112-481: The college's focus is on undergraduate education . When it transitioned to a baccalaureate institution in 2001, BYU-Idaho offered about 50 bachelor's degrees and 19 associate degrees . As of 2024, the institution offers 102 bachelor's degrees (5 of which are online), 22 associate degrees, and 6 other online degrees. It operates on a three-semester system known as "tracks." The college is broadly organized into 35 departments within six colleges. Its parent organization,

224-628: A bachelor's and master's degree is being introduced by the Bologna process . Under the new Bologna reform, universities in Europe are introducing the Bachelor level (BA or BS) degree, often by dividing a five-year Master-level program into two parts (three-year Bachelor's + two-year Master's), where students are not obligated to continue with the second Master's-degree part. These new bachelor's degrees are similar in structure to British bachelor's degrees. If there

336-1311: A bachelor's degree 's diploma , which usually takes four or, in the case of Law , Veterinary , Geology and Engineering , five years to complete; or a professional diploma, which normally require five or, in the case of medicine , six years to complete. In the United States , undergraduate education refers to a student who is studying for a bachelor's degree. The most common bachelor's degrees are Bachelor of Arts ( BA /AB) and Bachelor of Science ( BS /SB), but other degrees such as Bachelor of Fine Arts ( BFA ), Bachelor of Business Administration ( BBA ), Bachelor of Music ( BM ), Bachelor of Social Work ( BSW ), Bachelor of Engineering/Bachelor of Science in Engineering ( BEng /BSE), Bachelor of Science in Nursing ( BSN ), Bachelor of Business Administration/Bachelor of Science in Business Administration ( BBA /BSBA), Bachelor of Education ( Ed.B ), Bachelor of Liberal Arts ( BLA /ALB), and Bachelor of Architecture ( BArch ) are also possible. Most commonly these degrees require four years of full-time study after high school . An additional accolade to

448-663: A probate judge . When Bessie went off to BYA, Manwaring discovered that he missed her terribly. He began to take more interest in LDS Church affairs and considered how he might gain more education. Over the next few years, he alternated between work on the railroad and going to school with Bessie. In the summer of 1898, just after turning twenty-one, he had gone back to the railroad to save for his sophomore year of high school. Then he received an unexpected letter. The return address said "Box B, Salt Lake City, Utah." As every LDS Church member of that and several later generations knew, such

560-482: A university of applied sciences . These two institutions differ from each other in the level students learn abstract concepts. Education at universities is aimed at research and fundamental principles while at universities of applied sciences it concentrates on applying knowledge in a vocation. Universities of applied sciences typically do not offer master and PhD programs. Students in Scotland usually enter university in

The Teton Lodge and Quickwater Lodge near Victor, Idaho , are utilized as student leadership and service centers. The main campus includes a planetarium , an arboretum , and geology and wildlife museums. The college also operates several athletic fields and facilities around campus which are used to support intramural programs and

784-618: A certain level of income, and with the state paying all fees for students from the poorest backgrounds. UK students are generally entitled to student loans for maintenance with repayment contingent on income. Unlike in other European countries, the British government does not own the universities' assets and university staff are not civil servants. United Kingdom universities are therefore better described as autonomous, intellectually-independent institutions with public funding, rather than public universities per se. The crown does not control syllabi, with

896-557: A college must meet before it is allowed to call itself a university. Institutions seeking to grow have pursued various steps to turn two-year junior colleges into community colleges, community colleges into four-year colleges, awarding baccalaureate degrees, sometimes while still a community college, and colleges into universities, with graduate (post-baccalaureate) programs. In Bangladesh , three-year undergraduate programs are known as Degree (Pass) courses and four-year undergraduate programs are known as Honours courses. In Hong Kong ,

1008-437: A competitive (or, as the school uses, "intracollegiate") athletics program which functions as part of Student Activities. Several teams from within the school compete against one another in a variety of sports throughout the year, complete with regular seasons and playoffs. The atmosphere at BYU–Idaho is different from most other universities due to its affiliation with the LDS Church. For example, almost every Tuesday that school

