532: A V-shape ornament below the crowned wreath logo, the shape itself was never recognized as a letter back then. Most V series Cadillac cars traditionally include high-performance V8 engines , transmissions, revised suspension systems ( MagneRide Control ), revised interiors, aerodynamics, and more aggressive bodywork which is intended to improve the vehicles' aerodynamic performance as well as differentiate them from their normal production counterparts. Cadillac has also re-entered motorsport competition with their CTS-V.R,

174-743: A daily driver. Starting with the X5 M and X6 M, and featured in the F10 M5, BMW used the twin-turbocharged S63 which not only produces more horsepower and torque, but is also more efficient than the S85 V10. Also unlike the S85 and S65 which do not share a design with non-M BMW engines, the S63 has significant parts commonality with the base N63 V8 engine (which is also has twin turbochargers) making them less expensive to build. BMW has not yet considered supercharging. The BMW M3 (E92/E93)

232-466: A heavily-tuned "LS9" EATON -supercharged 6.2-liter (380 in) V8 engine that was borrowed from Corvette. The engine was renamed as "LSA" and it produces 556 horsepower and 551 pound-feet (747 N⋅m) of torque. The same "LSA" engine is used in the CTS-V coupe and wagon. The V-Series development emerged from the mindset taking over at General Motors back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, where Cadillac

290-651: A joint venture between GM Performance Division and Pratt & Miller race team, most famous for their role in GM's Le Mans-winning Corvette C5.R program. In 2009, the second-generation CTS-V sedan achieved a lap time of 7:59.32 at the Nürburgring Nordschleife , which was the fastest documented time for a production sedan on factory tires—until the Porsche Panamera Turbo clocked a time of 7:56 in July 2009—thanks to

348-567: A new top-level V series trim dubbed; V Blackwing (after the engine used in the CT6-V), taking the place of the previous generation V models (e.g. the CTS-V being directly replaced by the CT5-V Blackwing). This pushes the V models to serve as a mid-level trim in Cadillac's entire trim levels (even non-performance models) and features smaller engines rather than V8s. The move is aimed to make better use of

406-598: A similarly sized BMW M car, such as the Lexus IS-F vs. Audi RS 4 vs. Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG vs. BMW M3 . In contrast to aftermarket tuners, Alpina BMW-based cars are currently mostly built by BMW on its production lines and are more comfort-oriented. Alpina is recognized as a car manufacturer and works very closely with BMW, sometimes participating in the development of BMW models and engines. Some Alpina models are even sold in North-America by BMW and either compete with

464-644: A six-speed Tremec manual transmission . Since the LS was a V8 engine, it required a unique engine cradle distinct from the base CTS V6. Larger anti-roll bars and larger shocks were also added, and the spring rate was significantly increased. The XLR hard-top followed in 2005, sharing its platform with the Chevrolet Corvette (C6) . The XLR-V used a supercharged 4.4-liter (270 in) Northstar V8 which produced 443 hp (330 kW) and 414 lb·ft (561 N·m). The supercharger and four intercoolers were built into

522-540: A total of 3648 units between 9/1987 and 11/1990 of which a majority of 2542 units were made available in two-door form (code name AK95). No catalytic converters were installed on this limited version. The steering rack, springs, shock absorbers, and brakes were similar to the normal E30 6-cylinder models (i.e. 325i) with sports suspension. The engine was mated to a Getrag 265 5-speed transmission in dog-leg configuration. Audi's RS models, Mercedes-Benz's AMG models, and Lexus F models are often reviewed in direct competition to

580-674: A traditional torque-converter automatic transmission. BMW M engines were traditionally large displacement naturally aspirated high revving engines, particularly the S85 V10 in the E60 M5 and E63 M6 and the related S65 V8 in the E90 M3. These are the most powerful engines BMW has ever built (not including the BMW S70/2 ) without supercharging or turbocharging, with an output of 100 hp per liter of displacement, and each has won numerous International Engine of

638-411: A turn of the steering wheel x degree(s) causes the wheel(s) to turn y degree(s). In most passenger cars , the ratio is between 12:1 and 20:1. For example, if one and a half turns of the steering wheel, 540 degrees, causes the inner & outer wheel to turn 35 and 30 degrees respectively, due to Ackermann steering geometry , the ratio is then 540:((35+30)/2) = 16.6:1. A higher steering ratio means that

696-524: Is the first-ever V series Cadillac to be powered by a V6 rather than a V8. The fourth-generation V series evolves away from "Art & Science" and ushers into Cadillac's new design language, beginning with the flagship CT6-V. Cadillac is also restructuring the V series with this generation. In place of the discontinued V-Sport introduced in the previous generation, Cadillac is repositioning the V models as an entry-level performance variant (with CT6 V-Sport being renamed CT6-V right before launch), and introducing

