63-596: Ten matches were contested at the event, including one on The Buy In pre-show . In the main event, "Hangman" Adam Page defeated Kenny Omega to win the AEW World Championship . In other prominent matches, CM Punk defeated Eddie Kingston , Bryan Danielson defeated Miro by technical submission in the AEW World Championship Eliminator Tournament final match, and in the opening bout, MJF defeated Darby Allin . The event also saw

126-436: A Beast Bomb from Rose with a roll-up to win the match. The actual pay-per-view opened with MJF facing Darby Allin. When Allin attempted a Code Red , MJF reversed with a powerbomb kneebreaker. Both men were later on the apron, Allin went for a suplex ; but MJF avoided it and performed a Tombstone Piledriver on Allin. Both men strived several roll-up attempts, with neither getting the pinfall. Moments later, Allin performed

189-523: A Coffin Drop on MJF outside the ring. Back in the ring, Allin went for another Coffin Drop, but MJF got his knees up. Wardlow and Shawn Spears ran towards ringside, but Sting prevented them from intervening and attacked both men with his baseball bat . MJF went to ringside and grabbed Allin's skateboard . Allin would then grab the skateboard and hand it to the referee, which gave MJF enough time to struck Allin with his Dynamite Diamond Ring. MJF then performed

252-488: A Spike Piledriver on Fénix for a nearfall. In the closing moments, Wheeler tried to steal the win with a pin using the ropes, but the referee caught Wheeler's tactics. In the end, The Lucha Brothers performed a Fear Factor piledriver on Wheeler to retain the championships. The third match saw the AEW World Championship Eliminator Tournament final match between Bryan Danielson and Miro, with

315-536: A headlock takeover on Allin for the pinfall victory. Next, The Lucha Brothers ( Penta El Zero Miedo and Rey Fénix ) (accompanied by Alex Abrahantes ) defended the AEW World Tag Team Championship against FTR ( Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler ) (accompanied by Tully Blanchard ). Penta performed the Three Amigos on Harwood and Fénix followed up with a Frog Splash for a nearfall . FTR landed

378-463: A reverse DDT on a steel chair . Nick followed with a bulldog to Cage, Luchasaurus then landed a knee strike on the latter and performed a German Suplex on The Young Bucks. The latter poured thumbtacks in Boy's mouth and ran the ropes to kiss Cole on the cheek, followed by a double superkick on Boy for a nearfall. The Superkliq landed a BTE Trigger on Luchasaurus, but Boy broke up the pin. Boy performed

441-505: A superplex on the latter. In the end, Punk performed the Go to Sleep on Kingston to win the match. In the penultimate match, The Inner Circle ( Chris Jericho , Jake Hager , Sammy Guevara , Santana and Ortiz ) faced Men of the Year ( Ethan Page and Scorpio Sky ) and American Top Team ( Junior dos Santos , Andrei Arlovski , and Dan Lambert) in a Minneapolis Street Fight match. Guevara leapt off

504-515: A German Suplex on Nick, Christian followed with a Spear on Matt, and Luchasaurus performed a chokeslam on Cole off the stage onto Nick, Cutler, and Nakazawa. In the end, Boy performed a conchairto on Matt for the pinfall victory. Next, Cody Rhodes and Pac (accompanied by Arn Anderson ) faced Andrade El Idolo and Malakai Black (accompanied by Jose the Assistant). During the match, Pac performed an asai moonsault on Andrade and Black outside

567-400: A backdrop to the studio panel. Single-elimination tournament A single-elimination, knockout , or sudden-death tournament is a type of elimination tournament where the loser of each match-up is immediately eliminated from the tournament. Each winner will play another in the next round, until the final match-up, whose winner becomes the tournament champion(s). Each match-up may be

630-420: A draw may be settled in extra time and eventually by a penalty shootout or by replaying the fixture. Another perceived disadvantage is that most competitors are eliminated after relatively few games. Variations such as the double-elimination tournament allow competitors a single loss while remaining eligible for overall victory. However, losing one game requires the competitor to win more games in order to win