1120-571: A competitive entrance exam known as Vestibular (a concept somewhat similar to the Baccalauréat in France). A later system introduced in 2009, adopted by most federal universities, uses the high school national examination ( ENEM ) result as part or a replacement of the Vestibular grade. Depending on the chosen course, upon graduating the student is granted: a technologist diploma, three years to complete,

1232-478: A decade of facing closure, the church decided to keep Ricks College open. The college emerged with the support of local patrons and accreditation by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges in 1936. The 1950s brought renewed consideration of closing the college and possibly moving it. However, church president David O. McKay decided against this course of action after a visit to the campus. 1344-418: A farm operation, with land south of Rexburg. But the post-World War I recession hit rural areas particularly hard and they ended up deeply in debt. Even so, Manwaring took a leave of absence from the school in 1922 and went back to BYU to complete a master's degree . He returned to Ricks for a year of teaching and then moved to Berkeley, California , to work on a Ph.D. degree. Despite good academic progress,

1456-653: A fast pace by adding nearly 20,000 colleges and more than 8 million students in a decade from 2000–01 to 2010–11. As of 2020, India has over 1000 universities, with a break up of 54 central universities , 416 state universities , 125 deemed universities , 361 private universities , 7 Institute under State Legislature Act , and 159 Institutes of National Importance which include IIMs, AIIMS, IITs, IIITs, IISERs and NITs among others. Other institutions include 52,627 colleges as government degree colleges , private colleges, standalone institutes and post-graduate research institutions, functioning under these universities as reported by

The pre-primary or preparatory classes, called kachi (literally, unripe) or Nursery school , were formally integrated into the education system in 1988. Students in England , Wales , and Northern Ireland may usually enter university from the age of eighteen, often having studied A-levels and thus having had thirteen to fifteen years of schooling. Occasionally students who finish A Level or equivalent qualifications early (after skipping

1680-441: A graduate course at Columbia University and had a very pleasant and profitable summer." The next few years were perhaps the best of Manwaring's tenure, with old structures being renovated and new ones added. In 1941, a year before his sixty-fifth birthday, he suggested to school authorities that they should all prepare for his retirement from the presidency on that birthday. They agreed but, of course, events intervened. The entry of

1792-606: A letter was Manwaring's call to go on a mission for the church. He was granted six months to work and save enough to pay his mission expenses. Manwaring left Utah in February 1899. After three weeks in Sydney , Australia , he spent his mission years in Tasmania , prior to returning to Utah in March 1903. The returned missionary found it difficult to fit in with the rough men he had worked with on

1904-465: A mean disposition. Yet he managed his money wisely and avoided associations with what were then called "loose women." In the spring of 1894, Hyrum (then 17), "accidentally dated" – his words – a local girl named Bessie Bird, taking her to a community dance. He does not explain his choice of terms in his memoir, other than stating that she was very young, under fifteen. A week later, they met again by "another mere accident." These chance meetings changed

2016-511: A point where its future was assured. After retiring from the presidency in 1944, Manwaring continued to teach, and take classes himself, until near his death. Hyrum Wilkins Manwaring was born June 23, 1877, in Granger, Utah, an early town that is now part of West Valley City, Utah . His father, Herbert, came to the U.S. from Sandbach , England in 1869. His mother, Clarissa Wilkins, was the daughter of Charles Wilkins, also an emigrant from England. He

2128-417: A profession. In some states considerable attention has been given to make sure that community college courses in fact prepare the students for the continuation courses they will encounter at the local college; this process of bringing courses into sequence is called articulation . Some community colleges have automatic enrollment agreements with a local college or university, where the community college provides

2240-510: A section hand on the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad , which was then building branch lines to various Utah coal mines. Despite his youth – he was just fifteen years old – Hyrum held his own and was able to earn a man's wages. However, living in a bunkhouse with "rough, profane men," Hyrum was subjected to many temptations. He later admitted that he had indulged in chewing and smoking tobacco, gotten drunk with "the boys," and sometimes exhibited

2352-539: A short leave of absence at the University of California to continue his doctoral studies. During his absence, Manwaring served the college as acting president. He taught full-time at Ricks until 1953. After that, he handled a part-time load until his death in 1956. The Hyrum Manwaring Center on the campus of BYU–Idaho is named for him. It first went into operation as the Hyrum Manwaring Student Center in