754-691: The Cadillac V series in motorsports is its dominance in the Pirelli World Challenge series. In 2017, Cadillac won the Manufacturer's Championship in the GT class, while their drivers took the top three spots in the Driver's Championship. With their success in the Pirelli World Challenge, Cadillac has also competed in other high-profile motorsports events. For example, the V series has competed in endurance races such as

812-576: The McLaren F1 , which, like its engine supplier and manufacturer, has enjoyed plenty of racing success, famously winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1995, the first year of competition for the GTR racing variant. At present, BMW M has offered modified versions of nearly every BMW nameplate, except for the Z1 . The BMW X5 and X6 sport activity vehicles received M derivatives for the 2010 model year onwards. These are

870-634: The Nürburgring racing circuit in Germany. BMW M also provides M packages for the BMW S1000RR motorcycle, with a limited-production homologation -special, race-type machine designated M1000RR , produced from 2021 onwards. Established in May 1972 with 35 employees, it grew to 400 employees by 1988, and is currently an integral part of BMW's market presence. The first racing project was BMW's 3.0 CSL . After this came

Cadillac ATS-V.R Cadillac DPi-V.R Cadillac V-Series.R BMW M BMW M GmbH , formerly known as BMW Motorsport GmbH , is a subsidiary of BMW AG that manufactures performance cars. BMW M ("M" for "motorsport") was initially created to facilitate BMW's racing program, which

986-592: The 2023 model year. The Escalade-V is expected to have a supercharged LT4 V-8, also used to power the CT5-V Blackwing sedan, both being hand built in the Performance Build Center at General Motors Corvette Assembly Plant in Bowling Green,Ky. More details will be released in the spring of 2022 and the car will start arriving on dealerships in the second half of 2022. One of the most notable achievements of

1044-508: The 3 Series, 5 Series, and roadsters), while AMG has created fast versions of many of its nameplates, including flagship sedans and SUVs. Accordingly, "an M car has to be responsive and fundamentally keen on turning as well as accelerating. The M5's technical spec is all about connecting the driver to a car that reacts blindingly fast, whatever request the driver hands down." Until the 2010 model year, BMW M has also never used supercharging or turbocharging, unlike Mercedes-AMG or Audi ; for instance

1102-435: The 405 pound-feet (549 N⋅m) generating 3.0-liter LGY twin-turbo V6 . Sent to the wheels via the new GM 10-Speed automatic transmission. The 360hp CT5-V features Magnetic Ride Control and electronic limited-slip differential. On the steering wheel there's a new button called "V-Mode", which activates a driver preset custom settings, such as the engine sounds, steering, suspension, powertrain, and brake response. Taking over

1160-639: The 5 Series and 6 Series only having a choice of either a manual or automatic transmission, but the 'M' Sport package had an optional Sequential Sport Gearbox (SSG) (a gearbox similar to the M5 and M6 (SMG)) until after the 2007 model year. Two models, the M1 (1978–1981) and XM (2022–present), are not pinnacle versions of an existing BMW model, but rather, are ground-up performance models produced and sold exclusively in their M variant. Sometimes labelled as "M Original" cars, these models represent flagship performance and design for

1218-507: The 556 hp (415 kW) engine and six-speed manual or automatic transmission, Magnetic Ride Control, Brembo brakes, 19-inch aluminum wheels and performance tires and a dual-airflow grille also used in the CTS-V sedan and coupe. The CTS-V coupe debuted at the 2010 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, and entered production in summer 2010 as a 2011 model. It has the same 556 hp (415 kW) engine and transmission choices as

1276-502: The BMW 530MLE in 1976. It was designed to compete in South Africa's Modified Production Series instead of the regular E12 528i. 100 homologated road cars had to be produced for this. After the success of BMW M products like BMW 3.0 CSL in racing venues and the growing market for high performance sports cars, M introduced cars for sale to the public. The first official M-badged car for sale to

1334-791: The BMW M6 Gran Coupé, in the case of the Alpina B6 Gran Coupé, or replace them, in the case of the Alpina B7 as there is no M7 variant of the 7 Series to compete with the model. BMW M also faces competition from several independent companies offering their own performance versions of BMW models; some performance packs can be retrofitted to existing cars while others are applied to new cars bought directly from BMW AG and converted prior to first registration. Such companies include Hamann Motorsport , Dinan Cars , G-Power , AC Schnitzer and Hartge . Steering ratio Steering ratio refers to