693-456: A major sporting event . They typically feature previews and analysis relating to upcoming games (either a larger fixture, or a single game), including panel discussions, reports filed from the sites of the day's game, interviews with players and other personnel (such as coaches), and other feature segments. The networks that broadcast the NFL were the first networks to create and air pre-game shows. CBS

756-418: A match at Full Gear, which was later confirmed. On The Buy-In pre-show, Hikaru Shida and Thunder Rosa faced Jamie Hayter and Nyla Rose (accompanied by Vickie Guerrero ). Shida was distracted by Serena Deeb , allowing Vickie to hit her with a kendo stick . Rosa took out Hayter to the floor. Back in the ring, Rose performed a Splash on Shida, but Rosa broke up the pinfall . In the end, Shida reversed

819-451: A match between the losers of the semifinal matches called third place playoffs , the winner therein placing third and the loser fourth. Many Olympic single-elimination tournaments feature the bronze medal match if they do not award bronze medals to both losing semifinalists. The FIFA World Cup has long featured the third place match (since 1934 ), though the UEFA Euro has not held one since

882-415: A new 90-minute “Super Bowl Special” before Super Bowl X . The show moved to two hours long in 1984 and featured 11 broadcasters, 13 producers and four directors. FOX created its own pre-game show when it won the rights to broadcast NFC games in 1994. The network hired James Brown to host the show, Fox NFL Sunday , and brought on analysts such as Terry Bradshaw to lead the coverage. In 2006, Brown left

945-494: A possible match-up with the top seed until one round later. MLS' format is identical, except that the conference quarterfinals is a best-of-three series. In some situations, a seeding restriction may be implemented; from 1975 until 1989 in the NFL , and from 1994 until 2011 in MLB there was a rule where at the conference or league semifinal, should the top seed and last seed (wild card) be from

1008-437: A quarter-final from the previous year . Sometimes the remaining competitors in a single-elimination tournament will be "re-seeded" so that the highest surviving seed is made to play the lowest surviving seed in the next round, the second-highest plays the second-lowest, etc. This may be done after each round, or only at selected intervals. In American team sports, for example, the NFL employs this tactic, but MLS , NHL and

1071-618: A single match or several, for example two-legged ties in European sports or best-of series in North American pro sports. Defeated competitors may play no further part after losing, or may participate in "consolation" or "classification" matches against other losers to determine the lower final rankings; for example, a third place playoff between losing semi-finalists. In a shootout poker tournament , there are more than two players competing at each table, and sometimes more than one progresses to

1134-466: A studio, some shows may broadcast from the site of a particular game, usually for marquee events or championship games. ESPN's College GameDay franchise (which it broadcasts for college football and basketball ) regularly broadcasts live from the campuses of schools hosting the day's biggest game (or in some cases, a game that the network wishes to highlight) and—most frequently on its football version—is often attended by an audience of fans that serve as

1197-590: A year later, on the October 6, 2021, episode of Dynamite , Page, won the Casino Ladder match to become the number one contender for the AEW World Championship, still held by Omega. On October 16, the championship match was scheduled for Full Gear. On October 8, AEW announced the return of the AEW World Championship Eliminator Tournament; an eight-man single-elimination tournament culminating at Full Gear with

1260-674: Is 1 v 8, 2 v 7, 3 v 6 and 4 v 5, for example this is used for 16 seeds in the World Snooker Championship and 32 seeds in the World Darts Championship . Some tournaments stray from this, for example it is not the procedure that is followed in most tennis tournaments, where the 1 and 2 seeds are placed in separate brackets, but then the 3 and 4 seeds are assigned to their brackets randomly, and so too are seeds 5 through 8, and so on. This may result in some brackets consisting of stronger players than other brackets, and since only