2464-434: A short period of time in a relevant industry before students complete their studies. Taking a sandwich course may make the course last a year longer than it would otherwise. With very few exceptions , nearly all universities with the power to award degrees are heavily state financed. However, they also rely on tuition fees set by the government at a maximum index-linked level, repayable after graduation contingent on attaining

2576-484: A spiritually uplifting message. The school's honor code also requires students to regularly attend church services, which are held every Sunday. Until the construction of the Rexburg Idaho Temple in 2008, BYU–Idaho had been the only college or university affiliated with the LDS Church that did not have a nearby temple. Despite its transition from Ricks College to BYU-Idaho, leaders of the college have maintained

2688-598: A stake academy, its purpose was that of a modern secondary school as public schools had not yet been established. As the population grew, it became necessary to divide the geographical area designated by the Church as the Bannock Stake. The Fremont Stake was created, and thus in 1898 the school was renamed the Fremont Stake Academy. In 1903, the school was renamed again as Ricks Academy in honor of Thomas Ricks ,

2800-724: A strong northern climate in which winter dominates, and as such, winter sports such as downhill and cross-country skiing and snowboarding are popular. There are two nearby ski resorts, Grand Targhee and Kelly Canyon , which are frequented by students. However, Rexburg also experiences warm summers that are ideal for many outdoor recreational activities. The proximity of BYU-Idaho to both Grand Teton and Yellowstone national park, along with other state parks, national forests and nearby rivers make hiking, fishing, camping, mountain biking, and river floats popular summertime activities. All students and faculty, regardless of religion, are required to agree to adhere to an honor code . Early forms of

2912-660: A student or faculty member's endorsement for any reason, which may lead to suspension or expulsion from the college. Single students are required to live in housing that is approved by the college. All approved housing options are located within a mile of the college. Co-ed housing is prohibited according to the honor code but some complexes have separate buildings for men and women. Married students are not required to live in approved housing and may live wherever they choose. As with most higher education institutions, full-time students are required to have health insurance. In fall 2019, BYU–Idaho announced that students may no longer receive

3024-412: A student passes the course but fails to do so sufficiently well for third class honours to be awarded he will be awarded with an ordinary degree. It is possible to use the abbreviation "Hons" after the degree postnominals to indicate that the degree has been passed with honours and is not an ordinary degree. Many universities offer sandwich courses or an extramural year, which offer work placements for

3136-559: A two-year community college before further study at a four-year college or university. In most states, community colleges are operated either by a division of the state university or by local special districts subject to guidance from a state agency. Community colleges award associate degrees of different types, some intended to prepare students to transfer to four-year institutions (e.g. Associate of Arts (AA), Associate of Science (AS)), and others intended to provide vocational skills and training for students wishing to enter into or advance in

3248-561: A visit in early 1936 and was greatly impressed. Full accreditation followed in the spring. Still, the give-away campaign continued. The 1937 bill passed the House (by a smaller margin than in 1935), but failed in the Senate. Meanwhile, the school budget continued to decline. Although Manwaring felt like the church had "virtually closed the school," he travelled to Salt Lake City to make a personal appeal to save it. By then, church leaders had begun to heed

3360-451: A waiver that allows Medicaid to qualify as their health coverage. The decision brought significant media coverage. Students would have to seek other health insurance options, which may include purchasing the school's student health plan. BYU–Idaho later reversed its decision, such that Medicaid would qualify under the requirement for students to have insurance. As of Fall 2017, BYU–Idaho had approximately 200,000 alumni, including those from

The college also established a "three-track" system which admits students on a specific track of two semesters (including the Spring semester) rather than the standard fall and winter semesters. Among other changes to campus facilities to accommodate

3696-538: Is a separate undergraduate degree, higher degrees (License, Master, Doctorat) can be gained after completing the undergraduate degree. In the traditional German system, there were no undergraduate degrees in some fields, such as engineering: students continued to Master's level education without any administrative breakpoints, and employers would not consider half-finished master's degrees. The Bachelor's phase in The Netherlands can be fulfilled either at university or at