1392-554: The CTS-V and ATS-V. For the 2016 model year, the trim was rebranded as V-Sport. The V-Sport trim designation was discontinued with the CTS and XTS sedan phase-outs in 2019 and 2020, respectively. The CTS-V was powered by a supercharged version of the Corvette (C7) 6.2-liter LT4 V8 engine found on the Z06. It generated 640 horsepower (480 kW), 10 horsepower (7.5 kW) less than the Z06, making

1450-567: The CTS-V sedan. The CTS-V Coupe features unique centered twin exhausts, a larger grille for air intake, and an optional "saffron" interior trim color. Like the CTS-V sedan, it comes standard with 19-inch aluminum wheels, Brembo brakes, and Magnetic Ride Control. Released in China in 2012, the CTS Vday was a special edition commemorating Cadillac's 110th anniversary. The CTS Vday does not have any changes to its 3.0 V6 . The third-generation V series included

1508-613: The E39 and E60 iterations of the BMW M5 (using naturally-aspirated engines) competed against the Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG (with a supercharged V8) and the Audi RS6 (twin-turbo). BMW M vehicles can use a variety of transmissions, including manual , dual-clutch , and automatic transmissions . The North American market E36 M3s in sedan and convertible form were the first M-vehicles offered with

1566-543: The M brand. In 2012 BMW introduced a new category for M cars, branded as M Performance, designed “to bridge the gap between M Sport variants and the outright M high-performance models.“ The lineup included the diesel-powered M550d in saloon and touring body styles, X5 M50d, and X6 M50d, marking the first diesel-powered BMW models to ever carry M-badging. The gasoline-powered M135i debuted shortly after. BMW has since announced M Performance variants of nearly every model in their lineup, including three new electric models,

1624-460: The V series sub-brand and spread it into a price range of two categories instead of just one. Also new to the fourth-generation V series, is the ability to add Cadillac's Platinum package for the first time on a V model. The CT6-V served as a launch platform for Cadillac's hand-built 4.2-liter Blackwing twin-turbo V8 , generating 550 horsepower (410 kW) and 640 pound-feet (870 N⋅m) of torque. The CT6-V also included all-wheel drive, making it

1682-547: The Year Awards. As late as the early 2000s, BMW regarded forced-induction (supercharging or turbocharging) as low-tech shortcuts to boosting horsepower, stating that this adds weight and complexity while reducing throttle response. BMW purists have noted that while forced induction and/or large displacement does produce more torque for better day-to-day driving, most of them like the "character" and sound of low displacement naturally aspirated engines with high redlines. However,

1740-475: The boot. BMW has offered these 'M Sport' options on their standard vehicles since the late 1970s which explains why these vehicles carry M badges straight from the factory. In comparison, vehicle maker Audi also employs this same type of nomenclature. There are fully fledged 'S' models (S4, S5, S6, S7 and TTS), as well as an optional 'S'-line package that can be equipped to their standard vehicle lineup. An example of 'M'-badged vehicles in recent times includes

1798-416: The center of the rack, the space between the teeth are smaller and the space becomes larger as the pinion moves down the rack. In the middle of the rack there is a higher ratio and the ratio becomes lower as the steering wheel is turned towards lock. That makes the steering less sensitive when the steering wheel is close to its center position and makes it harder for the driver to over steer at high speeds. As

1856-490: The first M vehicles with xDrive four-wheel drive and automatic transmissions, and also the first M-badged SUV models. However, the E70 and E71 X5 and X6 M were actually developed by BMW Group rather than by BMW M. Although these are considered the most well known in-house tuning divisions, BMW M has a considerably different philosophy than Mercedes-AMG. BMW M has emphasized tuning only vehicles with "Lateral agility" (which has long been

1914-455: The first V series ever to feature AWD, and the first Cadillac sedan ever to feature a V8 with AWD. This statement is not true. The sts in its highest trim came with a north star and awd With the remarkably lightweight Omega Platform , active rear-wheel steering , and all-wheel drive, the CT6-V redefined performance for a vehicle of its size. It was the most agile and nimble full-size luxury sedan in

1972-465: The full-fledged CTS-V. Starting with XTS , the marque offers a step trim, called Vsport. The Vsport trim is the top of the XTS line, with a 3.6-liter turbocharged engine, producing 410 horsepower (310 kW). The next year, the third-generation CTS offered with a Vsport trimline, however with an increased output of 420 horsepower (310 kW). Both of them were the only "V"-badged vehicles of Cadillac until