1323-533: Is first - for example, if sorting the numbers 1-4 ascending, if 4 and 3 meet in the first round, 3 and 1 will lose in the first round and 2 will lose in the second, selecting 4 as the largest number in the set, but insufficient comparisons have been performed to determine which is greater, 1 or 3. Despite this, the candidate that loses in the final round is commonly considered to have taken second place (in this case, 2). When matches are held to determine places or prizes lower than first and second, these typically include

1386-507: Is rare in English itself, with noticeable use in American debate tournaments. The round before the round of sixteen is sometimes called round of thirty-two in English. Terms for this in other languages generally translate as "sixteenth final". Earlier rounds are typically numbered counting forwards from the first round, or by the number of remaining competitors. If some competitors get a bye ,

1449-421: The 1980 edition . Sometimes, contests are also held among the losers of the quarterfinal matches to determine fifth to eighth places. In one scenario, two "consolation semifinal" matches may be conducted, with the winners of these then facing off to determine fifth and sixth places and the losers playing for seventh and eighth; those are used often in qualifying tournaments where only the top five teams advance to

1512-451: The AEW Women's World Championship against Tay Conti . Conti attempted a quick roll-up for a nearfall. Baker performed a Curb Stomp on Conti for a nearfall. Baker applied her glove, but walked into a cutter from Conti for a nearfall. Baker performed an Air Raid Crash slam on Conti through the apron. While Rebel distracted the referee, Hayter pulled Conti out of the ring and threw her into

1575-562: The NBA do not (and neither does the NCAA college basketball tournament ). Although MLB does have enough teams (12) in its playoff tournament where re-seeding would have made a large difference in the matchups; only the WNBA's at the minimum, which is at least four from each conference for a total of 8. The NBA's format calls for the winner of the first-round series between the first and eighth seeds (within each of

1638-538: The AEW debut of Jay Lethal , and also marked the final AEW PPV appearance of Cody Rhodes , who left the company three months later for WWE . The event was highly praised by fans and critics with praise being particularly focused on the main event match between Page and Omega. Full Gear is a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event held annually in November by All Elite Wrestling (AEW) since 2019, generally around

1701-502: The Lucha Brothers-FTR tag team championship match was "outstanding". Brent Brookhouse of CBS Sports thought Full Gear was "incredible" and considered it to be "one of the best events in the young history of the promotion". The main event match was "fantastic", MJF-Allin was a "thriller", Lucha Brothers-FTR was "great", Danielson-Miro was "really good", and CM Punk-Kingston was "a wonderfully told story". He gave minor criticism to

1764-562: The Pac-Rhodes vs. Black-Andrade tag team match, which "wasn't up to the standards of the rest of the show", and The Inner Circle-American Top Team match, which was a "difficult match to rate". Sports journalist Dave Meltzer for the Wrestling Observer Newsletter assigned star ratings to the event, with the main event receiving a 5 1 ⁄ 2 rating, making it the tenth AEW match to be rated 5 stars or more by Meltzer, and

1827-437: The belt, but Page avoided it and performed a Dead Eye . A new referee ran to the ring, and counted a nearfall. Omega landed Kawada kicks, and Page fired up and landed a lariat on Omega. The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson) then slowly made their way down to the ringside. Hangman attempted for another Buckshot Lariat, but Omega intercepted it with a V-Trigger . Omega went for a One Winged Angel, but Hangman performed

1890-453: The competition, seeding is often used to prevent this. Brackets are set up so that the top two seeds could not possibly meet until the final round (should both advance that far), none of the top four can meet prior to the semifinals, and so on. If no seeding is used, the tournament is called a random knockout tournament. Standard seeding pairs the highest and lowest, then second highest and second lowest and so on, for an 8 seed tournament this

1953-405: The fifth to surpass his 5 star rating scale. The falls count anywhere match between Christian Cage and Jurassic Express and The Superkliq was also rated 5 stars, making Full Gear the first AEW event to feature more than one match to attain the rating. Elsewhere on the card, MJF-Allin, CM Punk-Kingston, and Danielson-Miro all received a 4 1 ⁄ 2 star rating. The lowest rated match of the night