3808-662: Is divided into two stages; associate degree 's level first-half two years and bachelor 's level second-half two years. Bachelor's degrees are awarded only by universities and NIAD-QE . In Pakistan , it generally requires four years to complete a Bachelor's degree in Arts, Sciences, Dentistry, Engineering or Business Administration such as BA , BS , BDS , BE/BS/BSc Engineering or BBA and five years for bachelor's degrees in medicine ( MBBS ), Physiotherapy ( DPT ), Pharmacy ( Pharm.D ) and Architecture ( B.Arch. ) after successfully completing 12 years of schooling. 4 years bachelor's degree

Speakers are selected from the campus and local communities, as well as from church general authorities who share

4032-403: Is known as an undergraduate student while a student pursuing a master's or doctoral degree is a graduate student . Upon completion of courses and other requirements of an undergraduate program , the student would earn the corresponding degree . In some other educational systems, undergraduate education is postsecondary education up to and including the level of a master's degree ; this

4144-557: Is not usually admitted to the degree of bachelor. Master's degrees conferred after extended programs are not to be conflated with the degree of Master of Arts conferred at Oxbridge and Dublin , which is not a substantive qualification, but reflects the ancient practice of those three universities of promoting Bachelors of Arts to Masters of Arts (and thus full membership of the university) six or seven years after matriculation. Honours degrees and integrated master's degrees are awarded with 1st, upper 2nd, lower 2nd or 3rd class honours . If

4480-729: Is the case for some science courses in Britain and some medicine courses in Europe. In Nigeria , undergraduate degrees (excluding Medicine, Medical Laboratory Science, Nursing, Engineering, Law and Architecture) are four-year-based courses. Medicine (MBBS) and Architecture normally take six years to complete studies while Medical Laboratory Science, Nursing, Law and Engineering courses take five years to complete studies, usually, all six years are taken to improve their chances. Undergraduate nursing degrees or diplomas usually take two to four years and sometimes 5 years to complete, whereas graduate degrees are an additional two years or more. In South Africa ,

4592-462: Is the same as in the rest of UK. In many other, particularly continental European systems, an "undergraduate" degree in the American sense does not exist. Because students are expected to have received a sound general education at the secondary level, in a school such as a gymnasium or lycee , students in Europe enroll in a specific course of studies they wish to pursue upon entry into a university. It was announced in June 2000 that the athletics program would be phased out as part of the change from a junior college to a four-year college, due mainly to the costs associated with running a college athletic department, and the desire to develop a more comprehensive participatory student activities program. Since becoming a four-year institution, BYU-Idaho no longer hosts intercollegiate athletic teams but instead developed

5152-688: The University of Delaware also award associate degrees. In the United States, "college" and "university" are terms used differently in different states; New York's terminology is especially confusing (see University of the State of New York ). A university is usually larger than a college, and has programs at the graduate level, but the distinction is not clear-cut. Some colleges (like Smith College ) award graduate degrees, for example, and some colleges are larger than some universities. Some states have requirements

5264-446: The president of the LDS Church's Bannock Stake at the time it was founded and the chairman of the school's first Board of Education. By the early twentieth century, stake academies had largely been discontinued as public schools became more established in the western United States. 5376-405: The 1976 Teton Dam flood, Ricks College was used as a center for disaster relief operations. By the late twentieth century, the college had become the largest private junior college in the country with over 7,500 students. On June 21, 2000, the LDS Church announced that Ricks College would become a four-year institution known as Brigham Young University–Idaho. This change became official just over

5488-582: The Academcy's principal. Over three-quarters of the faculty members were dismissed, so the new principal found that he had nine teaching positions to fill. Christenson persuaded Manwaring to accept a position to head the English Department at Ricks. Neither Hyrum nor Bessie had ever been to Rexburg and knew little about the Academy. Perhaps not coincidentally, Manwaring was asked to deliver the "oration" at Ricks