2030-551: The i4, ix and the i7. All these cars are true BMW Motorsport models, not M-line sport models that bear BMW Motorsport features such as sport body kits, and interior specs. In the late 1980s, due to prohibitive taxes for cars above 2.0-litres of engine displacement in Italy and Portugal, BMW decided to build the E30 320is as an alternative to the 2.3-litre M3. This car was equipped with a shorter stroke S14 engine and produced 192 PS. BMW produced

2088-649: The intake manifold. A six-speed automatic transmission , larger brakes from the Z51 Corvette, and 19-inch wheels were used. The XLR base price was $ 98,000 and by 2008 it reached $ 101,300 making it one of General Motors ' most expensive vehicles to that point. A year after the XLR-V launch and two after the CTS-V, in 2006, Cadillac started producing the STS-V sedan. Its 4.4-liter (270 in) XLR-V derived Northstar V8 produced 26 more horsepower and 25 more lb-ft of torque. The engine

2146-505: The late 2000s international regulations trends on reducing CO 2 emissions and fuel consumption are cited as the reasons not to continue further development on naturally aspirated high redline engines. The N54 twin-turbo inline-6 which debuted in the 2007 BMW 335i (E90) gives almost equivalent performance to the E46 and E90 iterations of the BMW M3, while being much more practical and fuel-efficient as

2204-664: The lead from the ATS, the CT4-V features 2.7L dual-volute high-output engine 4-inline turbo engine, generating 325 horsepower (242 kW) and 380 pound-feet (520 N⋅m). The CT4-V includes Magnetic Ride Control and Brembo brakes as standard. The same "V-Mode" button available in the CT5-V is also found in the CT4-V. The 2022 CT5-V Blackwing was announced in February 2021 to have a 6.2 liter supercharged 668 hp pushrod V-8 engine. The 2022 CT4-V Blackwing

2262-564: The possibility of a CTS-V wagon, the GM Vice Chairman at that time, Bob Lutz, replied, "... should sufficient demand materialize, there is no reason why we couldn't do a V-series wagon, and I would be standing in line for one, just ahead of you." GM decided to move forward, introducing a 5-door sport wagon body style to the CTS-V vehicle line at the New York International Auto Show on March 29, 2010. The CTS-V wagon shares

2320-562: The public was the M1 , revealed at the Paris Motor Show in 1978. The M1, however, was more of a racecar in domestic trim than an everyday driver. The direction of the M cars changed with the 1979 release of the M535i , which was a high performance version of BMW's popular 5 Series mid-size sedan. In 1993, BMW Motorsport GmbH changed their name to BMW M GmbH. BMW Motorsport GmbH supplied the 6.1-litre V12 DOHC 48 valve engine that powers

2378-441: The ratio between the turn of the steering wheel (in degrees) or handlebars and the turn of the wheels (in degrees). The steering ratio is the ratio of the number of degrees of turn of the steering wheel to the number of degrees the wheel(s) turn as a result. In motorcycles , delta tricycles and bicycles , the steering ratio is always 1:1, because the steering wheel is fixed to the front wheel. A steering ratio of x:y means that

2436-446: The second-generation CTS-V that was built on GM Sigma II Platform . It was a rear-wheel drive , powered by a 6.2-liter (380 in) LSA EATON -supercharged V8 that was based on LS9 V8 from—what was then—recently released Corvette ZR1 . The engine generates 556 horsepower and 551 lb-ft of torque. The second-generation CTS-V broke a Nürburgring lap-record which made it the then fastest production sedan. When asked in 2009 about

2494-484: The second-generation V series, and the short-lived record for a sedan on a demanding racetrack, Cadillac wanted to build on that success with other models in their lineup. This led them to create the Vsport, where potential buyers interested in the V series, could purchase a CTS with increased horsepower and sportier handling, can bypass the 'comfort & luxury' trims and get an entry-level 'performance' model for $ 20k less than

2552-405: The standard Sports Package, includes a sportier suspension, steering wheel, gearshift, wheels, fully-adjustable sport seats, and a sports aerodynamic package. Cars with the "M Sport" option are sportier than their respective stock models, but trade some of the performance and handling of M cars have in exchange for greater comfort. Vehicles with the "M Sport" upgrade feature smaller M badges on

2610-442: The steering wheel is turned more to get the wheels turning, but it will be easier to turn the steering wheel. A lower steering ratio means that the steering wheel is turned less to get the wheels turning, but it will be harder to turn the steering wheel. Larger and heavier vehicles will often have a higher steering ratio, which will make the steering wheel easier to turn. If a truck had a low steering ratio, it would be very hard to turn