2016-449: The group, Page was removed from The Elite by The Young Bucks on the August 27, 2020, episode of Dynamite , after Page had prevented them from winning a match. At the 2020 Full Gear event on November 7, Page faced Omega in the finals of a tournament to determine the number one contender for the AEW World Championship , with Omega winning. Omega would later go on to win the championship. Nearly

2079-512: The ladder and performed a Swanton Bomb on Sky through a table. Page gave Ortiz an Ego’s Edge on the floor in front of Baron Von Raschke , who applied the Iron Claw on him. Lambert celebrated in the ring, Jericho appeared behind him and landed multiple chops . Lambert went for the Walls of Jericho , but Jericho hit him with a kendo stick. In the culmination, Jericho performed a Frog Splash on Lambert for

2142-484: The match, Callis would intervene and attack Page with the referee's vision concealed. Omega leapt off the ropes and performed a powerbomb on Page for a nearfall. Page landed a release German Suplex, which Omega would reply with a Tiger Driver '98 . He then went for a Buckshot Lariat, but Omega pulled the referee in the way of the strike. Callis grabbed the AEW World Championship belt, and tried to hit Page with it. The latter saw it coming, and knocked out Callis. Omega grabbed

2205-639: The members of The Dark Order . Full Gear received critical acclaim from critics. Writing for Sports Illustrated , Justin Barrasso enjoyed the event and thought there was "a lot to like". Barrasso thought the MJF-Darby Allin opening match was "phenomenal" and the "match of the night". Barrasso also wrote that the Page-Omega main event was "captivating", the CM Punk-Kingston match was "short but dramatic", and

2268-501: The move on Omega himself for a nearfall. Page finally landed a Buckshot Lariat to the back of Omega. When Page set up the Buckshot Lariat from the front, Matt nodded at Page; reminiscent of the latter costing The Young Bucks an AEW World Tag Team Championship opportunity at All Out in 2020. In the climax, Page performed a second Buckshot Lariat on Omega to win the title. Following the match, Page celebrated his championship victory with

2331-405: The network to return to CBS and host their pre-game show, The NFL Today . NBC launched its own version of a pre-game show – Grandstand – in 1975, and not only featured NFL programming, but other sporting events around the nation. The show led up to the NFL's 1 p.m. games but covered college football, golf, tennis and many other sports and topics. The network hired Jack Buck to host the show and

2394-415: The next round. Some competitions are held with a pure single-elimination tournament system. Others have many phases, with the last being a single-elimination final stage, often called playoffs . In English , the round in which only eight competitors remain is generally called (with or without hyphenation) the quarter-final round; this is followed by the semi-final round, in which only four are left,

2457-399: The next round; or some method of ranking the four quarterfinal losers might be employed, in which case only one round of additional matches would be held among them, the two highest-ranked therein then playing for fifth and sixth places and the two lowest for seventh and eighth. The number of distinct ways of arranging a single-elimination tournament (as an abstract structure, prior to seeding

2520-414: The opportunity to face every other player/team. Also, if the competitors' performance is variable, that is, it depends on a small, varying factor in addition to the actual strength of the competitors, then not only will it become less likely that the strongest competitor actually wins the tournament, in addition the seeding done by the tournament organizers will play a major part in deciding the winner. As

2583-593: The other. If a small number of teams play in a single elimination tournament, sometimes a consolation bracket is included to allow the eliminated teams to play more than once. This was the format of the Little League World Series until 1992. The format is less suited to games where draws are frequent. In chess , each fixture in a single-elimination tournament must be played over multiple matches, because draws are common , and because white has an advantage over black. In association football , games ending in

2646-583: The players into the tournament) is given by the Wedderburn–Etherington numbers . Thus, for instance, there are three different arrangements for five players: However, the number of arrangements grows quickly for larger numbers of players and not all of them are commonly used. Opponents may be allocated randomly (such as in the FA Cup); however, since the "luck of the draw" may result in the highest-rated competitors being scheduled to face each other early in