5600-526: The BYU Honor Code are found as far back as the days of the Brigham Young Academy and educator Karl G. Maeser . Students sit for the Certificate of Education examinations at around sixteen years of age, and the Advanced-level, or A-level examinations at around eighteen, then follow by three years of undergraduate education, except for a few specific fields, such as medicine, nursing and law. This is due to be changed, with five-year secondary education and two-year matriculation examination combined and shortened to six years matriculation , and undergraduate education lengthened to four years. Students may be able to receive general education in their first years in universities, more akin to

6048-449: The LDS Church began to close, or hand over, its academies to state governments because of better established public education and economic strains on the church. Ricks College was offered as a gift from the church to the state of Idaho at the 1931 legislative session, but was rejected. Bills handing over Ricks College to the state of Idaho were presented at three more legislative sessions, (1933, 1935, 1937), but all were rejected. After almost

Thus, in the summer of 1929, he took a leave of absence from Ricks to attend George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He sold everything he owned in Idaho and moved his family across the country. His first year of studies proved very encouraging. So much so that Manwaring had decided he would not return to Rexburg. He taught college English classes while he began graduate work. A second son, Eugune, was born during this period. An event in late March, 1914, proved pivotal in Manwaring's life. The Ricks Academy Board of Education had decided to make sweeping changes in their faculty. They persuaded Andrew B. Christenson , who taught Biblical History and Literature at BYU, to become

The precursor to BYU–Idaho, like several other colleges and universities across the mountain west, was established as a " stake academy" first, as Mormon settlers colonized the eastern Snake River Plain in the 1880s. As

7840-432: The college's students are members of the LDS Church and all students attending BYU–Idaho agree to follow an honor code that mandates behavior in line with the LDS Church's teachings. A significant percentage of the student body take an 18-month (women) or 24-month (men) hiatus from their studies to serve as missionaries . Tuition rates are generally lower than those at similar universities, due largely to funding provided by

7952-589: The continental European system; free public schools are available from kindergarten up to postgraduation, both as a right established in Article 6, caput of the Brazilian Constitution and as a duty of the State in Article 208, Items I, IV and V, of the Brazilian Constitution. Students choose their specific course of studies before joining the university. Admission to university is obtained by means of

8064-569: The degree of Bachelor of Arts at other universities and does not require the level of study necessitated for the other degrees of master awarded by these universities. The degree instead reflects the ancient traditions of these universities. In the sciences, students usually read for the degree of bachelor, which usually takes four years. However, as with the rest of the UK, integrated master's degrees are popular in science and engineering, although in Scotland they last for five years. Degree classification

8176-412: The degree of bachelor, which usually takes three years; however, in the sciences and engineering, integrated courses covering both undergraduate level and advanced degree level leading to the degree of master , usually taking four years and including a research project or dissertation , are popular. Given the integrated nature of these programs someone who gains a master's degree via an integrated program

8288-418: The desire to preserve what they call the "Spirit of Ricks," a campus tradition of service, hard work, friendliness, compassion and cooperation. The college's relative geographic isolation from a metropolitan area, combined with the strong moral standards taught and encouraged by the college and its sponsoring organization, contribute to a unique student culture with some similarities to the other campuses owned by

8400-584: The draft. Manwaring stepped up his recruitment efforts, highlighting the fact that Ricks offered officer training programs for the Army and the Navy. The war also impacted the faculty, three of whom were called to active duty. None of them went to combat units, but someone had to fill those vacancies in the classrooms. Naturally, students and faculty participated in all the "home front" activities: war bond promotion, scrap metal and rubber drives, " Victory Gardens ," and more. But

8512-553: The end of the 1945 school year, Manwaring spoke during the graduation exercise. He would continue to speak at selected school events over the next several years. In 1947, Manwaring and his wife spent the summer in California, taking classes at the Berkeley and Los Angeles campuses of the University of California . Two years later, they both attended summer sessions at the University of Colorado at Boulder. In early 1950, Clarke spent

8624-469: The exception of teacher training. The crown restricts the power to award degrees to those with a royal charter , in the case of traditional universities, or authorization from the Secretary of State for Universities , in the case of modern universities . Universities accredited in foreign countries, such as Richmond University are, however, free to operate. In many countries, the English distinction between