2668-406: The steering wheel is turned towards lock, the wheels begin to react more to steering input. A steering quickener is used to modify the steering ratio of factory-installed steering system, which in turn modifies the response time and overall handling of vehicle. When a steering quickener is employed in an automobile, the driver of the automobile can turn the steering wheel a smaller degree compared to

2726-426: The steering wheel. In normal and lighter cars, the wheels are easier to turn, so the steering ratio doesn't have to be as high. In race cars the ratio is typically very low, because the vehicle must respond to steering input much faster than in normal cars. The steering wheel is therefore harder to turn. Variable-ratio steering is a system that uses different ratios on the rack in a rack and pinion steering system. At

2784-417: The sub-brand's flagship, CTS-V and the compact ATS-V. Unlike the first and second generations, where the CTS-V was the biggest update for the V series, the third-generation was the first expansion attempt on the V brand by Cadillac. Typically, the V series served as Cadillac's top-of-the-line trim level, and that mainly was exclusive to the CTS since that's where it all started. However, with such buzz created by

2842-410: The third-generation CTS-V the most powerful Cadillac ever produced up until 2022 with the release of the CT5-V Blackwing, and 630 pound-feet (850 N⋅m). Weighing 4,145 pounds (1,880 kg), the CTS-V equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission was able to do 0–60 miles per hour (0–97 km/h) at 3.6 seconds. The top speed is 200 miles per hour (320 km/h), earning the third-generation CTS-V

2900-572: The unofficial nickname four-door Corvette. The Cadillac ATS-V sedan and coupe fill the gap left by the second-generation CTS-V. Cadillac made the first and second generation CTS smaller than BMW's 5-Series and larger than the 3-Series . However, with the third-generation CTS growing larger to match the size of the 5-Series, Cadillac armed the ATS-V with the LF4 twin-turbo V6 engine, producing 464 horsepower (346 kW) and 445 pound-feet (603 N⋅m). The ATS-V

2958-402: The wheels, front fenders, steering wheel, gearshift and door sills, whilst fully-fledged M cars have larger "M" badges on the grille and/or trunk, wheels, steering wheel, gearshift and door sills with the model number (e.g., " M4 " or " M5 "). The exceptions include the M Roadster and M Coupe models, both Z3, Z4 and 1 Series variants , which only have an "M" badge with no number displayed on

3016-421: The world. The CT6-V does 0–60 miles per hour (0–97 km/h) in 3.8 seconds, just 0.2 seconds more than the third-generation CTS-V. Prior to official production and release, CT6's with the 550hp Blackwing V8 were designated as V-Sport models. Upon official production the model designation was changed to “CT6-V”. CT6's with the 500hp Blackwing V8 were designated as CT6 Platinum. Replacing the CTS and powered by

The 2023 CT5-V Blackwing currently has a hand-built 6.2 liter supercharged 668-horsepower V-8 engine, built in The Performance Build Center at General Motors Corvette Bowling Green, Ky Assembly Plant. A high-performance version of the full-sized Cadillac Escalade SUV, the Escalade-V, was announced in late January 2022 for

3132-455: Was mated to a driver-adjustable transmission with two shifting modes, larger Brembo brakes, larger ten-spoke alloy wheels (18 in × 8.5" front, 19 in × 9.5" rear), Pirelli run-flat tires , a faster steering ratio , and a stiffer suspension than the standard STS. The second-generation V series was exclusive to the CTS since the STS and XLR were rolled out of production. For 2009, Cadillac introduced

3190-604: Was necessary, not only to rival competition and display Cadillac's resurgence, but also to pull young and new customers to Cadillac. In 2004, the first-ever Cadillac V-Series was the CTS-V, which appeared in the movie The Matrix . The first V-series model of the Cadillac family was the CTS , which was built on GM Sigma Platform like the core model but given the GM LS engine from the C5-generation Corvette Z06 , along with its

3248-460: Was struggling against imports from Europe and Japan. GM was eager to bring Cadillac back to its mantra "Standard of the World" and the new 'Art & Science' design language that matured in the late nineties auto shows gave the brand an aggressive and edgy leap ahead that looked promising at that time. The team assigned to create the first generation CTS recognized early on that a high-performance variant

As time passed, BMW M began to supplement BMW's vehicle portfolio with specially modified higher trim models, for which they are now most known by the general public. These M-badged cars traditionally include modified engines, transmissions, suspensions, interior trims, aerodynamics, and exterior modifications to set them apart from their counterparts. All M models are tested and tuned at BMW's private facility at