2709-571: The regular season (or did not take place, in some cases). In international fencing competitions, it is common to have a group stage . Participants are divided in groups of 6–7 fencers who play a round-robin tournament, and a ranking is calculated from the consolidated group results. Single elimination is seeded from this ranking. The single-elimination format enables a relatively large number of competitors to participate. There are no "dead" matches (perhaps excluding "classification" matches), and no matches where one competitor has more to play for than

2772-404: The ring, Kingston performed an exploder suplex on Punk. They went outside again where Kingston shoved Punk into the ring post, so Punk was busted open. Kingston attempted a Piledriver on the floor, but Punk countered into a back body drop . Punk dove off the apron for a diving clothesline , and tossed Kingston back in the ring. Kingston rained down punches on Punk on the top rope, and performed

2835-524: The ring. Black tagged in Rhodes, who performed a reverse superplex on Andrade off the top rope. Andrade went for a Figure Four Leglock , but Rhodes applied the move on Andrade instead. Black and Rhodes brawled into the crowd, which allowed Pac to take control and perform the Black Arrow on Andrade to win the match. The sixth match saw Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D. (accompanied by Rebel and Jamie Hayter) defending

2898-569: The ropes and broke the hold. Danielson performed a DDT off the top rope, and applied the Guillotine Choke submission on Miro, who passed out; thus Danielson won via technical submission . Following this was a Falls Count Anywhere match between the team of Christian Cage and Jurassic Express ( Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus ) against The Superkliq ( Adam Cole and The Young Bucks ( Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson )) (accompanied by Brandon Cutler and Michael Nakazawa ). Cage hit Cole with

2961-446: The round at which they enter may be named the first round , with the earlier matches called a preliminary round , qualifying round , opening round , or the play-in games . Examples of the diverse names given to concurrent rounds in various select disciplines: Notes: The knockout round of the 2002 FIFA World Cup tournament: Without any additional matches, the only position a single-elimination tournament can reliably determine

3024-399: The same division, they cannot play each other; in that case, the top seed plays the worst division champion; the second-best division champion plays the wild card team. This is due to the scheduling employed for the regular season, in which a team faces any given divisional opponent more often than any given non-divisional opponent – the tournament favors match-ups that took place fewer times in

3087-468: The show didn't just preview that day's NFL games but did investigative pieces on a variety of topics. Pre-game shows generally run for 30 minutes to one hour, though on special occasions (such as championship games), it is not uncommon to air longer pre-game shows (with the Super Bowl now typically airing one across the entire afternoon prior to its evening kickoff). While most pre-game shows are done in

3150-468: The steel steps. Back in the ring, Baker performed another Curb Stomp and applied the Lockjaw submission on Conti, who broke the hold. Both women rolled around into pinfall attempts, and Baker won with a cradle pin to retain the title. After this, CM Punk faced Eddie Kingston. Kingston struck Punk with a spinning back fist before the match began. Both men spilled to the floor and brawled at ringside. Back in

3213-513: The supplementary online streaming shows, Dark and Elevation , and The Young Bucks ' YouTube series Being The Elite . In October 2018, prior to the formation of AEW, Adam Page joined his friends Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks (Matt Jackson and Nick Jackson), forming a group known as The Elite . In January 2020, Page and Omega won the AEW World Tag Team Championship , but lost it later that year. Signs of dissent occurred during this title reign, and after more months of tension within

3276-468: The top 32 players of 128 are seeded in Tennis Grand Slam tournaments, it can happen that the 33rd-best player in a 128-player field could end up playing the top seed in the first round. An example of this occurring was when World No. 33 Florian Mayer was drawn against, and defeated by, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the first round of the 2013 Wimbledon Championships , in what was also a rematch of

3339-470: The tournament. In a single-elimination tournament without any seeding, awarding the second place to the loser of the final is unjustified: any of the competitors knocked out before getting to play the losing finalist might have been stronger than the actual losing finalist. In general, it is only fair to use a single-elimination tournament to determine first place. To fairly determine lower places requires some form of round-robin in which each player/team gets