Facilities include a football and track stadium, tennis courts, general use fields and the John Hart Physical Education building, which seats 4,000 in its main gym and is used for athletic events and concerts. The building also includes a large fitness center, a pool, auxiliary gymnasiums, racquetball courts and equipment room, all of which are open to students, faculty and staff. On December 17, 2010,

8848-436: The family returned to Rexburg after just one year. Manwaring felt a strong need to show that he was actively paying off his debts. During this same period, Ricks began to phase out its high school classes. As part of that change, in February 1923, the institution became simply Ricks College. Over the next several years, the institution continued to grow and gain new facilities. Manwaring served in several responsible positions in

8960-518: The fields of arts, commerce, science etc., and the four-year programs are mostly in the fields of technology, engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, agriculture etc. However, for medicine, law and architecture, the period has been five years. The possessor of the first UG is referred to as graduate and that of the PG degree as post-graduate. Other than UG and PG there are various 1 to 2 year diploma courses available. Indian higher education system has expanded at

9072-453: The first two years of study and the university provides the remaining years of study, sometimes all on one campus. The community colleges award associate degrees, while universities and colleges award the bachelor's. However, some community colleges, such as Brazosport College in Lake Jackson, Texas offer bachelor's degrees along with associate degrees. Conversely, some universities such as

9184-399: The following July. His initial impression of the town and the campus left him "stunned, bewildered, and seriously disappointed." However, he then said he caught a vision of a bright future for the institution, a dream strengthened when he met the "energetic and eager" student body. Besides his departmental teaching and administrative duties, Manwaring served as a student counselor and oversaw

9296-437: The following five stages: The Primary school lasting five years for children 5–10 years old in grades one to five; a Middle school of three years for children 10 to 13 years old, covering grades six through eight; a two-year secondary, or Matriculation consists of grades nine and ten, for children 13 to 15 years old; a two-year higher secondary, or Intermediate college , leading to an F.A. in arts or F.Sc. in science; and

9408-403: The four instructors assigned to that duty. Yet despite that sign of progress, rumors had also begun to suggest that the church might close the college. Church finances were known to be less than robust and schools elsewhere were indeed being closed. Officials rushed to deny those rumors, but many doubters remained. As the spring of 1930 approached, Manwaring received a letter from the chairman of

9520-498: The government, and helps coordinate between the centre and the state. Accreditation for higher learning is overseen by 15 autonomous institutions established by the University Grants Commission (UGC). In India, the graduation system is classified into two parts: Undergraduate (UG) and Postgraduate (PG). It takes three or four years to complete an undergraduate degree . The three-year undergraduate programs are mostly in

9632-524: The honor code is part of the application process for all Latter-day Saint affiliated schools and must be adhered to by all students, faculty, and staff. Students and faculty found in violation of standards are either warned or called to meet with representatives of the honor council. In rare cases, students and faculty can be expelled from the college for excessive misbehavior. In addition to the general honor code, other prohibited items include bib overalls , baseball caps (common at all Latter-day Saint schools,

9744-559: The library's circulation services annually. In support of the fine arts and entertainment, the campus also includes the Ruth H. Barrus Concert Hall which houses the acclaimed Ruffatti organ, the third largest organ owned by the Church after those housed in the Salt Lake Tabernacle and Conference Center , respectively. KBYI -FM, a 100,000 watt public radio station, also broadcasts to eastern Idaho and parts of Wyoming and Montana from

9856-466: The men's athletic programs mostly reverted to intramural games because there were not enough males to fill out the teams. At school dances, girls danced with girls and "students who brought male relatives to dances were much appreciated." Manwaring relinquished his role as president after the end of the 1944 school year. The new president, John L. Clarke , arrived on campus in mid-August 1944. Meanwhile, Manwaring had visited LDS Church officials all over

9968-465: The next three years, Hyrum earned his teaching certificate, took on increased responsibilities (and salary) at the prep school, and progressed toward a college degree. He had shown a talent for dramatics, debating and public speaking, all of which opened up other opportunities. Manwaring's plan to complete his degree was interrupted at the end of the 1907-1908 school year, when George H. Brimhall , BYU's president, stated he had been appointed principal of

10080-519: The period when the institution functioned as an academy (equivalent to a modern high school ). The college's alumni include two-time Olympic gold medalist in Greco-Roman wrestling (2000) Rulon Gardner , Idaho State Senator Fred S. Martin , comedian Ryan Hamilton and professional baseball player Matt Lindstrom . Another alumnus is Marion G. Romney , a former counselor in the First Presidency of

10192-469: The purpose of assessing whether a student has the appropriate capacities in order to complete the course. At some Swedish universities (such as the Royal Institute of Technology ), PhD courses are sometimes referred to as "graduate courses", whereas courses for other students (up to master level) sometimes are referred to as "undergraduate courses". The system at many Finnish universities is similar. In

10304-552: The railroad. But he endured and on September 16, 1903, Hyrum and Bessie Bird were married in the Salt Lake Temple . Their first child, H. Laurance, was born in April 1905, about the time when Hyrum completed his high school courses at BYA. He then began teaching classes himself in the preparatory school. The couple made ends meet financially with his teaching stipend, renting rooms to other students, and summer jobs for both of them. Over

10416-486: The region. One could see the war climaxing and expected it to end soon. A substantial surge in enrollment was expected, and the school would need even more support to meet the expanded demand. Meanwhile, with his top-level administrative duties eased, Manwaring could focus more on teaching. He received "a very nice office" and took over as head of the Psychology Department. He also carried a full teaching load. At

10528-431: The school adjusted the academic calendar equalizing the amount of time available in each semester, lengthening the class periods, and opening class offerings in the spring to allow more students to attend in the spring semester. There is also a short, seven week summer session with accelerated class schedules. BYU-Idaho also offers "fast grad" which allows students to attend all semesters and finish their degree sooner. This

10640-490: The school's "Rethinking Education" campaign. When a student is admitted to BYU–Idaho, they are also assigned to a specific two-semester "track," (fall-winter, winter-spring, or spring-fall) based partly on preference, degree program, and availability to balance. Initially, the fall and winter semesters were slightly longer (and thus more heavily attended) than the summer semester and had more class options. Beginning in January 2007,

10752-435: The six colleges, there are thirty-three departments, offering over eighty-seven bachelor-level programs and twenty associate-degree programs. BYU–Idaho's engineering programs rank in the top 75 nationally. The academic year is divided into three equal semesters (fall, winter, spring) of fourteen weeks and is known as the "three-track" system. It was instituted in 2001 as part of the transition from Ricks College to BYU-Idaho and

10864-459: The state of Idaho , with the majority of students coming from five states: Idaho 27%, California 14%, Utah 10%, Washington 8%, and Arizona 4.5%. Thus, the student body at BYU–Idaho is notably homogeneous—not only due to its geographic representation but also due to ethnicity and religion. During the Fall 2016 semester, 83% of the students were white . Moreover, during the Fall 2016 semester, 99.7% of

10976-404: The state of Idaho. At that point, it was known as Ricks Normal College with George S. Romney as its first president. In 1923, it was renamed Ricks College and functioned as a two-year junior college. It would serve as a junior college for most of the remainder of the twentieth century, except for a brief period from 1948 to 1956 when it operated as a four-year institution. In the 1920s and 1930s,

11088-440: The state of Idaho. Proponents introduced a bill to that effect. However, the idea was hotly opposed by supporters of the existing state schools, who did not want the education budget to be shared by another institution. The vote was close, but the bill failed. Manwaring pushed hard to increase enrollment, improve class offerings, and nurture the spiritual life of the students. The school's enrollment did increase, but efforts to have

11200-421: The state take over continued. Another bill was introduced in the 1933 legislature but withdrawn when supporters saw they had no hope of winning. The 1935 bill died when it was sent to the Senate finance committee. Despite the uncertain future, Manwaring pressed ahead with preparations to have the school formally accredited by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges. The association's representative made

11312-427: The student activities program. The first summer after he arrived, Manwaring was tasked with writing a new catalog for the school. He also exercised his speaking skills for LDS Church audiences all over the region. Whenever possible, he turned these speaking engagements into recruiting visits. Christenson encouraged all of this, since he was determined to elevate Ricks to at least a junior college. That same summer, Gladys