3402-438: The two conferences the league has) to face the winner of the first-round series between the fourth and fifth seeds in the next round, even if one or more of the top three seeds had been upset in their first-round series; critics have claimed that this gives a team fighting for the fifth and sixth seeding positions near the end of the regular season an incentive to tank (deliberately lose) games, so as to finish sixth and thus avoid

3465-1323: The two winners of which then meet in the final or championship round . The round before the quarterfinals has multiple designations. Often it is called the round of sixteen , last sixteen , or (in South Asia) pre-quarterfinals . In many other languages the term for these eight matches translates to eighth-final (e.g., in these European languages: "huitième de finale" in French , "achtste finale" in Dutch, octavos de final in Spanish , Achtelfinale in German , åttondelsfinal in Swedish , ottavi di finale in Italian , oitavos-de-final in Portuguese , optimi de finală in Romanian , osmifinále in Czech , osemfinále in Slovak , and osmina finala in Serbo-Croatian ), though this term

3528-505: The victory. Post-match, Tony Schiavone stood on the stage to introduce a special guest. Jay Lethal made his unannounced AEW debut, officially joining AEW. Lethal then challenged Sammy Guevara to a match for the AEW TNT Championship on the following episode of Dynamite , which Guevara accepted. In the main event, Kenny Omega (accompanied by Don Callis ) defended the AEW World Championship against "Hangman" Adam Page. Throughout

3591-655: The week of Veterans Day . It is one of AEW's "Big Four" PPVs, which includes Double or Nothing , All Out , and Revolution , their four biggest domestic shows produced quarterly. Out of the four, Full Gear is AEW's only pay-per-view to be traditionally held on a Saturday. The 2021 Full Gear was originally scheduled to be held on November 6, 2021, at the Chaifetz Arena in St. Louis, Missouri , which would have been AEW's first PPV held in Missouri . However, during All Out on September 5, it

3654-415: The winner receiving a future AEW World Championship match. On the October 16 episode of Dynamite , Bryan Danielson , Orange Cassidy , Preston "10" Vance , Lance Archer , Jon Moxley , Eddie Kingston , Dustin Rhodes , and Powerhouse Hobbs were revealed as the participants. However, on November 2, Moxley was removed from the tournament after he entered a rehabilitation program for alcohol addiction, and

3717-488: The winner receiving a future match for the AEW World Championship. During the match, Miro performed a Samoan Drop on Danielson for a nearfall. The latter landed a shotgun missile dropkick off the top rope. Miro tossed Bryan with a release German Suplex after both men got to their feet. As Danielson went for a Busaiku Knee, Miro countered with a Powerbomb . Miro then applied the Game Over submission, but Danielson crawled to

3780-413: Was Baker-Conti, which was allocated 3 1 ⁄ 2 stars. Brandon Thurston of Wrestlenomics approximated that Full Gear had received 145,000 pay-per-view buys and had sold 10,442 tickets, generating an estimated $ 4 million of revenue in total. Pre-show A pre-game , pregame , or pre-match show is a television or radio presentation that occurs immediately before the live broadcast of

3843-871: Was announced that the third Full Gear event would instead take place on November 13, but with no reference to a location. It was reported that the event was pushed back a week to avoid competition with UFC 268 and the Canelo Álvarez vs. Caleb Plant boxing match . On September 27, it was announced that the event had been relocated to the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota , marking AEW's first PPV to be held in Minnesota . Full Gear featured professional wrestling matches that involved different wrestlers from pre-existing feuds and storylines . Storylines were produced on AEW's weekly television programs, Dynamite and Rampage ,

3906-427: Was replaced by Miro . After losing to Bryan Danielson on the October 29 episode of Rampage , an enraged Eddie Kingston confronted CM Punk while he was being interviewed backstage. On the following episode of Rampage , Kingston stated that although Punk had used to be a "hero" of his, he accused him of becoming "two-faced" and "narcissistic", with Punk responding that Kingston was a "bum".