11424-774: The students were members of the LDS Church. Known as the Vikings, Ricks College fielded an intercollegiate athletics program from 1919 to 2002 in the National Junior College Athletic Association , earning 17 national championships, 61 individual national titles, and producing nearly 100 first-team All-Americans. National title wins included Women's Cross Country (1988, 1989, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001), Men's Cross Country (1965, 1966, 1986, 1999, 2000, 2001), Women's Track and Field (1997), and Women's Volleyball (1974; AIAW ). More than 25 alumni who played football for Ricks went on to play professionally in

11536-611: The summer after that, Christenson left and George S. Romney became the new principal. Early in his tenure, the school was certified by the state for teacher education and was thereafter known as Ricks Normal College. (After this, Romney was known as the "president" of Ricks.) With those changes, Manwaring moved from the Academy English Department to become Dean of the Department of Psychology and Education. Outside his school duties, Manwaring and one of his brothers invested in

11648-415: The undergraduate system usually has a three-year undergraduate bachelor's degree, with two or three majors. (There are exceptions, such as the medical qualification (MBChB), which is six years, and Engineering which is four.) A fourth year, known as an Honours year, is considered a post-graduate degree. It is usually course-driven, although may include a project or thesis. Brazil follows the major traits of

11760-471: The year they turn eighteen, with many starting at seventeen; courses take a year longer than in the rest of the UK. At the older universities the degree of Master of Arts is conferred in the arts subjects after four years while the newer universities instead confer the degree of Bachelor of Arts . The degree of Master of Arts conferred by the Ancient Scottish Universities is equivalent to

11872-479: The young man's life. Bessie had done very well in school, graduating from grade school with high honors. In the fall, she planned to start high school at the Brigham Young Academy (BYA). Although BYA then mostly taught high school level classes, it is considered a precursor to Brigham Young University (BYU). Her father, Charles Monroe Bird, was an influential man, both in the local LDS Church community and as

11984-491: Was born into the Manwaring family. Christenson's wish was fulfilled when two years of college work were approved for the school, to start in the fall of 1916. However, part of the principal's agreement with the Board of Education had been that he would stay only two years. Although he agreed to stay for another academic year, he spent much of that time traveling. In his absence, Manwaring more or less served as acting principal. During

12096-451: Was not at all sure the college would even survive. However, he finally said "yes" anyway. Despite the impression conveyed in the letter, a promotion was not guaranteed. Romney planned to study at the University of Chicago . When he addressed the Board at a special July meeting, Romney gave no indication of what his subsequent plans were. When the Board chairman spoke, he said only that Manwaring had agreed to be acting president. Manwaring

12208-490: Was the oldest in a family of eight boys and had to begin working at an early age. That severely crippled his educational opportunities. Hyrum had to leave school after the sixth grade. Around 1890, homesteads near Salt Lake City entered what Hyrum called "a land boom." So his father sold their place and they moved to the Springville - Mapleton area, south of Provo . A couple years later, Manwaring left home for good to become

12320-522: Was the president of Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho , from 1930 to 1944. Ricks College was the precursor to today's Brigham Young University–Idaho , a private university operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Manwaring overcame delayed schooling – he was almost 29 when he graduated from high school – to become a dedicated champion of education. He led Ricks College through difficult times, when dissolution seemed inevitable, to

12432-598: Was used mainly for cases of cheating and academic dishonesty . Ernest L. Wilkinson expanded the honor code in 1957 to include other school standards (at the time, Wilkinson, as president of BYU, and the director of what was then the Unified Church School System, had some authority over all of the church's schools). The honor code today includes rules regarding dress, grooming, and academic honesty; it also prohibits extra-marital sex and homosexual behavior, alcohol, coffee, tea, and drugs. A signed commitment to live

12544-412: Was very well received in his new job, especially after he made some small changes that proved quite popular. Then, in the spring of 1931, he was named president of Ricks College. By then, the potential future of the school had taken a worrisome turn. Church finances remained somewhat precarious, so officials instructed the local Board to explore the possibility of giving (almost literally) the institution to
